So I have a brand new set of CH4D dies and I have also borrowed a brand new Redding FL resizing die from a friend and I'm having the same issue with both brands. Both brands of FL resizing dies are not resizing the neck properly, when I seat a bullet after resizing there is not enough neck tension. The Redding die is better than the CH die but definitely still not providing enough neck tension, actually not even close to enough neck tension, I don't even need to use the press to seat a bullet I can fairly easily seat a bullet by hand. I am having this issue with both Norman and Bertram brass through both of these dies.

Has anyone experienced this same issue? I have done some research online and have found a number of comments where people have mentioned they have had the same issue with the CH dies, sounds like it's a common problem but I haven't been able to find anything on the Redding dies. The last time I owned a 470NE I had Hornady dies and they worked fine with both Norma and Bertram brass, I never had an issue.

If anyone has any ideas on this issue, I'd love to hear what you have to say because I have pretty much got to the point where I have run out of ideas. I have even had my gunsmith who has 40 years experience, helping me on this issue and he has never seen anything like it either.

I think I can get my hands on another set of Hornady dies so I will probably try that as my next option but I'm getting a bit tired of not having any success and spending money on dies, as I'm sure most of you already know, 470NE dies are not cheap.

Obviously u are from Australia?

I would remove the sizer ball and try it. If it needs it you could sand it down with a drill. Did you measure a bullet by chance?

Yeah have checked the dimensions from both dies already, they seem fine 0.471” and checked bullet dimensions as well, they are Woodleighs, I think they were 0.4735” from memory. And yep Have tried resizing without the expanders in the die, same issue still.

Any chance of getting your hands on a Lee factory crimp die?

I’ve looked around for one, can’t get one. I probably could order one but you know how it goes, would probably be months before I get it. I know a gun smith that has made same crimp dies, I’m considering this option if the hornady dies I have coming don’t work.

@Aussie_Hunter,

Was this with new, used brass or a combination? I‘m wondering if you used only used brass and the necks are getting hard enough to no compress enough.

It's sounds like this is not your first rodeo. I'll ask anyways because sometimes we just need to go back to basics.

Is the die set correctly? Meaning is the ram almost touching the die at the top of the stroke? If you have already removed the expander ball and have not seen any difference. That is where my next investigation would take place. I have had to turn off the bottom of a few of my dies in order to bump shoulders of some brass that had tight champers. Just something to look at.

Yeah have done a lot of much around with making sure the die is set correctly and tried a few different things.
Turn off the bottom of a few of your dies? As in take some material of the bottom you mean?

Yes, to get it closer to the ram. Say the ram touches the bottom now. If you turned 1/8" off (3mm) it will allow the case to go a little further into the die. Because you can screw the die down the distance that was trimmed off.

Yeah ok I get what you are saying, I have definitely not tried that, interesting thought that one. And you have done this with a couple of dies?

You can always take a cast of the inside of the die. Obviously you will need to use a little care with that. You would have a better understanding of what is going on.

Yep my gunsmith also suggested this. I might go down this road.

You will then have an idea, no guess work. If your smith does that he could let you know real fast if trimming the die is an option. With it already being with him...it would not take that long for him to do the work if need be.

Had similar problem in the past and ground the top of the shell holder so case went farther into the die.
Also discarded the expander button.
