Ive been beating myself up over basic trip insurance and @Global Rescue. We leave for RSA and Zim in less than a month. Ive never taken insurance before; but its our Honeymoon and we're hunting lion. Ive hunted with Marius at KMG Safaris in the past and feel confident that he can handle just about anything; but still theres a nagging thought of what if?

Part of me says its a good investment in peace of mind and the other part says its money I could spend on my bride and more hunting....

Lets hear some arguments PRO & CON...

Check your and Marius' insurance first!! My US-based insurance policy pays for emergency medical transport from ANY hospital in the world ... assuming I can get to a hospital. My SA outfitter carried emergency evacuation insurance to the nearest hospital as part of his overall business insurance policy so I was VERY comfortable NOT purchasing extra insurance. I know that it is possible in SA for an outfitter to carry this type of insurance ... less sure about Zimbabwe!!

Well my AMEX platinum card has a striped down medical evacuation. However this trip I purchase Global Rescue because, I was going to Zambia near an election and their was a travel warning. Little did I know RSA was having an election too and rioting in Joberg. It turned out I wasted money as all was quite where I was, other then downtown Joberg, which I just stayed away from.

My two cents, and not trying to sound like someone's old man...Medivac is about $25,000 from the Caribbean to North America, and probably much more from Africa. You cannot be transported without medical care and assessment, so take on another $20k or so. Your premiums will be in the range of a few hundred dollars. Chances are you will not use your insurance, that's how Global Rescue and insurers make money. They make their profit on the odds you won't file a claim. But, would you go to any casino or stock exchange and put 45k on any "sure thing" ? I would prefer to transfer the financial gambling to them.

I have never used it, but If I was going to any other country in southern Africa other than SA or Namibia, I would certainly consider Global rescue and most likely purchase it if I was hunting certain animals or in certain more rural areas. For a couple $100 bucks for 1-2 weeks of coverage, its worth it to me

From that response I guess it can be seen now! :E Shocked:

Yes it can, wow

Just in case all the experience with zoos and circuses manages to lull one into a false sense about dangerous game hunting.
Lions are dangerous IMHO.

I am not generally a fan of insurance.
Contrary to that I wouldn't be without Global Rescue coverage on a DG hunt.
Rather inexpensive peace of mind I'd say.

Just because you don't use insurance doesn't mean the money was wasted!

We've never done Global rescue in South Africa or Namibia but have always ensured that our medical insurance covered us if we had to be taken to a private clinic in one of these countries. In less civilized parts of the world, I've taken it.

I always take travel/medical insurance.

I think there is two aspects, Trip Interruption/Cancellation and Medical/Evacuation. I've purchased the full policy for our trips to Zimbabwe, New Zealand and this year for Mozambique. Once I purchase the Trip Interruption/Cancellation policy, the add on for Medical/Evacuation is not too expensive. It really comes to how risk adverse are you relative to international travel.

My federal blue cross will over me in foreign countries. RSA did the first heart transplant. May be better off in the hospital there than here with our outrageous bills

Edelweiss, thanks for considering Global Rescue for your trip. Global Rescue’s medical and security evacuation memberships are different from travel insurance in that we perform/provide the services and employ the paramedics, doctors and former military special operators. All of our memberships include field rescue (from the point of injury or illness) to your home hospital of choice and start at $119. Our Signature Travel Insurance product is sold separately and is available to our members who are U.S. citizens. It protects against financial loss (trip cancellation, lost baggage, hospital expenses etc.) and includes an option that allows you to cancel for any reason and get up to 75% of your trip investment back. We’re happy to talk about your specific trip and some options. Feel free to call us at 617-459-4200 or email memberservices@globalrescue.com. Safe travels!
