.375 H&H Do Critics Exist?

Well, that settles it. Since, even when I asked for critiques, I only got praise, I'm gonna have to pick one up! I'm going to get the CZ 550 Safari in .375 H&H. I've had my eye on it already.

I've not shot a rifle in any caliber with that European "hog leg" type stock. I have heard it said and read that most people prefer the American straight style stock particularly in the bigger bores. You might want to seek more opinions before you buy that particular CZ.

They offer another with a straight stock. I've never looked into it, but I haven't heard anything bad about the European stock. I'll do some more research.

That would be my choice. Think about how both of those will sit against your shoulder. I may be wrong but I'd anticipate the recoil of the Euro style to be concentrated in a smaller spot and more muzzle jump.

There is a better caliber than the .375 h&h for pretty much every application I can think of. If I could only have one rifle though that would be it. I stopped a buffalo, brain shot a hippo, dropped a grysbok, and even took a klippie with a Texas heart shot and almost no damage to the chest (solids aren't just for DG ya know!)

You just can't beat it for versatility and from the biggest to the smallest.

Attaboy! Posting on layover!

:E Grouch:Sitting in the Midland Airport drinking beer and waiting on my flight back to Houston, as soon as I get home I'm going to hug my 375 H&H

2am here, need to be up at 4 am and can't sleep. But it is Ok, because I'm in AFRICA. :)

And by the time I get there, you will be running on all cylinders and laughing at me because I will be all jet-lagged! :)

@Pondoro , I would have no problem taking heart/lung shot with 375. If I am hunting elephant myself, I use my 375, but when I am guiding, I carry my 458wm. The main reason I carry the 458, only weighs 7 lbs where 375 weighs 14 lbs, if I got to shoot an elephant, we go in quick and it's a certain elephant that is causing problems, usually done in a morning, but when guiding, can take days and many kilo's, the weight does count.

Wow It must hurt when you shoot a 7 LB 458 My 375 weighs about 8 fully loaded

James, it is a donkey, but the only time I feel it is on the range, I will take the kick over carry that extra weight for days.

Do not opt for the Hogsback stock!!! Too much drop at the heal sends the rifle recoiling straight up instead of straight back!! That also tends to slam the stock comb into your face from the bench. The straight stocks are way better.

No doubt the .375 will kill an elephant, but what if you get attacked at close range..?

Will it be sufficent to stop him..?

from the little ive done with my 375HH
and everyone that has used it has no issue with it what so ever
one bloke called it a tucker f!@#$r, then he used it one week end hound hunting , then went and ordered the same firearm as mine on the Monday
what can someone be critical about , once the've used this magic wand?

I think I'd look hard at the Wincester model 70 Safari Express over the CZ. Price point is the same and I really liked the looks of the build quality on the new SC built model 70s I saw at SCI. Has a more classic appearance in my opinion only.

You're right, the Winchester does look more classic than the CZ. The only problem is I can't find it in stock anywhere! I looked at some online distributors, called my local shops, and nothing. But, I might wait it out until I can find one. It does look nice.

One can have a round in the chamber and still have 3 in the magazine. Either closing the bolt over the brass or a little trick of pushing the 4th round into the mag until the plate bottoms out and then closing the bolt.

Would it be nice to have 5 down? Sure, but then it'd be nice to have 10 down to. Not sure when enough is enough, but if I've not got it done with 4 shots.....
