Hello,
I am planning a trip to Africa for my brother and I in 2012. We would like to hunt Cape Buffalo. Any tips and references would be great! Thanks! Oh, by the way, neither one of us has ever been to Africa before.

I can only speak from my own experience hunting in Namibia with Van Heerden Safaris. Hunting in Namibia.
The newly created Dzoti conservancy borders three national parks so this speaks for itself. I guess it depends on what sort of hunting experience you want but if you are Ok with tented safaris then I recommend these guys.

all the best

jumpgirl77,

Firstly welcome to Hunting Africa, you are on the right track starting early with your planning. Take peoples advice that hunted Africa before.

Then there is going to be a lot of guys that will tell you how nice it is going to be, some will tell you they are offering you 5 star lodging and guarantee you a nice Buffalo trophy.

Well listen to all the wonderful things and make your own mind up. The choice is yours, tented camp (basic amenities - shower, flushing toilet etc.), soft bed to sleep on good food and wild nature around you... no fences etc. Bugs in your tent, wake up at 4 am go out find Cape Buffalo tracks follow them for hours, eat lunch out in the bush, walk some more and return back to camp aroun 6 pm. Sit around the firepit and discuss the day's hunt, perhaps you bagged it today... who knows. Have dinner, go to bed and... tomorrow same story, however you might just bump into a huge Livingstone Eland or some other huntable specie. That is the thrill of hunting. Hell, that is life.

Or.... luxury accommodation drive out see buffalo, maybe track it shoot it, go out tomorrow shoot something else. The problem here, and that is my opinion, you might not enjoy it and the memories will fade quickly.

The long and short of this is you are going to be confronted with a lot of choices, make the right decision because Africa wants to see you back here many times.

Decide what you want, easy; roughing it with at least some comfort (you need that rest and hot shower)
How many days will suit you, budget etc.
Cape Buffalo, there are so many great countries you can go to, Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe.. look at your options.
Read about hunting in the different countries.
Check references, etc.

Happy planning, will send you reading material etc.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
Ross
