As I sit here at work watching the count down clock on my phone tick away, to my first African safari I can't help but wonder what will be the first animal to hit the ground from my arrow. What was your first African animal taken with a bow?

Like the thread, kal I took the relaxed approach and arrowed a couple of Warthogs when I started bow hunting...

To me it was a great species to start off with, I could also see and test multiple arrows and broad heads...

Since then I've progressed a bit but those first ever bow kills will always stick with me, it was like sailing through uncharted waters ... :)

Have fun and as always only my very best!

My first African animal with a bow was a young Kudu cow.

Id love to have one to comment with but so far just the bang bang stick. Im not sure what I would go after 1st but I would love to do some spot and stalk bowhunting over there.

I started off slow and easy like Jaco.

and then this year's RSA first: "Reedbuck Interrupted"

Brickburn btw I think I have grown immune to those meds... Yup for a step up you should have wrestled it to ground!!! :)

Knowing what I know now...I probably would have put money on you to come out on top! :)

My best always

Bow hunting is as close as I want to get. Stalking to within twenty yards, That is a rush.

[At least the meds are not addictive. You'll be back around shortly.]

With you on both of those 15's still good as well!! :)

Very much unlike my personality... ;)

Not with bow, but my first African critter was a Thompsons gazelle, in Tanzania 1985. Holy crap I'm getting old!

My first african bow kill was a nyala
Walk and stalk took us an hour to get into fifty metres ,there was three bulls one was near 29inches ,the other two were around 26 and once we got into fifty .the big one turned ad walked off not knowing how close he was to dying
Then the smaller of three walked straight towards us and turned side on at thirty metres and the rest is a spectacular memory!!

Love the stories guys I think I can almost see your happy smiles while reading your first animal reports. Brickburn I never tire of the pictures of that buff.

I walk by him every day. Still not tired of it. When I do I'll have to trade him in for another one. :)

My 1st was an African Wild cat in Namibia .......... I think my PH was more excited then I was . We shoot plenty of feral cats here in Canada , I did not realize what I had done . No pressure LOL !

That's always the way it happens. My cat curse prevented me from getting one in the eastern cape. We were calling Caracal near where a sheep killer was known to live and I was advised not to shoot because it was a very high percentage spot for caracal (the animal I was feverishly trying for). We never got the Caracal, although we did see him at the next setup, and I missed out on my Wildcat as well. Oh well that's what happens when you roll the dice, I just wish I knew that I had a damn cat curse at the time!!!!!!!!!!!!! Arggggggggg

Very cool guys, I guess I didn't know feral cats were a trophy in Africa. I wounder was the first animal you took the first good animal you got an opportunity at or was it something special you held out for?

Kal feral cats (domestic cats gone wild ) are in Canada and the US ...African Wildcats are a true wildcat my understanding is they are very nocturnal and it is hardly ever seen in daylight hours , that is why it was so rare for me to have been able to take one with the bow .

Similar to the lottery, to get one during daylight, by chance.

Like the wolf is believed to be the ancestor of domestic dogs, the African wildcat is the ancestor of the housecat.
