Good day to all members. As promised I am uploading and do a write-up about the 2016 Expedition 1880 Era Black powder hut at Weltevreden farm. The hunt took place from the 1st of May to the 8th of May 2016. Here are all the members who took part in the hunt. My son Ruan did not pose for the photo since he did not have 1880 era clothing, but will do so in 2017. The complete write-up will follow.

I'll bet this was a load of fun from start to finish!

The hunt took place from the 1st of May to the 8th of May 2017.

Back to the Future(y)

I am currently enjoying reading and studying the settling of the American West. I will enjoy seeing how it was done in your part of the world.:)

Enjoyed last years thread. Looking forward to this one. (y)

Always knew you guys were ahead of us. Thought it was 8 hours. Didn't realize it was 8 months.:D

Great photos! This looks like great fun ~ eagerly awaiting your report!

More photos of members who participated in this hunt. We had visitors as well.
We had a real British hunter in the camp as well, David (Livingstone I presume?) It was the first real, original Englishman I have seen since the Anglo Boer war....I expected some fireworks between our wild Boer , Johan Greyling and the real Englishman, David from London.

The list of hunters who participates continuous. We were fortunate to have in our midst, a real British subject , a real original Englishman, David from London. For the first time in South African history we have a Boer and Englishman that hunt together and talked to each other..http://www.**NOT**PERMITTED**.co.za/forums/images/smilies/thumb_up.gif

I am glad he did not participate in the Anglo Boer war, since he is a dead shot, he knows how to shoot and handle a rifle, he shot the first pig on our hunt...

Our visitors consist of Andrew Leigh, Pietie Barnard( Willie Barnard`s son , Jaap Steenkamp and visitor hunter is Greg

The rest of the story will follow, we are experiencing difficulties with internet signals..

You guys are way too clean for 1880! But looks like great fun!

Great report. A fine looking group of hunters with a marvelous wagon, and correct weapons....Bill

Outstanding! I think you have the beginnings of a pretty dangerous looking Commando.

This story of our 1880 era black powder hunt at Weltevreden cattle farm started when we upload the Kakebeen ox wagon at Herman Nel`s farm. I need to express my appreciation for Johan Greyling who are willing to tow the ox wagon to the farm.

We arrived at Weltevreden farm:

As tradition requires, Herman made the first camp fire by using his Tonteldoos only, with a piece of flint rock , horse manure , dry grass and his bellows..

We all got around the camp fire and start discussing possibilities...we then was treated with excellent violin music by Willie Barnard and Boere konsertina music by Morgan

Where did everyone sleep?
Ruan and me slept in the 1880 era prospectors tent my wife and I build.

Willie Barnard and Greg slept here:

Keep in mind , every night two leopards circled the camp and a hyena visited as well.
Morgan slept in the veld as well, not being afraid of anything as well..
Herman Nel slept in his Kakebeen ox wagon:

I see no oxen this year either :E No:

Now seriously, are oxen still used somewhere in RSA ?

leopard circling the camp... pretty bold to just be out sleeping on the ground! Did you have someone pulling guard or dogs in the camp to keep the wildlife at bay?

We will make use of oxen next year.Morgan had a dog for the first two nights, when he left there was enough silence to hear the leopard`s rasping sound around the camp. The hyena did his rounds as well. The following days the leopard tracked Johan Greyling and Ruan while they were hunting. The leopard also kept Hansie Minnaar company at the dam where Hansie was ambushing Impala and some baboons. MC found big leopard prints walking on some of the hunters footprints..I think it was starting to get annoyed with us , since he was calling for a female...we will be attending an ox wagon trek later in the year in the same region, there will be at least five ox wagons with oxen to pull the wagons, I will upload photos of that event as well since we will be riding our horses on this trip as well..(y)
