We use the example of Kenya banning hunting in 1978, and the subsequent loss of 70% of the countries wildlife since that date. This is one of our strongest examples of using hunting for conservation.

Malawi should also be another example of a country we should be able to use. We don't use this example and it is probably due to a lack of knowledge.

I knew people who hunted Malawi in the late 50's into the early 60's, but they have long since passed away. I also remember friends of the family from Malawi that came to Tanzania to hunt buffalo with us in the late 60's for meat. I am not sure if that was because hunting had been stopped in Malawi at the time or if it was just easier to hunt with us.

Hopefully there are some people on this site that have personal knowledge or know of information in the public domain that can help us with this. As a group, can we answer a few questions:

When did Malawi originally stop hunting?

Do we have any information regarding wildlife figures and their dispersion at that time?

Hunting was reopened in 1987 and immediately shut back down due to problems. It was then reopened in 2009. The only operation I am aware of is a 1000 hectare high fenced operation in the southern part of the country.

Note, when I click on Cluny Safaris in the above post on AH, I am directed to a porn site. (They were probably hacked)

Do we have any knowledge of wildlife census figures now?

Evidently there are not enough animals to promote a hunting industry other than a 1000 H fenced area from what I am gathering.

My understanding is that wildlife is now confined to National Parks with very little living outside of the NP's. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge or information concerning this?

Does anyone know anything else about hunting in Malawi?

All thoughts and comments are appreciated. Possibly we can show another example of how stopping hunting has depleted a nations wildlife resources.

Good topic Bob
Not sure I can intelligently add anything. When I hunted with Grant in Moz in 2012, the lady and her husband that managed his Muanza camp, lived in Malawi during the "off season". After dinner one night I had a discussion with them about this very topic. Their take on it was not very promising. They said the poaching was rampant and there were not a lot of wildlife remaining. At least not in the area that they resided. Malawi is one of the countries in Africa that is almost invisible. Most people have never even heard of it, much less knows where it is. (I was one of those people at one time!)

Thanks for the information Wes.

Some of the old hunting books talk about hunting the southern parts of the country. Especially elephant hunting along the Shire River and the swamp. If I remember correct, Rushby, Taylor and Sutherland hunted ivory in the area. (This is off the top of my head without researching) A German named Bauer also hunted this area for ivory.

Friends lived in the northern part of Malawi in the 60's and they had pg along with lions and leopards around their house. Not sure about numbers or population densities though.

Malawi's population is an issues with over 17m people in an area smaller than Arkansas. Population is 145 per sq kilometer.

With those population densities, it no small wonder that they have any wildlife left! Wow!

One of the poorest nations on the face of the earth with a strong birth rate!
The only other thing I know about this country is that it's where Madonna use to go get kids.

Not sure if I knew that. I think Angelina Jolie may have adopted from there too. A different type of hunting!?!?.:)

Thanks for this thread. It will be interesting to ask any anti or possible anti what they would do about wildlife in Malawi. Great to watch them squirm.

Appreciate it K.

Hopefully someone with knowledge of what happened is out there that can fill in the gaps for us. Or possibly someone can find articles or old wildlife department records.

Bossie,

Looking forward to photos and hearing more about it. Certainly want to know what you find out about hunting in the country, and animal populations outside of the parks.

Hope you have a great business venture.

I will be 75 miles from the N end of the lake starting Friday.

All the best.

Hi Guys
Finally I have some time to get a few more pictures up.
Thank for the phone call @Wheels.

We are in the middle of the raining season here in Malawi, so not much is happening besides getting stuck in the mud almost every day.
So far I did find out that hunting was never actually banned in Malawi, there used to be hunting in the National reserves but that came to an end. The main reason there is no hunting in Malawi is the lack of area and available grounds.
I will try and get more info as I meet people.

There was about 6 hours to actually get something done, so basic training started.

Planting and levelling the straining poles.

The only possible way to get concrete delivered to the poles is by transporting it in the loader bucket of our JCB

And then of course there is areas that are still to wet for even the JCB to reach
