MY LATEST LONG RANGE RIG..

Any other AH hunters that enjoy long range shooting in the off season..?

You can have a can where you are ?

Nice looking stick you've got yourself and the others in this thread.

I'm into a bit of long range stuff myself.

Here is one of my 308s.

..yup, cans are no problem at all. Nice rig, Dave, is that a McMillan you've got there? 30 MOA on that rail? What ammo are you using..

Its a Rem700 action thats been worked over by R&D Precision she's dropped into a McMillan A5 stock and wears a 22" Bartlein MTU profile barrel and she's toped off with an old USO SN3 3.2-17 with an illuminated Mil Gap ret.

Its a nice rifle as far as rifles go, one of my newest to my safe.

Typically I shoot reloads thru it and most of my guns it seems to favour 175gr OTM.

Oh yeah both these rifles are running 20moa bases.

Here is another 308 pretty much a standard Rem700 LTR with a Jewell trigger Badger DBM and fitted in a MCM A5 stock.

DOC, I know this is an old thread, but, I finally remember the camera for this F*****g range trip, Getting old I guess... The rifle, (obviously) a Remington 700, in 308 using Remington Premier 168gr. match ammo. The group at 500 yards was just under 5 inches, and the group at 600 was center to center 6 inches. Wind was 7 mph 1/4 value from southwest. No adjustments made for wind.

BTW,my son just joined the Army and will be leaving for boot camp in September, anyone guess what class he is taking after AIT? It's not airborne... Very proud...

Scott, I'm very proud of your son.

I'm in the process of pulling my Savage apart and switching barrels from 308 to 7mm 08,,,Increasing barrel length from 20 to 24. I hope that doesn't upset the 308 guys to much as I still have 3 other 308s in the closet I just couldn't pass up the deal on a match Grade Barrel

rob, good luck with your build. I would like to see some pics of the rifle and groups when you get it all together. savages are good guns to build on, they use to be the only rifles I would own.

my youngest son says the same thing , 35.
he loves savage firearms .
and I must say they seem very accurate.

I think what makes these Rifle so attractive is the availability of after market parts ,,They are the Chevrolet of Firearms not meaning cheap just the amount of parts that make them perform. The Modular Bolt design makes these cheapies great for builds and the screw in barrel make the install fairly simple..I should this poh boy done in a few weeks and if theres no snow on the ground I'll take it to the range,,

no snow on the ground ?
I thought America defrosted a month ago

I,m talking next winter which seem to come a little earlier and stay a little later every year

..great stuff Scott, fine shooting. Tell your boy I've got some good tips for him..!

Well a bit of a snag with the barrel , wanted it blued and it came in Grey so I sent it back and optioned for the same in SS. I'm having no luck with a suitable stock ( I want Wood no plastic no Laminate) so I know a guy from the Mauser Forums who has a stock duplicater so I'm going to take my Sillouette stock to his shop and have it duplicated,,the only problem is the New barrel is for a long action and the stock is from a Short action I'll take the Camera along and get some pics for you guys of the Duplicating process

If I may, without meaning to offend, offer some advice. Measure and keep written records of your wind-speed at the target, it'll help you to dial in quicker. If you do hand load, try the Sierra 175gr MK, I find them to be better at 800 to 1500 than the 168's. Also, try to avoid long strings, shoot a max of 3 and break. You'll save a lot of ammo if your spotter calls your shot with better optics.. ;)

Thanks doc I know the 175 are better for that range. I see you picked up on my bad spotter calling it right when it was left made me miss a few trying to find where I was at for a few shoots the mirage was bad hot mid day with swirling winds. I have notes for my loads this shoot however no wind meters allowed and you get 10 shots in 10 min to hit the jug once your name is called to the line.
