I am looking to book our flights for our May 2017 safari in Namibia. There is two of us and we would like to fly from Calgary to Frankfurt then direct to Windhoek without transitioning through Joburg. Any help from you guys on who to use would help this rookie out. We are looking for someone with experience with Canadian gun permits and associated paperwork. Thanks ! Rob.

Albertaguy ~ let us know if we can put together a quote for you. We do work with clients out of Canada.

Luftstansa has a flight from yyc to Windhoek that only stops in Frankfrut.

The Frankfurt Windhoek route is, by far, the best way to Namibia. You can get a day room at the Sheraton hotel on the airport for a shower and long nap before the overnight to Windhoek (and a good meal and pilsner or two). Most importantly, saves all the nonsense at Jo'burg.

Is it a Lufthansa flight from FRA to WDH?

I can only see Condor and Air Namibia flying into WDH directly.

I flew air Namibia from Frankfurt twice. Huge bleeding Airbus with good food and excellent wine in business.

Namibia gun permits are easy.Download and fill out in advance and present when you get there. Make sure you have your temporary export permit from Canada too. Last time we flew Air Namibia out of Frankfurt our plane engine caught on fire. It was an exciting landing back in Frankfurt. They shut the entire airport down for us and had dozens of emergency vehichles escort us in! Amazingly it only delayed us about 10 hours. On our next trip to Namibia we went through Jo'berg. It was way more economical.

What route/airlines did you use Red Leg? Obviously the FR to WH is Air namibia, but what about DFW Frankfurt? Is there 2 overnight flights instead of just one going the usual ATL=JB route? I've been wanting to try that anyway.

I did the Expedia thing and for 2 years in a row got YUL-->ATL-->JNB for $1100 Cdn. Can't beat that with a stick. Put in the hours searching and book early you will be rewarded

I flew United to Frankfurt (overnight), spent the day in Frankfurt, and then overnight to Windhoek on Air Namibia.

Trying to figure this one out.
The JNB route has one more permit and an over night hotel room for certain.
Perhaps you avoided a firearms baggage fee?
Was the Airfare was so much different?

So no one has a Canadian travel agent they have used? I emailed Lori at travel express but would also like to check with a Canada based agent to compare with.

There was a travel agent at one of the Africa Hunting events shows that was offering flights.
Carlson something or other, out of Toronto.

I am not sure they were really specialists in any way.

Flights were about $800 cheaper each through Jo'berg vs Frankfurt and there was no overnight in Jo'berg but we did overnight in Windhoek. We only had a 3 hour layover in Jo'berg. We had Air 2000 clear or guns so that was a couple hundred bucks but we still saved around $1400. This was a July hunt and apparently that was why the Frankfurt route was so expensive. The first time we went in April and the Frankfurt route was only a couple hundred bucks more. Reports on Air Namibia are pretty mixed these days.

We have a great travel agent in Calgary that understands traveling with guns but she does not handle any of the gun paperwork. She just ensures our flights are firearm friendly. To Namibia it really is super simple. If you are at all concerned, Air2000 does do gun clearing there now as well.

It was in Google flights

I find the travel planning is half the fun!

I have used Francoise Campbell and Mark Love at Custom Travel Solutions. They have an office in Calgary, but the people I deal with are in Canmore. They've organized about 5 trips to Africa for me, and they are organizing my trip to Ethiopia in the fall.

I have to tell you though, that I don't think there's a travel agent around who really understands travel with guns (at least in Canada). They will do as you ask - make sure it's on the file, etc., but I've never found one that knew what else was involved.

Having said that, it's pretty easy, although I understand that's easy to say when you've done it a few times.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Export Permits. You need export permits for the guns, ammo and scopes. There are thread on how to get this done. It's a bunch of paper to Ottawa, but it's pretty straightforward, and they are easy enough to deal with. Turnaround is a bit erratic, has been as short as a week for me, and as long as a month.

2. Import permits. Depends on your destination. Namibia is a one page form you fill out at the airport. Nothing done in advance. They don't even expect a bribe, from what I can tell. If you stop in South Africa and collect your luggage (you aren't checked through to Namibia) you will need an import permit from South Africa, and a visit to the Firearms Office at the Jo'burg airport. Not terribly difficult, but I have someone else take care of this for me - AfricaSky Guesthouse is who I use, but there are others. The police here don't exactly expect a bribe (at least the sign says that), but they sometimes seem to try to find something wrong with the paperwork, and then a reasonable gratuity seems to solve the problem. This doesn't happen when you use a service.

3. Transitting countries. From Calgary, you can really only go through Europe. DO NOT go through the US. While it might go smoothly, the consequences if it does not are too terrible to contemplate (can you spell felony?). So that leaves you pretty much with LHR, FRA and AMS. You need transit permits to go through Amsterdam, and these can be erratic, so I'd drop AMS. That leaves Frankfurt and London. I've done both. If the guns are checked all the way, you have no issues at all. There is nothing that needs to be done. Repeat after me: nothing. If you are trying to save money by flying into Gatwick or Stanstead and out of Heathrow, then you will have to hire a security company to transport the guns between airports, and paperwork will be involved. It's not worth it. Stick to one airport. Changing terminals is not an issue.

Hope this helps.
