Ruger precision rifle

Well I am looking at upgrading from my rem 700 in 30-06 to a 308. Then I see all the reviews of the ruger precision. Street price right at 1k is exactly where my price range is and the kid in me just thinks the guns just cool looking.

My local shop said they are looking at maybe first of year... I'm a very impatient person when comes to buying new toys.

Anyone had to chance to shoot one?
Even bigger question, anyone have a place I can find one in 308 that isn't $1400?

Not trying to be argumentative ... but how is a .308 an upgrade over a 30-06?

I'm new to shooting any distance really. Everything I've read has both sides of the 30-06 vs 308 argument. The winning factor was that people shooting and winning competitions were doing so with the 308...

Also I don't reload but plan start in nearer future. Not directly related but something

Hi in my opinion .308 is a better gun for competition shooting les recoil and a little cheaper to reload accuracy is more in the shooter than the rifle

But for a hunting gun the 06 is better in my books just packs that little extra punch

I still have my 30-06. I'm just looking to pick up the ruger precision as a potential replacement and something I could use to take some classes and become a better shooter. I've never shot over 200yds really. I love range time and just yesterday shot 150 rnds of 22mag out too 150yds. It's something I enjoy like I imagine many of you do. I have been looking at buying a 223 savage to potentially get out farther and still for cheap.

Then the ruger pops up and I could get an awesome range gun, a good starting point to become a better shooter, and something I could hunt with just about anywhere.

I truly value the input of more experienced shooters which is why I came here. Also was hopeful someone could either say the new ruger is junk or say it is what it looks like and where I could find it.

Upgrade to a 300 Win Mag. Reloading I can get 30-06 recoil with a much flatter shooting round.

Suggested platform? Big thing for me is gun/ammo costs. If too pricey I can't afford to practice with it. Havnt researched 300 win at all

Just sold a used Ruger Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor for around $980 from the shop I do marketing for. I think we are going to be getting a few more in. They shouldn't run more than about $1,100-1,200 honestly.

They are insanely accurate guns throw a scope on one and it's ready to rock. The only issue with them is their weight, it is a very heavy rifle. Unless you are going to camp in a blind or on a feed lot, they are not practical in any sense to carry for longer trips. I wouldn't even bother hauling one into a tree-stand and trying to hold it to shoot. For just killing targets at long range on a lazy day, it can't be beat for the price.

I just bought a stainless TC Venture in .300 WM and threw a 3-9x40 Nikon Prostaff on it. Whole thing ran me just a little under $700. I watched Jim Shockey and Corey Knowlton drop all sorts of game at distance with this gun on the first season of Uncharted. If I have time I will post some targets when I get back from the range tomorrow.

How's the kick on that TC SW? Never shot a 300. Also, are they too much for SC whitetail? Also planning to do some ram hunting in texas and a black beat hunt in Canada... I know my 30-06 can do both no problem but want a gun both capable and not overkill if takes place of my 06 on the hunt.

Any knowledge too why they sold the precision already? Also the weight is definately a factor. I would be carrying this gun hunting. Hmm

The .300 WM is definitely overkill for deer, I just wanted one rifle for all of North America. Kick is somewhat objective. I'm a bigger guy and not very recoil sensitive, but a .300 WM is going to kick like a mule without a muzzle break. The issue with putting a muzzle break on however, is you better hope you have ears on when you fire it. Overall though the gun is very light weight and durable, but not something I want to shoot a lot past zeroing it in.

The person who sold the Precision Rifle to us didn't do it because he didn't like how the gun shot, he simply didn't like the weight. I mean you could change the handguard to save some weight, but that's more money you have to spend.

You might want to look at Browning A-bolts or even the tried and true Remington 700 if you want a decent quality .308 or .30-06 that won't break the bank. It all depends on what you want to shoot as far as game. If you're only hunting deer I wouldn't get anything bigger than a .308 or a .30-06 if you like your shoulder. A .300 WM is just fine for bears and sheep; I would argue it's probably the perfect round for sheep considering the distance and need for a flatter round to hit sheep at some of the steep angles you may be forced to shoot at.

Overkill maybe but as one of the guys that turned me on to that caliber pointed out "we ain't taking prisoners". I whitetail hunt in North Carolina and haven't had a deer complain yet

Mine is in a 700 which I love. If I were to have to choose a runner up I would go with the Ruger Hawkeye 77. I have a ruger 375 on that platform that is a slick hog gun that hopefully I'll be carting to Africa in a few years.

@dailordasailor If you want low recoil, long range, accuracy, and something that carries more velocity and more energy to 500 yrds than a 308... Take a serious look at the 6.4 Creedmoor... Amazing ballistics for the size and kick.

If you want a gun you can use for hunting as well as bench work.. Why not consider a Varmint/target model of the Hawkeye? Still to heavy to hunt with IMO.

On the other hand, you are obviously impressed with the new Precision Rifle so go for it if that is what you want! But look into the 6.5 Creedmoor before you make a final decision.

On the other hand all you guys posting on here just need to pop over to the over .375 big bore threads, then go out and shoot a few rounds in a .416, 458 Lott, or 505 Gibbs. Then take a 300 Win Mag in hand and it will seem mild

Well Bob is right after shooting the big bores a 300 Win Mag is a baby, but still the 300 Win Mag is a great caliber. Ammo use to be cheap for the .308, but Obama came along and I swear it doubled in price and I don't see it becoming cheap. The 300 Win Mag is not overkill, it's a great caliber to learn to shoot if you are going to hunt deer to eland.

The precision rifle looks like a really sweet rifle to shoot. Just not my style of gun to go hunting with. As ActionBob said though if thats what you want go with it! I only regret buying one gun and it was because i felt pressured into getting it. That wont happen again!

If you are just looking for a new caliber though 300 WM is hard to beat. Trust me dont let the recoil factor get in the way if you habe been shooting a 30-06. I am not a very big guy and it doesn't bother me. It took some practice and a thick jacket to step up to the 375 though!

The Ruger Precision is pretty clever marketing idea. Creates a "platform" type rifle without the costs of an AR upper and lower.

Both are fairly silly except for shooting at a range. I have a .308 built on the Mega action with Trijicon scope and am into it for well over 3k. With a 10 rd mag it is the heaviest rifle that I own. It is very accurate, but has no practical application - more in common with a crew-served weapon than any battle rifle that I ever used - much less a sporter. But one can hang all sorts of gizmos off of it which I am sure is the charm to the current generation. Even for repelling boarders, the thing has more in common with a BAR. Might have been useful in stopping hordes of charging Dervishes at Omdurman but I would have hated to have marched to the battlefield with it.

The Ruger seems to be blessed with all those same "virtues" but at least the itch can be scratched for a lot smaller investment.
