After a long hiatus I'm back on the site and up for sale is a ruger no.1 in 9.3x74r. It is in excellent shape, mostly a safe queen. It is topped with a Leupold vx-r 2-7x32 scope with the illuminated reticle sitting in Alaska arms quick detatch rings. It also comes with ammo and brass. One full box of Norma 286gr oryx, one full box of Norma 232gr oryx (these shoot exceedingly well in this rifle). One box of Norma 286gr (10 pieces of brass, 10 unfired rounds) and one box of federal premium safari 286gr Barnes tsx (10 brass and 10 unfired rounds). This gun shoots extremely well, sub moa with the 232gr loads in my experience and right at or a shade under 1 moa with the 286gr. loads see picture of the honest 100 yard target I shot last fall from a Caldwell lead sled. I love the rifle but am working on making room for a 505 Gibbs. Asking $1,500 shipped for the whole package (U.S. Only).

Thanks,
Voodoo

Voodoo this is very tempting! So is the 9.3 x 74 similar to the 375? I am not familiar with the round so please excuse my ignorance!

@CAustin the 9.3x74R is a classic double rifle round. It shoots a 286 grain bullet. The Germans brought them to Africa and they became popular in their territories. Mail order factory ammo is available although it is as pricey as other double rifle ammo. I think for Norma and Hornady I was paying $125 a box or so, basically what you'd pay for middle magnum cartridges.

It's a nice switch hitting cartridge that will do all the plains game in africa, plus leopard, plus giraffe and eland, plus everything in North America including bison and grizzly. Highly recommended. Please check carefully as to whether you can use it for big-5 because it is on the cusp and each nation has different rules on whether this cartridge is an exception to the 375HH minimum or not.

I've owned them and will own them again. This is a great gun being offered that is extremely accurate it appears. I'd get out your wallet.

can you hunt buffalo in South Africa with this gun? Father's Day is coming up and you never know.

The internet says:

Minimum caliber for African game in South Africa
Minimum caliber for dangerous game: Big 5 and hippo Most South African provinces require a minimum caliber of 375 when hunting dangerous game.
Minimum energy requirements None of the South African provinces require minimum energy

Minimum caliber for African game in Zimbabwe
The minimum caliber rifle for African game hunting in Zimbabwe
Class game Game animals Caliber Energy Ft-lbs
A Elephant, Cape buffalo, hippo 9.3mm @ 4 300 Joules of energy / 3 906 ft-lbs

It appears you'd be illegal in RSA but you'd be legal in Zimbabwe for hunting buffalo.

It is a great gun, it really likes the 232 grain bullets plus it gives it a flatter trajectory. Recoil is very mild, more of a shove than a snap. Ah that is unfortunate spike.t! It is a great caliber!

charlie,no animal will live or die on the difference.i have an double and encore handgun in this cal.

Ammo is pretty reasonable here in the states, anywhere from $35 for cheap Privi partisan up to $86 for premium stuff.

federal is doing the 286 gr woodliegh hidro solid for 120.00 per 20.kill t.rex with no prob and on thin skin it will out perform soft points.

I am on my second one, great rifle in a great cartridge. With that scope that is a good buy.

It is the sister to 9.3x62
5-10% less energy in the same 300gr bullet class than the .375
In reality it plays no roll.
I would' t ask for these senseless regulations
I talked with every PH in Africa I met about this theme.
Everyone would accept it.

charlie you NEED this rifle for your no1 collection :A Thumbs Up: as i said i would have it but for the bit of water in the way. great cal you will use lots i promise :)

Thanks for the kind words and good info everyone has provided!

Can’t say anything from experience about the rifle, but the caliber is something I’ve shoot a lot. Let’s put it this way, even after a driven hunt without any game coming by you. It’s one sexy bullet to unload. Love the 9,3x74r and hope to bring it to Africa one day soon.

CAustin I have shot everything from Diker to cape eland with a 9.3x74. In a Ruger #1 where you don't have to worry about regulation you could very easily get a 300gr Aframe handloaded very close to the 375. But why. The 300 gr at 2350 in my double has just been easy on the shoulder and history has proven for over a 100 years that it will deal with most anything that walks on this planet.
