What are some of your favorite books about Africa including history and adventure? Looking to branch out of my perspective and see what you all like to read!

Ndlovu, Some Lions I have Known, and Chui! There are many books by the old timey hunters. Then there are books by Ruark, Capstick, and Hemingway.

Oh, my, I forgot to mention Into the Thorns. Harder to find -- don't pay $300 for it, though!

Any ideas on where to find a copy for cheaper?

They come around for less. I cannot predict where the next one will appear. I paid much less for my copy.

Thank you sir, I'll keep my eyes peeled for a copy

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I've read almost every capstick book there is, some of Roark and Hemingway and now I'm trying to branch out so I will look for your suggestions!

That should be, Some Lions I have Met, by Gordon Cundill

Thanks for sharing - I am building my library too. Would love to see more pics from AH members as well. I am a fan of Boddington and love the Tony Sanchez-Arizona series on hunting Africa, country by country.

Thanks for starting the thread - I am a collector as well. Looking for 1st edition of Boddington from Mt. Kenya to the Cape. By the way Where the Lions Roar by Boddington on audio is pretty awesome as well.

Capstick was my introduction to reading about Africa. I've bought most of his books twice after loaning them to friends and not getting them back. One I haven't seen mentioned yet is, Elephant Hunting in East Equatorial Africa by Arthur Henry Neumann. It was published in the late 1890's, has some very interesting observations of that period.

Wow! This is exactly what I was looking for! It's funny, I actually didn't like to read until I picked up Capstick books, now I keep searching more and more! Thank you very much for the resources and I will keep you in mind if I have any questions!

Safari Press published an excellent book in 2016 by Thomas McIntyre, Augusts in Africa. I read three of the stories and that and set it aside, because I really liked the writing style. This is a book I am savoring. YMMV. Under $30 in hardback.

Second the suggestion on Wilbur Smith, great writer, avoid the Egyptian stuff. Start with When the lion feeds.

I agree with the Wilbur Smith books. 'The Burning Shore' was a big influence in my love for Namibia.
The Courtney books are good but I also enjoyed 'River God' and 'The Seventh Scroll' which are meant to be read in that order. The second book has some hunting running through it too.
After that I believe Wilbur should've stopped with the Egyptian books as they are more fantasy than anything and hold little interest.
Capstick, Boddington and Flack all have some good books out there and I particularly like the writing style of Capstick.
You can't go wrong with a copy of 'The Perfect Shot' in your book collection too.

JMO, but White Hunter puts most every other book (until 1970s) into a period timeline which helped me while reading many others.
