Never hunted Africa but am doing some research and kicking some thoughts around. What I want to know is who has shot a cow buffalo and how was the hunt? I assume a buffalo hunt is a buffalo hunt regardless of the type or size your hunting. I don't mind shooting small or female animals at all. I just drove over 3,000 miles and spent ten days on a mountain and shot a mule deer doe so I'm about hunting not necessarily big animals. I've seen where cows can be less than half the cost of a big bull and personally I would just as soon have more money for more hunting. Don't get it wrong, with unlimited funds I would be a trophy hunter but at this time I feel my money is better invested in the journey itself. Any of you guys think this way or have a desire to shoot cows?

If you look through the hunting deals you should come across some hunts like this. Nothing wrong with cow buffalo hunts, many hunters have done them.

Cows can be just as nasty as any bull.
more cranky if there are calves around.

We do quite a number of cow hunts every year, the hunt is the same as with bulls, accept that you are normally closer to larger herds(not following bachelors)these herds always have calves with them which makes them alert and agressive.A cow can even make a nice trophy, have a look at my website gallery and you will see that a cow can be quite impressive. For a first time big five hunt that suits ones pocket nothing better than a buffalo cow.

Nice work:thumbsup:

I would look into those hunts if they interest you, they are affordable, and some good outfitters offer them on AH. :)

Pieter (Paw Print) nailed it. A buff cow hunt can be as exiting and sometimes even more challenging than a bull hunt...

The challenge hunting for a buff cow is (as Pieter said) that they're usually in larger groups and have calves with them. Finding the herd might be easier than finding a lone bull or bachelor herd but getting a shooting opportunity at an old cow that doesn't have any breeding potential anymore can prove to be very hard. You may end up spending many miles on foot, seeing and getting close to herds many times without getting a shooting opportunity. And as Pieter said - cows with calves are alert and usually not very friendly...

A good DG hunt without the price tag of a trophy hunt.

What kind of price difference is there between average bull vs. cow or cull?

Thanks!

Brad

Well my best guess is $5000 to $6000 at a minimum, unless you pick up on some deal somewhere....and I would look at every hunt, to make sure you are not cutting too many corners.

Trophy fees on cows are around $3500 and bulls under #40 $9500,so like enysse said about $6000 difference!

Hunting Buffalo cows can be as rewarding as hunting the Bulls. The obvious difference being the trophy itself , although they make impressive mounts as shown above by Bushwack .
Prices will vary , as will the hunting conditions. From free range open area reserve hunts to smaller ranches with limited choice of animals , and everything in between. It just depends what you want.
I have 3 Buffalo cow hunts available for 2014 with free range herds in an open reserve in the South African lowveld. These hunts are 7 day all inclusive hunts @ $ 5 500. Any of the plains game species in the surrounding area can be added at regular trophy fees. Its a great way of hunting in a big 5 area and getting the full experience. The hunts need to be conducted before 31 march 2014.
