Welcome to AH. Your 7mm as you have been told is fine for everything but big 5 animals. 7mm is not much different from my 300 win mag and I've taken nine animals with it and my son took five. Ask lots of questions!

Are you booked with an outfitter yet or have you spoken with one yet? If so what did they say about which gun to use? Hire a broker to get you through customs with your firearms. Look up @safari gal who runs Travel Express here on AH to help with flights. She specializes in hunters flying with guns. You will not see your trophies for a while after your hunt, D&P or full mounts. Get your trophy list inline for what you think you might like to hunt then book. Budget a few ''Holy $hit that is huge!" costs into your trophy list. In other words budget for a few unplanned animals. Go hunt and post pics with a story line here on AH afterwords. Good-day to all,

Plains game rifle will be my 7mm rem mag 26 inch barrel with Zeisss scope 3-15x50mm z800 reticle. Based on emails with many different sources it is a .284 with a necked down 375 h&h case and will be very effective. The majority did recommend 175 grain bullets however, and absolutely no less than 160 grain as a minimum.

I just purchased and picked up a Leupold vx6 1-6x24mm scope and Leupold quick release rings at my local firearms shop, very happy the moa adjustment is excellent.

Dangerous game rifle shopping today:
I can get a .416 Rigby from the Montana rifle co, a 375 h&h or 416 rigby CZ 550 lux European hog back style stock (or north american kevlar stock option), as well as a 375 H&H zastava m70 (98) hog back style eruopean wooden stock, or a 375 h&h winchester model 70 alaskan american sport stock or a sako 85 Bavarian 375 h&h. Any thoughts here or other suggestions, I plan to purchase/order the rifle within the next 2-3 weeks. I would really like to know what local guides and ph support in african countries use most frequently. I value local insight in terms of reliability and safety, as I often work with Inuit and other aboriginal hunter groups here in Canada and always prefer to follow local customs when possible. I can also get a used 450 rigby CZ in excelent like new conditon (used for one safari trip only). Ammo for that has only one source here and has to be ordered in with a minimum 3 week wait time . I can get it for 195.00 per box 10 rounds per box if I buy 4 boxes. Apparently the 450 rigby is just 416 rigby necked out to accept a 458 Lott bullet from what I was told. I really have no knowledge on that as fact or fiction but figured I would pass it along comment.

Local supplier has .416 Rigby Barnes vor-tex copper and Hornady dgs & dgx 400 grain. As well as 260 grain nosler and 270 grain or 300 grain federal power shok soft point .375 H&H and remington 270 grain in .375 h&h

Gun shop tried to sell me a Steiner 2-10x42mm for a 375 h&h. Said it would match the ballistics of a 375 h&h with 260 grain better.

416 would be better for 1-6x but work fine at close range on a 375 as well according to supplier. 1-6x with a 30mm tube is reccomended for close quarters style hunting

You have an interesting potential first list of trophies. There have been a few comments on the cats. Lion and leopard are often a hunt of their own with bait animals shot along the way. Expense can vary. If you want to take one or the other with a huntformother animals then you might look at Tanzania with a 21 day license. That hunt gets expensive. Couple that are discounted have been posted and are still over $50,000. If you do the cheeta as a first cat then look at Namibia. A hunt for one,of them was just posted in the last week or so. Might give you amgoodmfeel for what to expect. Last May in RSA I used my 7mm w/ 160 gr accubonds. 8 shots for 6 animals. 3 of those dropped where they stood.
Trophy shipments take a while. Depending on the country and time of year it is usually 2-6 months to have hides and horns shipped. Finished trophies are often about a year or so before they are done.
Your ammo is very expensive. If you are able to reload it may drop the cost significantly. Personally I'd avoid the .450 Rigby. Would be impossible to get ammo for in Africa. When traveling it pays to think of what could be found there if your ammo fails to arrive. The .375 and .416 both are common enough that ammo could be found if necessary.
I believe you asked about hunting in Aug? Generally speaking that is a good time to go. Pelts/hides will be fine. Middle of winter there.

That Tanzania hunt would be the most awsome first safari! Or anytime. But double check the math, it will take much closer to $100, 000 than $50, 000.

Hard to do much better than that VX6 1-6 scope for most Africa hunting and certainly a great choice on a 375 or 416.

A Winchester M70 in 375 or 416 is a great reliable and we mooth working gun right out of the box, I've taken more game with my M70 375 than any other centerfire rifle I have, no issues with stock in fact it fits nicely and looks great. A Kimber Caprivi would be a great choice as well. I would avoid the Zastava and MRC guns unless you can shoot then and thoroughly run them through the paces.

If you plan to hunt elephant and buffalo or hippo on land, get a 416. For everything I think a 375 is superior, and it will do on the above critters as well.

I took a 7Mag, my son took a 270. All one shot kills, except for a Blesbok the I hit too far back, totally my fault.
11 shots, 10 animals from Duiker to zebra.

My advice:
1: Ask your PH, then take his, or her advice.
2: As already stated, 375 is minimum for DG in the countries of which I am familiar.
3: Ask your PH and take their advice.
4: Enjoy your time, it's addictive, you'll be planning your return BEFORE you actually leave.
5: See #1 and #3 above.!!!

Especially number 4!
