Hi to everyone, I am planning on my first African Safari, plains game, in about 3 years. I have been reading various books and looking at different outfitters. Any helpful suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated.
At the present I am building a rifle in 300 H&H for this hunt. Also, one last question, what does the word jesse mean. Does it mean thick bush?

Welcome to AH, great place to plan a hunt. Nice caliber choice!

Welcome to the best forum on the web!

Great caliber choice for PG though! There is many great outfitters here and sure you will be hooked up anytime soon.

Regards,

Howdy!!!

You've found the perfect place to plan!

Someone else is going to need to confirm on the Jesse Bush, but I've always assumed it was a particular type of thick bush.

Hello Shellback87. Were you in the Navy? Where are you in Missouri? I live just over the Kansas line in Overland Park. I've been on two safaris now both of them with African Sky Hunting Safaris in Pretoria South Africa. Would be more than happy to share info with you. There are a lot if details to planning one of these trips and I would have made some mistakes had I not had a few good people to talk with prior to booking. I've hunted both trips in South Africa, wonderful country, and in three different provences while there. The 300 you are building will be great for all plains game. I have used a Ruger model #1 in 300 win mag for all the plains game I've taken from Kudu to Gemsbok. Let me know if I can help you.
I strongly suggest you browse through this forum over the next several months to pick up on issues that could arise before, during and after your trip. A safari makes for a life time of memories but as some would say "one oh s*#t can mess it all up"
There are lots of outfitters over there and some are fly by night. Same with taxidermists. Air travel can be expensive so planning as far in advance as you are is smart!
Best Regards
Charlie

With a name like Shellback87...must be Navy! Welcome!

We have a lot in common it seems...I have a retirement place in Ozark County Missouri I can't wait to escape to, I was in the Marines but my Navy brothers always like to remind me that the USMC is just a department of the Navy (I tell them it is the Men's Department!), I am going to Africa next year for the first time and I will also be taking a 300 H&H.

You will find lot of opinions on every subject here! Read up and enjoy!

….. Also, one last question, what does the word jesse mean. Does it mean thick bush?

Bush Willow basically and yes it is bloody thick.

Combretum celastroides
Jesse-bush bushwillow (English)
Mugalusaka (Tonga: Zimbabwe)
Trailing bushwillow (English)
Umlalanyathi (Ndebele)
Zambezi jessebush (English)

Welcome to AH.

Good luck with your planning.

Welcome to AH Shellback87! All the best with your research…

Welcome friend from Missouri! I live just south of Kansas City. Please feel free to PM me anytime. I've been over 10 trips now, not as many as some but enough to help avoid disaster! Are you wanting to hunt South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Namibia?

Hello and welcome! You are at the right place to obtain the correct information for an unforgettable hunt!

Welcome to AH, Shellback87 !

Welcome to AH Shellback87! If you have any questions just fire away and the good members here will try to answer them for you. Good luck with the planning.

Welcome to AH.

The thick stuff has many things that want to stick you while you are trying to pick your way through or into it.
At times it is difficult to see 10 feet let alone 10 yards into it.
Tracking is accomplished very slowly while usually following up a wounded cape buffalo.

Currently sitting in Missouri as well for the next little bit, welcome to the site, lots of info here

btw for any of you other Missouri folks, is there a better bbq than Oklahoma Joes? and don't mean to steal the thread *L*

Don't know about Oklahome Joes, but I sure like to eat at Hucklebuck's when I am in Ava, MO.

If you get over to Kansas City area Jack Stack BBQ is outstanding.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
Ross
