Hello, Im looking for a 404 Jeffrey or 416 or 470 Double for Buffalo Hunting?

All three are capable of getting the job done. Key is which one suits you the most and you can place a shot accurately often in dangerous situations

Definitely, I have a friend that has a beautiful 470 NE, my dad shoots a Bolt Action 458 WM but it kicks like a donkey but manageable. I want to go Buffalo Hunting with him. I like the 470NE but a PH friend of mine suggested I look at a 404 Jeffrey

Personally, I think the 404J would be the better choice. Or even a 375 which is certainly enough gun for buffalo. And it's also more practical for plains game. Guns in both those calibers would generally be more affordable than a double rifle. If it's important to pretend to be Stewart Granger, then buy a big $$$ double gun. If you want to kill buffalo, buy yourself a good bolt rifle and use the extra money for another African safari.

Budget? For example you will find the following publicly listed at this time as but some examples
1. Champlain George Caswell Chapuis DR 470 $14,500
2. Gun Broker the cheapest today $8,000 for a 404 Jeffery caliber. The average price for this caliber also on Guns International is $18,000
3. You can buy a new Rigby in 404 Jeffery from their London shop in adorned for about $20,000 before taxes and delivery…if you have the money and just have to have a true Jeffery made by them $80,000
4. 458’s are just about everywhere you look some for as little as $1,500

Hope this gives you a feel

Or he can have a 404J made for him. I made mine last summer. Total cost was just over $2K. But I did most of the work myself. Still, I can't believe he couldn't have a nice (maybe not glamorous work of art) rifle made by a gunsmith for $5K. Or a lot less if he goes with totally no frills (e.g. synthetic stock and Creakote paint job). Nice thing about 404J is it can be built on a standard length action. Buying a magnum length action for 416, 458, etc can be pricey (and scarce).

I have a brand new unfired AHR 404 Jeffery I would Consider selling. Shoot me PM if interested.

if you find one under $5k you better be ready to pull the trigger quickly

... If it's important to pretend to be Stewart Granger...

I used a FN action for my 404, had PAC-NOR make me a custom contour barrel, and a man in WA state do my stock. All in I had about $6K in the project (and my stock was about half of that). It was worth it to me but time can be a factor. Being keen to watch for actions and appropriate fitting stocks for sale you could do this for half (or less even) I’d say.

IMO -

Go with a .416 Rigby bolt action.

.404 Jeffery is too hard to find ammo or components.

.470 will limit you to close range, for the most part.

If Mr. Rowland Ward shows up at no less than 150 yards away, I would have a hard time (I wouldn't even try) making the shot with a DR in .470.

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
