Looking for suggestions for brokers or clearing agents for my upcoming hunt to SA. I'm hoping to bring 4 (Kudo, Impala, Eland, Wart Hot) European mounts home. One animal will be mounted (Nyala) if I'm lucky to get one on the ground.

I'm still deciding on having the Nyala tanned in SA or dipped and packed. Either way my taxidermist here in the states will be doing the shoulder mount. From what I've heard it's better to have it dipped and packed because the tanning isn't that good in SA.

I've done limited research and found a small customs broker that is located in Atlanta and someone here has used with good success. Then there are the 2 big ones, Fauna & Flaura and Coppersmith. Are there any problems going with a smaller broker vs one of the larger ones. Sounds like cost is 3x - 4x higher than a smaller one or one that doesn't specialize in taxidermy.

Any suggestions/information would be greatly appreciated.

I have used Fauna and Flora they are not cheap but they get the job done.

Buzz,
I used Coppersmith it did not go so well. I will try Hunter International next time. I have heard nothing but good things about them.

Agreed, they do get the job done. I didn't find their fee expensive but the freight was, and it wasn't going far. I looked at it in total as paying for peace of mind.

I used Hunter International, they did a great job, excellent communication.

I wouldn't mind hearing the details of your negative experience if you don't mind sharing them sir. I'd planned on using Coppersmith, but if there's a better option then I may need to reconsider.
Feel free to PM me.

Thanks,
Jeff

After my first safari, I called Coppersmith. Ever call a business with the intent of possibly giving them some of your money and get the feeling your bothering them by having the nerve to ask a few questions? That was my limited experience with them.

A few minutes later I was on the phone with Maria Felix at Hunter's Int'l, complete opposite experience. I just their service for the 2nd time in July and was again very happy with their service.

D&l brokers out of Chicago are the best at what they do. I have used them many times. Never one problem. I have also used the others mentioned above. The main difference with D&L is I feel like they care about my trophies and don't call and threaten to charge me storage unless I pay within 3 days.
I get a email from Lisa that my crate has cleared. I get a call from the taxidermist that my crate is at the shop. I get a bill in the mail from D&l and have 30 days to pay. I like no drama. I will always use D&L.

I'e used Fauna and Flora for over 15 years. They are right at JFK Airport and can drive to Customs or USFWS if there is a problem. Explain to them exactly what you need them to do (just clear it or clear it and forward to your taxid, etc) and they should give you a pretty good quote.

jeffpg The communication was terrible. My shipment sat there for an extra three days because the agent I was dealing with took a Friday off and did not have anyone take care of his customers. Then they charged me for the extra days in storage. Hagar
