Winchester Model 70 300 H&H Magnum Super Grade

Finally got around to shooting this rifle. I loaded a sight in load and then one hunting load with a 165 gr. Nosler Partition. 7/8" center-to-center. Velocity right at 3150 fps. Not bad for first load. Good enough for opening day here in Texas is a couple weeks.

I messed up when I was shooting. I shot my first two bullets at the top target then my third at the bottom. Had to paste the third shot in with the first two. lol

That`s the best 500yard group I`ve ever seen...:LOL

Congratulations. Wonderfull rifle.

I wonder if younger generations of shooters will appeciate/understand such gun?...or it`s all about Blasers in 6,5CM..

I'm sure the younger generations will. I'm only in my mid-thirties myself, though I am definitely in the minority with my taste in firearms. I laugh when some people scoff "how good does that old thing shoot?"

Its a great round, have owned several myself, one just like yours too. Of course I sold it for something else like an idiot!
Currently have a beautiful mid 80's XTR LTD run rifle with fancy walnut that shoots damn fine and though its a push feed, its behavior is flawless, feeds empties from the magazine.

… Sweet Deal & a true “diamond in the rough!” Congrats on a keen eye & seeing the true potential of a nostalgic make, model & caliber!

I see from the safety that your Model 70 find is not just pre-64, but pre-War. All of my competition Model 70's were pre-War, because of the smoothness of the action and the clip slot.

My plains game rifle for my three African hunts was a Model 70 .300 H&H. I preferred it over its more modern counterpart, the .300 Winchester Magnum, because of the totally reliable feeding action of the sloping shoulder case, and that trait proved itself repeatedly in the field. I used Winchester factory loads of 180 grain Silver Tips exclusively and found them accurate and effective.

No, we are hopelessly lost. :)

One thing I discovered is how smooth feeding the 300 H&H is. Makes everything else feel sloppy.

Short story: I bought a Model 70 300 H&H Magnum Super Grade for $400.

Long Story: I wandered into a local gun shop near Houston a few months back. Was considering a nice Standard pre-64 Model 70 in .270 Win. for a good price, but I asked if they had anymore Model 70s. They said they had one other "but it has paint on the stock and needs a lot of TLC." I asked to look at it. I saw real fast that it was a Super Grade. Looked at the hang tag and it was marked a a 300 Win Mag, but the barrel was stamped "300 Magnum". I assumed it was 300 &H as it was too early for a Win Mag. I looked down the barrel and the bore was great. Asked them how much and they said $400. Needless to say, I bought it.

Restoring the stock was beyond my skill set. Sent it to a guy highly recommended by a friend whom he had used many time for his collection of pre-64s. Almost too nice to shoot now. Almost. After I work up a load for it, I'll be packing it this deer coming season in Texas.

Excellent find. Curious what shop in Houston. I’m there all the time and never find stuff like that. I’ve got a nearly identical .300 H&H as well as several non super grades.

AGR Outdoors in Cypress. They are definitely worth the visit.

Apparently someone's relative died and they were bringing in his collection 5 rifles at a time. I got one of the last. Wish I would have gotten in on that earlier. They said they had Model 70 .257 Roberts carbines and many others calibers configuration. I also picked up a Sako Deluxe .30-06 for a good deal.

I’ve been in there a few times but they’ve never had anything like that. Let alone priced so low. I’ll have to pop in more often.

Collector’s tends to have Pre64’s the most frequently. They turns quick for them though, and it’s never at prices like that. Try the Federal Trophy Bonded Tipped. All of my 300’s shoot it very well.

What makes a Winchester Model 70 a "Super Grade"?

I do have a Model 70, but no idea, what "Grade".

The stock must have the horn tip on the fore end. And the wood is generally nicer.

Higher grade wood and higher finish on the metal. Barrels are usually slick, (no sights) at least on the more recent models,

Checkering is a factor also. Usually the SG will be hand checkered in earlier models and wrap clear around the bottom of the forepart of the stock.
Pistol grip cap and forend tip are or should be ebony and the floor plate should state Super Grade on it.

Here is a 1971 SG in .270 Win I recently got. Note the checkering, fancy wood and ebony tips. Also the stock bolt plugs. Many models have one in the rear, this has two.
It also has a jeweled bolt and mag follower.
