New Double .577NE | 600NE | 700NE

There is also alot of pie in the sky. I have a very good friend that has hunted quite a few elephant with me. Started out with 416 then 470 then 500 and now has a 577 and 600. He uses his 600 and he shoots it extremely well! Its a side lock Perugini & Visini it handles like a dream and fits him perfectly. Side brained an elephant and as it was coming down gave it the second barrel! So much for "recovery time". The next elephant was almost quartering on at about 80 yards, last afternoon and couldn't get any closer. He was about to hesitate and said just drill it. He did just that!At the shot I thought he'd missed because the elephant seem didn't react instead sort of shuddered to the shot.. What left like a long time was probably only a moment but the jumbo started to turn slowly and gave him another one. Elephant went 50 yards.. He's first shot hit it just inside the point of the shoulder into the heart.

Another friend of mine with a merkel 500. George's thoughts "Its too far Leon". Before he can murmur - Leon "George just aim where you want to hit and squeeze the trigger!" Bang kudu 130 yards no problem. My point is alot of BS and misconceptions out there!! and course very sage advice;-) Sometimes hard to navigate through it all.

Depends on what you want in a DG DR?
Here they are.
Reliability,,
How the rifle balances, fits and feels?
How is shoots or you shoot it... ?
Can one afford the damn thing!
Probably should add looks in here somewhere;-)

Enjoy the journey in finding the right one. Its a long and satisfying road.
I've settled on a 375, 416, 500J, 460 Weatherby and 577NE! LOL

More than welcome! I must say I had my world rocked the other day when I touched off a round after two year absence from the game... wow is all i can say. But I got a handle on it and left it at that!
Don't remember it being quite so spicy!!! But it puts the smack down in china town!

I am testing the Verney 500NE today as well...

Any thoughts on the make, Merkel?

I am a proud owner of a brand new Verney Carron 500NE :) :) :)

yup sounds reasonable with the odd lechwe, defassa waterbuck , puku etc .....good test for a .500 double to check its working properly, and getting some practice before going after the big stuff ;)

o_Oo_O
;):) I have read through all the posts by now and keep on stopping at the lovely picture of Elizabeth Hurley....

Seriously though, I have thought and looked at it from every angle and have come to a very simple conclusion.... They are just not practical.
Cost of ammunition, weight vs carry, price of fire arm (forget about Ivan Carter... Do we honestly believe he bought it with $25k of his hard earned money? It's a sponsor)

No matter which way I cut it it will take allot for me to be convinced that carrying the 600 or 700 is a prudent choice for myself while elephant hunting... I just don't buy it.

There is a reason why 70% - 80% of operational PH's don't carry them.....

I would probably love to have one...... but to be honest, I'll stick to my trusty 3, 470, 500 and 460 weatherby.

My best always
Jaco, doesn't the .460 Weatherby produce more energy than that of the .577 NE? I haven't fired either, but looking at energy, the .577 NE produces 7000 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle where the .460 Weatherby produces 8000 ft. lbs. according to what I have been able to look up. I know that a double is preferred, but sounds to me like you have a pretty big boomer to stop what ever you like! Just looking for education from those who use them.

:E Shake Head: @TMS simon thats ASTON Martin............thanks for the vote of confidence in presuming it wasnt miss hurley :E Big Grin: it looked good for a while .....but yeah you are correct :D Beers: it drove great and sounded fantastic with the roof down and sports exhaust blaring :A Thumbs Up: was a few years ago now though.........more into my d/c cruiser these days :E Big Grin:
How did I miss a discussion on Aston Martins?!? Tell me more about it. Nothing quite like British cars...

VC's round body doubles are a delight to hold congrats....
what length are the barrels

I've never been to Africa, and the two biggest guns I own is a 375 H&H and a 458 Winchester Magnum, but I was wondering are there any professional hunters out there that back their clients with a 375 H&H?
