Curious as this is our 1st trip to Africa, I asked our outfitter to take us shopping for some local handmade items to remember our trip. Question is...suggestions???? prices???? (We don't have unlimited funds) Headed to Limpopo Region near Lephalale, S Africa Thanks!!!

There is a shop in Lephalale with decent prices.

Then you have a large shop on the roadside, between Lephalale and Modimolle where you will find all kinds of souvenirs from Africa, and the prices are fair, I have been there three time but cannot be more precise about its location, however, I am sure your outfitted knows about it.

Forget about one called the Black Mamba it is too expensive.

There is also a large shop at the airport, with beautiful items, but higher prices, it is worth al least browsing through it.

do the villages have their own hand crafted items (bowls, jewelry, etc)? Are we talkin' $20, $50, $100??? We scheduled a day just to travel around, shop, take pics..

It is all a haggle/negotiated price. (some places will have price tags)
You decide where to set the limit on the price.
    Strike a deal or don't.
Be willing to walk away and the price might come down.

You'll see everything from "stuff" to art.

The crafts come from all over. Some places create their own articles.
    Some places are co-ops.

have fun on your shopping/touring day.

I don't know about the Limpopo Region I know in East london they have what I call street venders a lot of hand carved stuff even coffee tables and like BRICKBURN said It is all a haggle/negotiated price but it is cash and carry. And I'm sure this area your going to has the samething as stated earlier check with your outfitter they'll know. Just remember the prices are in Rand so what I do is divide by 8 to get a rough cost in US dollars. as an exsample I bought a pair of Giraffes with there necks twisted around each other, my daughter just had to have one. cost in the gift shop 35 Rand in USD about $4.37 and in most gift shops they take credit cards so you credit card company will do the figuring for you.

Never forget my Courteney kudu shoes from Zim in '96. $300 Zim dollars. $30US! Still have them and still wear them! Same shoes are now much more than that.

I have found that a high pitched whistle, a slight turn and side ways shake of the head, and a wooheee all in one sentence, usually drops the price by about a third.. :)

Secondly I would like to add that such gestures usually do not work well on hunting shows... :) :) or not with myself at least...:p

    My best always
