WHITE RIVER – Monday a man was arrested at Numbi Trust near Masoyi when a rhino horn was apparently found in his possession.
This follows the apprehension of two men and a woman on Thursday after they were allegedly about to bring a firearm into the Kruger National Park (KNP) for the purpose of poaching rhinos.
The suspect (20) will be charged with the illegal possession of rhino horn and is expected to appear in the Masoyi Periodic Court tomorrow.
Last week Ms Mavis Chauke (25), Ms Nancy Mkhari (21) and Mr Jafta Xhsidzenge (20) were arrested thanks to an anonymous tip-off. Hawks spokesman, Lt Robert Netshiunda, confirmed the Hawks had been informed that a group of people had been plotting to poach rhinos in the KNP.
Security officials at all the gates were alerted and the vehicle in which the three had been travelling, was stopped at the park’s Numbi Gate.
Officials searched the car and allegedly found a .375 hunting rifle in its engine compartment. Ammunition and a silencer were reportedly hidden in the boot.
Netshiunda said the three’s apparent intention had been to drop the firearm off inside the KNP where poachers, already inside the park, would collect it.
Their appearance on Friday was brief and the case was remanded to today, when they will appear in the Skukuza Magistrate’s Court. All three remain in custody.
