I found 1 mention in passing of a concern about using the new travel regs for guns as a
back door scheme to retain gun ownership information somewhere inside the dark halls of
government.
As I haven't done it yet, is there any notation of which and what rifles we are taking with us?
Is there any concern of where this information goes and is retained by whom? Or who has access to it?
With the 4457 at least the Customs boys made no record of what we owned.

I think it most simple to answer your questions with a single "Yes". With regards to your last sentence, I'm not so sure about that Cliff. Upon my return from RSA in 2013 when clearing customs, the CBP officer had me show him my rifles and 4457's. He seemed okay with everything but asked me to wait a few moments and off to his computer he went just clacking away for awhile. When he came back he said to me, "You've not taken these rifles out of the country before have you?" Phrased and spoken like a question he already knew the answer to.

Now just how would he have known that? I was too tired and just ready to get out of the airport to think about it much. Only later did it dawn on me that I believe that in 2010, my first trip to RSA, they made an entry under my passport number with the rifles I took then and it stayed on my "record." So when I came back in 2013 and he's clacking away at his computer that information popped up and I think he was trying to match the 3 rifles I took on that trip with the one rifle I took with me in 2010. The one from 2010 I don't own anymore, so he wasn't going to see that.

As I said under the haze of jet lag it didn't dawn on me until later so I didn't have a chance to respond with any questions. I simply said, yes that's true and I was on my way.

I don't think the primary motivation of this new requirement is to track our guns. There's so many other ways for them to do that now as Philip mentioned.

But one thing that has me slightly concerned is now there is a link at the IRS with an EIN to gun owners and hunters. The IRS has been used before to harass people that are opposed to this administration so it's not exactly being completely paranoid to think this might be used to flag IRS audits.

My concern is not the fact the government knows what we own, they already have the records thru a FFL transfer, but in future legislation limiting how many we can own....the 2nd say we have the right to keep and bear arms, but not mention or restriction on how many, the term arms refers to 2 or more...next step can be the number you own..it is that way in SA now. We probably have more latitude and lax restrictions of firearms ownership in the world, boys I think that will change in the not to distant future if the left wing has any control over it.

That is interesting. When I returned from Canada in 2012 the CBP officer only glanced at my 4457 and asked if the rifle listed was the one that I had behind my trucks seat and I said yes. He never looked at the rife or at the 4457 after that.

As time passes it only gets worse...More people, more problems...We have been pretty much immune to what happened in foreign countries...With influx of all the different nationalities that is changing...Unfortunately some bad comes with the good..

Well it's not like the IRS has been used to target specific groups or anything........oh wait.......:sneaky:

I don't think there is any reason to worry about a so-called back door registration. I have heard that term several times during the last six months or so. In the case of potential gun registration of hunters that go to Africa, there is even a lesser reason to be concerned. Out of all U.S. hunters, the number that hunts overseas during a lifetime is extremely small. When you consider the number of shooters who don't hunt and use the total number of shooters and hunters, the number that hunt overseas is minuscule. Hardly worth the effort, but still a pain in the ass for those that do hunt overseas.

I'm confident that if anyone has ever bought a firearm through a dealer, or ammo with a credit card, you're already in the system and it's registered. Part of the reason I believe they want to close the "gun show loophole'' and private deals. Those firearms they don't know about and can't keep track. Hell, I think even looking on any website related to firearms puts you on some list, somewhere, in some file that supposedly doesn't exist.

Not paranoid, just don't trust them as far as I can throw them.
