I'm going to just spill it out. What could 10 -12K get me for a safari in Africa.

Nobody likes to talk money - that's the blasphemous part.

I think you know the impossible part. It can be in any country, length of time, animals hunted, etc etc etc. Hey, I admitted it was impossible!

    ^^^ What Bluey said....

Here's the deal, or it was for me. Figuring out the hunt cost itself is the easy part. It was everything else that overwhelmed me.

My first question to you is this - what do you plan on spending the $10-$12K on? Just the hunt? Airfare? Guns? Taxidermy? My wife knows what I'm going to spend (OK, she sorta knows....) on the hunt and airfare, but if she knew the rest of it she would choke. Heck, if I added it up I'd choke!!!

Here's a link that should help you as well. Enjoy the planning!!!!

That kind of money can get you quite a bit. Like Royal27 said it depends what you want to spend it on.

    rough numbers
    flight = $2000
    hunt = $6000 (plains game)
tip = $800 (they suggest 10% of the cost of the hunt, search what is a good tip in the forum)
Taxidermy = $3000 (depending on what your getting done)
    export - $1000

SO the way I figure it with my quick math, whatever you find for a hunt, you should double it, add a third again if your bringing someone else

I guess your questions are almost awnsered. Now you just need to deside what you want to do!!
    Countries, animals, days etc.

    Good luck on the planning

    Best Regards

That comment sent coffee into the keyboard!

Denial is always the key to an addiction.

Look in the Deals. There are plenty of suggestions within that budget.

12K just for the hunt can get you a lot of trophies.

The experience....ah, that is priceless !

Starting at 12k...minus $2k for the 16 hour plane ride...10k will get you one helluva fun plains game hunt in South Africa or Namibia. There are lots of good package deals out there, including trophy fees, with room left over for some add ons starting with that kind of dough.

Just keep in mind the quickest way to blow a budget is all the new stuff a person will buy before the safari. We tend to start to look at a new bow or rifle, binos or a rangefinder. $1000 dollars in new arrows and broadheads. You get the picture. The only good thing with that is you'll have something left over for your second trip!

HOLY SH!T $25,850 to shoot a well maned lion in South Africa? I never thought I was anywhere near poor, but you guys must be a lot wealthier than I!!

(I don't think I wanna know the cost to mount it)

    Hello Adam12,

Don't bog down on lion, unless you are wealthy, most of us will never be able to afford one (although a lioness permit can sometimes be located at an affordable price to us Working Class folk) .

Lion are sort of like gold bricks, we rarely get to even see one but when we do, it is impressive to look at, even though we know we can never afford to own it.

I've been to Africa 4 times, currently planning my 5th and I expect to croak without ever hunting lion.

It is OK because, I am very blessed to hunt other species in Africa as it is.

Most men are guilty of a wasted life (spent in front of a television and puttering with yard work, then occasionally going to a baseball game).

You obviously are not one of them and you can quietly revel in that.

Furthermore, the fact that you are going on a hunting trip to Africa is your #1 trophy.

If you don't try too hard to set tape measure records, and instead allow yourself to relax and absorb what the tradition of hunting in Africa is, it will change you.

Speak very much with PH references prior to selecting one, then consult your chosen PH in all things and your safari will more than likely be a pleasant success.

Lion or no lion, you will return to your home a different person.

    Regards,
    Velo Dog.

Very well said. Within that budget you can anyway do lioness and plainsgame.

Wild lion in good areas, with a high success rate can be anywhere from $ 60 - $ 90 000 US.

    So $ 25k is a good saving.

As for regular plains game 7 days 4 animals can be as low $ 3000 or 10 days with all the favourites up to $ 6 000.

It's all about choice, but the right choices can get you a great experience.
Best of luck and hunting regards
    Dave

    Great post!

I am planning for 3-4 more hunts to Africa myself and non of them include a lion.

    Hi Adam,
If your budget is simply for the hunt, you can do a lot of hunting with that budget. Are you looking for a plains game hunt or dangerous game? Will you please send me a PM with details, as I am currently on safari, so that I can put something together for you. You might be surprised at what is reachable. ;)

    Take Care,
    Marius Goosen
