Well as some of you know I have just recently bought a Remington 700 in a .375 H&H. I've already made up my mind to use Warne bases and rings. What I would like is some recommendations on blue collar priced scopes for it as I have never owned a .375 before and have no idea what scopes work best with the kick of a 375 H&H. Thanks Bob

    Bob,

I am no expert and this is free advise. You know how valuable that is! A couple of thoughts and questions to consider:

If you are using Warn QD mounts, for follow up in the jess you don't need a low power scope.

    Is this a DG rifle, and shots are <150 yards. 1x4 , 1.5x5 ,2x6?

If you are taking only one gun to Africa for everything and shots are probably <250 yards. 1.5x5, 2x6, 3x9?

Are you going to use it in the western US/Alaska for elk, brown bear where you might need a >300 yd shot? 3x9, 2.5x10,4x12?

There are a lot of good quality scope manufactures out there. Shop for the one that meets your needs, reticle, height, adjustable/capped turret, quality, price point. etc.

Two things I want in the next scope for my 375. 1" tube with a medium size objective lens to keep my head low to the stock and an illuminated dot for those 5-10 minutes at dawn and dusk when I can't see the cross hairs.(my eyes are getting worse with age) If any one has suggestions I am open and in the market. I am planning to compare scopes at DSC in January.

Hope I haven't muddied up the waters to much. All the best and let us know what you get.

You need something thats going to hold-up,, those 375s will kill a cheaply made scope,,,even mess up a Few expensive ones,,,having said that I have used Redfields (Phoenix) Leupolds, Vortex,,and I,m gong for a Nikon next,,all are built tough ,and with the exception Of the old Redfields have lifetime Warranty ,,all are mid priced scopes,,and work well and vary in power from 3x9 to 4x12 ,,Cabelas has a Sale on Nikon going on right now you may see what they have to offer

Thanks wheels good advice, thats what I needed something to get me thinking fact is it will be my all around rifle I'm thinking DG in africa but I don't want to be limited to 100/150 yrd shots should something walk out at 300 yrds that I can't live without. And I hadn't even taken Alaska in to mind fact is that I plan to retire in 2 years and go back home to Alaska where I would use it for bear, moose and Caribou. thanks for giving the bain a kick start.

    Bob,

In the past and recent at that, I'd have encouraged you to look at the Zeiss Conquest series. But, having had my 2nd go down while in Africa and recently a 3rd go down, I've lost faith.

Having talked to Michael at B&M Rifles, I found out he used to use nothing but Leupolds but he also grew tired of sending them back after his big bores would chew them up. He has slowly started converting completely over to Nikons. So far after I think at least a 1000 rounds or so through his various rifles, he has yet to have a Nikon break.

So I'm headed back to Nikon having recently put a 1-4 on my .458B&M. I think I paid $269? The 2-8x32 can be had for $289, the 2.5-10x42 for $389. Either of those last two I'd consider to be great for PG. The 1-4x20 obviously for DG, although I'd shoot at anything at 100yards with that scope.

I appreciate top glass like Swarovski, but that superior glass doesn't mean a thing if the reticles or lens goes loose.

Zeiss Conquest fail? Sorry to hear that, I am a huge fan of them. Have taken 2 of them to Africa, a 4X and a 3-9x50 and my brother took a 3-9x40 on a .300 H&H as well, no problems on any. I used a Kahles 3-9 last trip in Zim, also a good scope. I too like the Nikon, have 3 mounted, one on my .404Jeff, a Monarch African. Ziess Conquest's are assembled at Leupold BTW.

Nowhere near as sorry as me. The last one to go is my beloved 6.5-20 I use when Coues deer hunting. It has only seen a handful of shots on my 7mm. I then used it on my son's gentle .308 for load development. I was using on my new Ruger #1 for load development. I took it off to clean the rifle and put it back on. Next trip to the range it was shooting way right and I couldn't get it closer than 4" from center. That one really bums me, I've used that 20x to drop some Coues at long range, one at 400 yards.

Maybe - but sounds like maybe a mounting vice scope issue. I have a couple of conquests which have seen extensive travel and shooting no issues.

Leupold is building the new Redfields. I have a 2x7 on a 300 short mag that I like real well. I put a 2x3 weaver on my 375.

Checked that out and no dice, then put a new scope on. The new one had no issue.

Zeiss sent a new one back on the first. The second has been with them for about 6 weeks now and have not heard back, going to be calling them this week.

I can't complain about their customer service. The first went down just before leaving for my first African trip, they got that one back to me very quickly. Good customer service or not, having a scope go down while on the trip is a bad thing.

They had a 1-4 with an illuminated reticle, but no longer make it. I hope they reconsider that decision.
