No-end-in-sight-for-Zim-cash-shortage-800x400.jpg

Tourists are encouraged to carry cash in small denominations to avoid being given change in bond notes.

Zimbabwe is still experiencing cash shortages, with banks setting limits on withdrawals.

Barclays has set a maximum weekly withdrawal for companies of US$300, of which $100 is in cash and $200 is issued in bond notes. Stanbic has set a daily limit of $250, of which $150 is cash and $100 is issued in bond notes.

If companies require larger amounts, Thomas Dhliwayo, Operations Manager at Jenman Zimbabwe Safaris, suggests speaking to the bank manager and making an application stating the reasons why there is a need for a larger amount to be withdrawn. The application has to be approved by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.

In Victoria Falls only Barclays and Standard Chartered banks still accept foreign cards. Card swiping facilities are still available at many of the supermarkets, restaurants and other retail outlets. Guests can also make use of internet banking, PayPal, and PayNow for pre-booked accommodation and activities. Tourists are encouraged to bring in cash in case foreign credit cards are not accepted. However, they should make sure to carry smaller denominations to avoid being given change in bond notes, which are not accepted outside Zimbabwe, says Dhliwayo.

Those traveling to Zimbabwe also need to be aware that you need to declare your currency on arrival in Zimbabwe. This was from SOAZ (Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe) to it's members a few months ago:

“please advise your clients that at their port of entry they must declare any currency they bring into Zimbabwe on Form 47 (blue in colour). They must retain a copy to enable them to leave the country with the balance of their unexpended funds. This only applies to amounts in excess of $1,000”

$7! You could have had a dove or sandgrouse on quota with that kind of cash! What were you thinking?

We do have an agreement Charlie. She doesn't ask what I spend on hunting and I don't ask what she spends on clothes and shoes!

Honestly, I think you would be able to spend more on hunting if she did tell you how much she spends on clothes and shoes

I came in with a new gun one time. She asked me if I really needed more guns. I asked her is she really needed more shoes.

She has never said another word about a gun purchase.
