I remembered a thread here talking about if anyone had ever hunted all the species possible on the African continent. That got me thinking and I came up with a question. Does anyone hold the record for the most animal species hunted in their lifetime? And who is this legendary hunter?

I would have to guess that Teddy Roosevelt would be high on that list..... I heard that he took a crazy amount of animals, specifically in Africa, in his lifetime. His expedition for the Smithsonian included like 11,000.... of which over 1500 was large/big game. They had to have several tons of salt shipped over for the "hunt".

This will be the most interesting fact id ever heard if you get the answer of who it is and how many species

I wouldn't be surprised if he came out as #1 if someone were to tally all the results.

If we are talking about different species, then just take the list of winners of the Weatherby Award.

To be considered a candidate, you must have hunted in all continents, and taken no less than 250/270 different species.

You may check the list here

By the way, the 2014 winner is a lady, Renee Snider.

I keep a record of all the large game I have hunted with a rifle, including; species, sex, year shot. I'm no where near those numbers though!

You took the words out of my mouth Nyati.

I hunted with a 30 year old last fall that was in the 120-150 species range. (Can't remember exactly) I will never get close to that number. He had 10 or so foreign hunts already booked for 2015 at the time.

All it takes is time, money and desire.:)

Wonder how much money it would take these days to get to 250+ species?

Now that is an even more interesting question!

I'm going to guess somewhere between $2-3k per species once you include travel etc.... More if you include the H&H Royal double rifles and assorted Rigby's!

There was a thread here a year or so ago about the most expensive animals to hunt. If you take ten or so of those animals you can probably get to $400,000 pretty fast.

It would be interesting to get input from James Jeffrey or another agent. I don't know how to tag him. Can you? Or can you tell me how?

@Wheels , just put "@" and then start to type their name and it will pop up to tag.

And I'm already wondering if my $2-3k per animal is on the low side!

There are a lot of free and very cheap ones in there too.

James,

How much do you think it would cost for a hunter to take 250+ species in this day and age? I know there is a lot of variables but do you have an educated guess?

Thanks!

I thought about that, but a person would still have to travel to them and in most case you still have expensive travel and day fees etc.... One animal for $40k and 19 animals that are totally free is still $2k per animal...

Half a million would be a good start. By the time you add airfare and taxidermy, it begins to add up to real money. I would just settle for the ammo needed.....

I've been to Irvin Barnharts trophy room. He has to be in the top 10 at least. Amazing place.

How many different species someone has hunted is not nearly as interesting to me as those who have taken large numbers of dangerous game. The first is largely a function of two major resources - time and money. The latter is a fast vanishing fraternity. I would love, for instance, to spend an evening with Tony Sanchez-Arino. Not so much the latest Weatherby Award winner.

I second you on that one Redleg...I had hoped to meet Harry Selby in june....was with a guy who know him pretty well but we simply did not have the time to do it..

Sadly Harry is in a weelchair now..

I also would want to meet Tony, he has had an amazing life in Africa..

I so envy you meeting Selby. He is one of the last of that last generation.

I agree with you Red Leg, I have met two of those +270 species hunters, very wealthy individuals, but they cannot compare with Tony, he is quite a character, willing to share is experience, and one of the few real gentlemen still around today.
