Medium bore DG cartridges

after the first mention of 400 H&H on this thread I started to do some reading on the cartridge. I can pretty much see why it hasn't taken off:

1. odd bullet diameter (both the .410" and the .416" are more easily obtained)
2. belted case (already losing popularity with reloaders)
3. performance is "average" (it falls into the same range as the 416 cartridges)

as for the 404 Jeffery cartridge... I want one! im constantly kicking around the idea of having my CZ 550 in 375 H&H converted to 404 Jeff.

425 W.R.?

425 W.R.?

yup that one as well .....the .400h&h, and >465h&h bolt action calibres were created a few years ago by h&h to ........................maybe i havent a clue...paul created the .450 rigby and maybe they felt left out....:sleep:and maybe what happens when being part of a corporate "lifestyle"company http://www.hollandandholland.com/bespokemen.php happens................fk that i like my TAG shirts and stuff :D

matt if you arent including my 9.3s then i am off to have a few more orange grey goose and cokes and will not sully my finger tip posting on this thread again..............but i would be very happy to wander around the shateen with my either of my favourites...............

Huge mistake on CZ's part for not making the .404 Jeffrey on the regular 550 platform. I bought my 375 H&H for less than $750 when it first came out. I love that gun. CZ always seems to looking for ways to sell more guns.

Rogerthat in multiples.

if CZ ever decided to make a standard 550 in 404 Jeffery I will be near the top of the list ordering one!

Me too.
As far as I can tell from the two so called "Custom Shop" rifles I have seen so far (my .500 Jeffery and one belonging to another chap here, in .505 Gibbs), that option is a scam.
I own several regular 500 Magnums plus one standard one (6.5x55) and one .22 but they are fine, as are several others belonging to friends of mine.
They will never sell me another so called "Custom Shop" rifle (none of my friends will fall for it now either) but I would buy more run-of-the-mill 550s, especially if they offered it in .404 Jfry.

Typo / I Meant to say:
I own several regular 550 Magnums, not "500 Magnums" (referring to model of CZ rifle).

Add the 338 Winchester magnum to the list. It is commonly used in Alaska for the largest carnivores-brown bears.

im kicken around the idea of writing an article on medium bore DG cartridges. ive been doing a large amount of research on them and find them to be very interesting. im thinking a brief history, potential uses, reloading tips, and perhaps my own general opinion.

this article isnt going to be published or anything. im really writing it just for fun.

so far the cartridges id like to talk about are:

416 weatherby
416 Rigby
416 Remington Mag
416 Ruger
500/416 NE 3.25"
404 Jeffery
375 H&H
450/400 NE 3"
9.3x74R (may or may not include this one)

any one think i should add any other cartridges? any suggested info i should put in the article?

thanks

Some others. Lots more could be listed.

Some British and European cartridges:
.375 Flanged
.375 Nitro Express
.318 Westley Richards - both in bolt actions and double rifles
.333 Jeffery - rimless and rimmed
.350 Rigby Magnum
.400/.350
9.3x62
9.3x64
9.3x70 and a few other 9.3mms
.358 Norma Magnum
.369 Purdey
8.5x63
A number of different .400's rimmed cartridges in .408 to .411
.425 Westley Richards
.416 Chatfield-Taylor

Some American and others:
.338/06
.338 Win Mag
.340 Weatherby
.375 Weatherby
.378 Weatherby
.375 Ruger
.35 Whelan
Various Dakota cartridges.

.425 PH

as for the 375 weatherby, I need to do a bit of research into weatherby's .375" diameter cartridges. I know of the 375 and the 378 but im not familiar with the history of either. this could make for some fun research. I did get a chance to fire a rifle in 378 weatherby once and talk about a powerful rifle!

There may be better options, but I like the flexibility of the .375 Wby. Out of my Wby DGR with the 24" barrel, it can do all of the following:

I did publish an article in Gun World magazine a few years ago on my .404 Jeff/CZ 550. In my research I found that Ruger DID in fact chamber a few 77's in .404 but due to as mentioned above, problems with chamber size, SAAMI etc., dropped it and of course the few No. 1's that are out there so chambered. I have seen a couple on auction sites going for pretty big, but not outrageous prices. I think the medium bore should really begin with the .375 and end with the .40 calibers, especially since everything bigger is really an African cartridge. That still covers a lot of cartridges, plenty for the scope of an article length piece. Its not that some of the smaller cals aren't effective, they are, but in the bygone era, the .375 would be the normal starting point for the medium bore.
