Starting the Tiny Ten

I have Blue Duiker, Grey Duiker, Steenbuck, Oribi, and Cape Grysbuck on my list to hunt this July when I return to EC. I was told that a special permit may be required on the Blue Duiker, Oribi and Cape Grysbuck. I became more and more interested in hunting the Tiny Ten after reading other's discussions on hunting them on other forums. They are lovely creatures. I purposely did not add the Vaal Rhebuck and Klipspringer to the list this trip on hearing how they were even more difficult to hunt. Needless to say....I'll be spending a WHOLE lot of time at the rifle range and on the sporting clay courses over the next few months. I agree with the others....the experience of this hunt is going to be amazing. And I doubt I'll return home empty handed.:praying:

I saw a number of klipspringer in Zim last trip but passed on them. Also passed on did-dik in TZ many years ago. I think we ran over 2 or 3 duiker driving at night to camp in Namibia in '07. Does that count?

I got to thinking and just realized that when I take my next of the tiny ten that I'll only have nine more to go!!!! ;)

These are definitely on the list.... In particular I want a dik dik. As a small boy we'd go to a friend of my mother's trophy room. The dik dik was her favorite mount over all the rest, which included all of the Big 5. I'd like to take one and have it mounted for her.

None by fair chase any way...

Of the three recorded, one was shot by accident over a waterhole by a unsupervised client mistaking it for a huge Duiker.
The second was a semi tame ram which kept with a group of sheep in a small camp. (The ram was well known and well advertised.
The third and largest was shot with a gun yet the "hunter" posed with a bow. (The tracker who accompanied this "hunter" now works for another well known outfitter and tells that the animal was even kept in a fridge over night).

So no, no man has yet taken a Vaalie by means of fair chase walk and stalk hunting with a bow. I have personally been trying on and off for the past 10 years and will be going on my SEVENTH hunt for one later this year.

That just put this little adventure square in my sights.
I think there is going to be a ten day dedicated Vaalie hunt with the Bow in my future.

If you took a picture, I'll accept it. :)

You'll need more than just luck. Maybe a 21 day hunt, with a lot of planning and homework, it could be done over a drinking spot.

I agree with the homework and planning. A lot of luck never hurts.

Just to clear up, drinking spot for the Vaal Rhebuck, not the hunter and PH.

Haha! That's classic!

Im sure if you go to a human drinking spot you can find someone who will tell you all you never wanted to know about bow hunting Vallies though!

I look forward to seeing what you collect! So far, only one out of ten for me.

I absolutely love hunting the tiny ten. Such a great and rewarding hunt for these little fellas!
Missing Oribi, Suni and Dik Dik now, even if I need to shoot another grey duiker and steenbok as I missed out on making them full mounts...
I think they are the trophies that I appreciate the most of all the ones I have taken while in Africa so far!

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
Ross
