Was wondering if it is possible to take 3 guns to SA.My son is only 15 so dont think I can have him check any thru.Taking my 300wm and his 257 but was really thinking of taking his muzzlerloader also.I have checked and can get powder and primers there no problem. Thanks to anyone who can help with info.

I was in the same boat this past May. I took 3 rifles all under one permit with my name on it, no problem.

Just do not take repeats on Caliber. *

Thats good news as I thought I read a person could only take 2 guns.Phil did you check your own guns or use a service to do it.I checked my own guns last time with no problem but may use a service this time.

This past trip I used riflepermits.com and would do so again. The first time I did it myself and had no problem. So why use the service? In my opinion when using the service you now have an advocate at the airport who the SAPS people certainly know. In the end it's kind of more/less paying the bribe to the service. But if you're going during the main hunting season, getting through ahead of those who didn't pay the service and on your way has to be worth something.

I also scanned all of my forms and sent them via email for Henry to preview before I paid for FedEx to send the originals. Something I'd do again, that could save you some dollars in case there's an error.

Bill,
Just check as you need to have a Blackpowder competency card in order to purchase Black Powder in South Africa. When it comes to my personal hunters, I apply for the necessary permit around one year in advance and obtain the Black Powder and primers on their behalf.
This puts me on the correct side of the law when it comes to traveling with the stuff. The best powder that you will get here is WANO.

All the best and good luck with your hunt.

Take Care,
Marius

Just jumped onto the SAPS site and found circumstances under which they will allow more than one firearm of the same caliber.
"Good Cause shown."

"An application for more than one firearm of the same calibre

The Registrar may in good cause shown, issue a permit in respect of more than one firearm per calibre to a person who will be using the firearms for the under mentioned purpose:

to a foreign visitor for the purpose of hunting

to a foreign visitor to display the firearm and ammunition at a trade show or collectors show or to display firearms or ammunition at a sport of hunting trade show.

To a foreign visitor to participate in a competitive sport shooting event organised by recognised business, hunting, sport-shooting or collectors organisation."

Thanks marius did not know that rule. They sure dont make it easy to muzzlerloader hunt over seas at all.Have you notice how much of that powder your hunters have loaded to get there gun to shot like it does for them at home.

Bill,
There are other powders available for sure, but the WANO is the best available here which is worth hunting with. Still not up to the same standard to what you guys are use to, and does not burn as clean. Using WANO, the range was affected slightly, but still acceptable.
Let me send an email quick and see if the hunter can remember the load he used. I will post as soon as I have an answer.

Bill,
Here is an idea of the effect of what WANO will give you.
Original Load: 200grains of 777 Magnum pellets in front of a 300gr bullet for a Velocity of 2400fps
WANO Load: 150 grains of loose WANO FF in front of a 300gr bullet for a velocity of 1600fps.

Take Care,
Marius

Thanks marius,we normally shoot blackhorn 120 grains which equals about 150 grains of 777.Looks like a 150 grains of wano will be slower but will work for shoots out to 100yds.What animals did your client take with you and how did you think the muzzy did.

Bill,
Not quite sure what Muzzleloader you are using, but if you are using shotgun primers, then you will only load 110grains of WANO, no more.If you want to sight your rifle in at home to be close to what you can expect on the WANO, then the load will be similar if you loaded 85gr of 777.
My hunter shot Vaal Rhebuck, Waterbuck, Oribi, Warthog and Duiker among others. Apart from the Muzzlebreak? I would have loved to see it perform with the 777.

dakota 's muzzy is a t/c pro hunter with a 28" barrel in 50cal. no muzzle break. he shot his first elk at 286 yds with it so it can reach out there if needed.Would keep shots over in SA to under 150yds or 100 as he wants to use it on eland if he cant get with his bow.How did it do on his waterbuck it go far after the shot or he anchor it on the spot.

Well, we saw him from a long way. Got around them, and stalked in on them. Could only see the cows, but were really close. Some patience, and he showed himself quartering away at 10yds, so don't think this situation is a fair reflection.
To give you an idea, we picked the wad out of him.

Wow cant believe you could not sneak in another 5yds and make it an easy shot.lol I guess he kind of went to sleep right there were he was shot.
