for shooting Oryx ---- is .270 WSM ok ?

Hope this is not an incendiary post -- but is a .270WSM a good acceptable choice for Oryx?

I was thinking of a 140 gr bullet. Accubond or a Barnes Triple X whatever they are called.

I have to be honest - I am not going to Africa - but I DID draw an Oryx tag in New Mexico USA. So BOOM - I'm going Oryx hunting. I already have a .270WSM so I am thinking of using that. Otherwise it will have to be wait for a shot at 225 yards or less with a 45/70, which I know will shoot clean through an Oryx; or just about anything else.

You should ask youself the question: Am I confident with my .270? As long as you are confident a .243 will do the job. It is not the size of the bullet that will do the job but the accurate bullet. An old time friend and great hunter told me that a small hole in the heart is better than a big hole anywhere else!

To make a long story short. Your .270 will be fine as long as you know that you can put a well placed bullet in the Oryx.

If you can shoot it accurately out to the ranges you intend to shoot your 270 wsm will work fine just use premium ammo. Apoorly desined bullet at a long distance spells disaster.

Yep. What they said. With good bullets you'll be fine. Just wait for a high-percentage shot. Wounded gemsbok can go a very, very long way. Those are two-day hunts right? I'd take a bunch of ice and prepare to take good care of the meat. That hunt is one of the few ways you can actually get good African meat here in the states. Enjoy!

Actually I drew an "off range" tag. I have whole month of jan to get-r-done

Take the 270 WSM. The Accubonds or Barnes bullets will be plenty.

Have you another rifle that you were thinking of? In a differant caliber?

well - I am gonna take a 45/70 Guide gun

and if it looks like I can get as close 200 yards -- use that

the place we will be hunting though - may not allow that close distance.

I don't really see the possibility of buying another gun before Jan

If I need I will borrow a 7mm Mag or something -- but after responses here I don't think I will need to.

I can second Raseni, have about 10 with a 270Win, never had an issue. The Accubonds do a great job.

I am off on my first trip to Africa this September (Eastern Cape) and will also be bringing my .270WSM. It is a plains game hunt where I hope to take a Gemsbok (nice photos Brickburn and Raseni), Kudu and other plains game with it.

This is the only rifle I use, so I am very comfortable with it, but will be at the range all summer anyway.

I currently shoot 140 Accubonds, but would it be worth bringing the 150 Nosler Partitions?

Stick with the Accubonds, fly straighter and longer.

My son killed his with a 243/ Barnes TSX. The 270 will do the job just fine.

Your .270 is fine, I have one, and it will not let you down. Have taken bluewildebeest with mine at 200m plus, shot placement and good ammo, enjoy ypur trip!

I know this is a long time after this post was created, but I'm headed to South Africa for my first trip this fall (for the USA). I'm taking a 270 WIN because that is what I have to work with, but I'm also reloading. Since this topic revolves around the 270 I was hoping that some might have a suggestion on a particular bullet. I'm currently looking at a 150gr Swift A-Frame or a 150gr Barnes TSX. Blue wildebeest is currently my largest animal on the list, and I'm not going to be hunting dangerous game.

Welcome to AH. Your 270 will be fine if you are confident with it. The 150gr TSX is a premium bullet that will do the job if placed in the zone. I will suggest one thing though, speak to your PH and find out how he feels about the 270. The blue wildebeest is not called 'the poor man's buffalo' for nothing and some PH's get skittish with the lighter calibers. Let us know what happens..
