This is a Dangerus Game Rifle in .404Jeffery. My “ Jeffery “was built on a standard length
98 Mauser action . The action and magazine box were modified to fit. Barrel length 26” by Lothar Walther, stock made walnut. Magazine box of 3 cartridges.
I use cartridges from Hornady with bullet DGX 26g/400gr and RWS soft point bullet 26g/400gr .
My favorite scopes MeoPro 3-9 x 42.
This rifle has second barrel / 24”/ in calibere 375 H&H Mag.
The 404 Jeffery introducet in 1909 and chambered in Mauser action. The 10,75 x 73 became the workhorse of several African Game Departments.
Not nearly as famous as other cartridges for African Big Game, but much more widely used.
The 404 Jeffery in modern loadings is better than ever, and will remain one of the greatest cartridges for Big Game in Africa.

I should have my 404 to me sometime around March. Mine will be built on a Winchester 1917 Enfield action that has been sporterized.

Nice rifle!! You have me looking forward to receiving mine!

I believe the 404 was introduced in 1905. 1909 was when they began using the magnum Mauser action which Rigby made available to other makers at that date. The serial number on my Jeffery Mauser below puts it at 1907. They removed the whole magazine box to fit the cartridges and let the timber stock act as the magazine box. On the standard Mauser action they make a nice light sporter that is a pleasure to carry around all day.

Just like this one which I believe has a similar '07 date if I remember correctly about when it was posted on another forum'

I have a great deal of 404 Jeffery information that a few of us compiled on another forum but have had it deleted when trying to post it here for the members

Witold,

Great looking rifle.

Thanks for sharing.

Clayton and Von Gruff,

Love seeing your Jeffery's.

Interesting but I too have a Jeffery in 404J made in 1907.

Info from the ledger page.

W.J.Jeffery
Caliber .404 Jeffery
Hair trigger
Mauser action
Horn cap
24" Krupp barrel
Sights from 100 to 500 yards (spring leaves)
Pistol grip with trap in heel
Scroll engraving
Sling eyes
Date of manufacture (completion) 18th June, 1907
Cost to manufacture £13-11-0 (thirteen pounds and eleven shillings)
Selling price £25-0-0 (twenty five pounds)

The Lyman peep seems to be aftermarket. The rifle evidently went to India originally. The name plate seems to be Indian. George Caswell thinks it probably made it back west in the 70's-80's but didn't know for sure.

What are the odds that three of us would have 404J made by Jeffery in 1907?

Von Gruff - I have seen and appreciate all the info you have compiled regarding the 404J. It is invaluable.

Witold - Beautiful rifle. Thanks for letting us all share our treasurers

Hello Clayton Holland.
We like the same calibers. Look at the pictures of my .275Rigby. Topic " ZKK600 Zbrojovka Brno .275Rigby /7 x 57 /. /Firearms, amunition & equipment - reloading /

For those who may like the information in the thread we complied shoot me a PM and I can link it to you.

If anyone wants this info I have found it extremely valuable. Von Gruff is certainly one of the experts regarding the 404J. We are fortunate to have his expertise here.(y)

All the best.

I reckon that rifle will do 'till something better comes along.

Until this guy posts something on pay it forward free I would avoid him at all costs.

If it hasn't sold by next week I might be interested. Stock would have to be changed along with some other items. I'm already having a 416 Rigby built so money is a tad bit tight.

Hey pal! I'll take all the .375 bullets if they're available.
Thanks!
