Hello, I'm saving for a new rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic in 300 Weatherby Magnum caliber. The rifle has a barrel length of 24 "and I want to know if this length is sufficient to achieve the maximum performance gauge. I want to know if the bullet loses a lot of speed, power and scope. I also want to know what you think of the rifle and I have chosen gauge.

Hello Oscar, the Vangaurds are a good rifle for no more than they cost. The 300 Weatherby is an awsome caliber if you don't mind the recoil. I have a Vangaurd myself but it is not in a Weatherby caliber. Weatherby ammo is expensive and not always available which is why I chose one in a standard caliber. I think you will be very happy with this rifle.

The Weatherby Vangaurds are excellent rifles ,though I do not own one but have used my brothers .300 Vangaurd quite a lot its a pretty light and handsome rifle.
I have 5 of the calibers.22/.270/300/375 H&H & .460 wm by Weatherby in deluxe model. These are the Rifles " MADE IN HEAVEN" the quality is unquestionable , have never had any problem either with the actions or the optics. Buy a weatherby for yourself & your posterity .
.300 WM is a caliber most astounding and remarkable and has enough fire to bring down from a duiker to a pachyderm you can never be under gunned. The velocity , flat trejectory and the impact is what Weatherby believes in for a clean one shot kill.
The ammo is little expensive but gives out the best results, you have wide variety of bullet grainage to choose , from 130 to 220 .
You wont regret ever to own a WEATHERBY.

A 220 grain RN bullet with a muzzle velocity of 2900 FPS retains the velocity of 1557 at 500 yards, you can well imagine the impact pressure .
The barrel length is perfect for the vangaurds, you intend procuring.

If you're interested in the Vanguard in 300Wby, I would have to say go for it! I have one of the Sub-MOA variants they put out a few years ago, they still list it on their website at RRP of USD999.00; I would personally would only buy one if you're going to get the sub-MOA. These are rifles taken from standard production, however a perfect combination of barrel, action, machining tolerance and workmanship sometimes result in a very accurate factory rifle. I guess Weatherby are taking advantage of good QC.

You'll lose a good 100fps with the Vanguard's 24" barrel as opposed to the standard 26", but nothing at the other end can tell the difference. I load mine exclusively with a 180gr Woodleigh Protected Point at 2950fps and 5 shot groups average 0.75".
The recoil out of this rifle is easy to handle as with the standard recoil pad the rifle really does bounce and if you have a good gunsmith, the trigger is not bad and can be adjusted on the light side with 100% reliability (in my rifle after 3 years and 500 rounds).
My rifle wears a Leupold 4.5-14x56 VXL which sits very low around the barrel and with this scope I have shot pigs in full moonlight without a light on stubble paddocks.
As far as the calibre goes, you're obviously looking to shoot at some distance if you're taking a .300 over a .308Win... My best one shot kill was a fallow stag at 515 metres. Carry a trajectory chart taped to the forearm and a range-finder and you're in business! I've attached the ballistics charts for my pet loads.
In Africa I have taken maybe 30 species with this calibre; all shapes and sizes. Mountain Zebra at 250 yards, Sable at 275 yards with full length penetration, Tsessebe at 150 yards, Jackal at 300 yards, Caracal at 30 yards!
I would feel comfortable using the rifle on most game; I prefer something a bit "fatter" on Eland and Buffalo - they just look big! You also have minimum calibre regulations for some of the big stuff! I personally would not use it on the heavyweights.
Outstanding choice. Look after your barrel, get a good scope, and take a solid rest, 'cause 300 yards is a long way even for an accurate rifle!
Hello friends, I can only take my hat off to their replies, and I confirm the above, every time I have more desire to have my Sinthetyc Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Weatherby Magnum caliber (although few shots will be expensive and a cartridge box can last me years ).

24" in fine for most .30. 26" might allow a little more burn time for the big Weatherby case. If you want maximum performance 26" is it. But frankly I'm having a new .300 Win Mag built with a 24" barrel It's a handy length and you don't lose much with the shorter barrel.
If you don't reload this will be an expensive gun to shoot. .300 Win Mag is much less expensive, more readily available, and will do almost the same thing. Just check any ballistics charts for the two calibers. The difference in drop is almost insignificant at most distances. But everyone has an opinion and you should do what you want.
I have a Vanguard in .223. It shoots 1/2 MOA groups using cheap remanufactured ammo. And this with no improvements. This is out of the regular old Vanguard - not the sub-moa version. Can't promise you the same with your rifle but it wouldn't surprise me. Good shooting!

Eric, you're spot on with your comments on the 300 Win Mag. Oscar this is good advice from Eric if ammo cost is a concern. I enjoy owning slightly obscure calibres which is why my big 30 cal is a Weatherby, my 22 centrefire is a swift, and my big stick is a 450 Ackley.
My approach is to get my hands on the ammo first. For the Ackley I had 500 cases made in 1996 and they're still going strong. For the 300 Weatherby I actually found a lady on eBay who had 7 boxes of brand new unprimed Weatherby brass by Norma in the old yellow red and brown box. Got these for USD70!! So source your ammo or brass first, the rifle will be easy.

Oscar, an old friend of mine, who is VERY picky about rifles, bought one on sale at Wal Mart on a whim. Although quite plain in appearance, it was and is a superior shooter right out of the box. He used it on a nice Canadian moose last fall with absolutely no complaints. You might lose a little speed with the 24" barrel, but your quarry will not notice.
All-in-all, a great value for the money.
I already have decided, and I ordered the rifle in caliber Weatherby Vanguard 300 Weatherby Magnum. I have hesitated in the caliber, as I also want to hunt some roe and 300 Wea Magnum enormous damage done to these little animals (I thought buying the rifle in 257 Weatherby Magnum). The rifle has a viewfinder Pentaflex that insurance is not known in the U.S., and 2.5-10x50 Illuminated. The entire set costs € 750 which is equivalent to 1031.70 U.S. dollars.
Postscript: The pity is that this rifle is not made in the 270 Weatherby Magnum cartridge, but the latter had been chosen.

Regarding massive damage to smaller species, if you use a bullet that is rated at the correct impact velocity to suit your style of hunting you will probably avoid any blow-ups. Woodleigh make "Protected Point" bullets in 180gr and 200gr that are designed for .300 magnum impact velocities. I have used these extensively ton all sorts of African species and many wild pigs here at home with great success and generally no massive blow-ups, especially at long range.
