    Hunting Benin Information

    Hunting Benin
Benin, was formerly known as the "Dahomey" under the French Colonial Empire. Benin, with a long tradition of hunting, is located on the west coast of Africa. Benin borders Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger and Nigeria. Like its neighboring Burkina Faso, Benin is one of the safest countries on the African continent where hunting and tourism thrive thanks to continued peace and a secure economy. This stability has enabled Benin to become a major destination for big game hunting in West Africa.

Hunting and wildlife of Benin do not differ from those of Burkina Faso. Benin is home to a dense animal population including many rare and highly regarded species such as the Western Roan Antelope (Hippotragus Equinus), one of the most beautiful antelope in West Africa. West African Savannah Buffalo, (Syncerus Caffer Aequinoctialis) one of the major hunting attractions in the country, are found in large numbers, and stalking these "Little Buffalo" is often very exciting. Lion hunting in Benin is also an exciting endeavor as Lion are hunted only by tracking, not with bait as in Eastern and Southern Africa.

Benin is home to many species of antelope including Western Hartebeest (Alcelaphus Buselaphus), Defassa Waterbuck (Kobus Ellipsiprymnus Defassa), Buffon's or Western Kob (Kobus Kob), Bohor or Nagor Reedbuck (Redunca Redunca), Harnessed Busbuck (Tragelaphus Scriptus Knutsoni), Oribi (Ourebia Ourebi) and Common Duiker (Cephalophus Grimmia) and Warthog (Phacochoerus aethiopicus). Although there is a sizable population of Elephant in Benin, they are not legal to hunt, nor is the Leopard. All the aforementioned species are found in most of the recognized hunting areas.

    Hunting Botswana Information

    Hunting in Botswana
Botswana is located in Southern Africa. A landlocked country, Botswana borders Namibia to the West, Zambia to the North, Zimbabwe to the Northeast and South African Republic to the South. This former British protectorate gained its independence in 1966.

It was not until 1962 that sport hunting started to catch on in Botswana once hunting outfitters from East Africa established themselves for hunting in Botswana. These well connected hunting outfitters from East Africa partnered with local hunting outfitters in Botswana and in only a few short years, it became one of the finest hunting destinations in Africa.

There are two major hunting areas in Botswana, the Okavango Delta and the central region of Kalahari (the Central Kalahari Game Reserve).

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world. It is undeniably a paradise on earth. The unique habitat is so rich in vegetation and water, it is home to a very diverse animal population. Thousands of Elephants, considerable herds of Cape Buffalo (Syncerus Caffer Caffer), Crocodiles, Hippos, Lions and Leopards are all found in this region. The Okavango Delta is also home to the unique Red Lechwe (Kobus Leche Leche) and an incredible variety of birds.

The central region of the Kalahari (Central Kalahari Game Reserve) allows the hunting of some of the largest and most beautiful antelopes in Africa such as the Gemsbok (Oryx Gazella), Cape Eland (Taurotragus Oryx) and Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus Strepsiceros). There are also Lions and Leopards which are hunted with dogs and Bushmen trackers. Elephants are also present in large numbers and can be hunted.

Unfortunately, many species have been closed to hunting in Botswana for many years and it seems unlikely that licenses for these species will be granted ...

Burkina Faso has become one of the principal destinations for small and big game hunting in West Africa.

Burkina Faso is home to a dense animal population including many rare and prestigious species such as the Western Roan Antelope (Hippotragus Equinus), one of the most beautiful and biggest antelope in West Africa. West African Savannah Buffalo, (Syncerus Caffer Aequinoctialis) one of the major hunting attractions in the country, are found in large numbers, and stalking these "Little Buffalo" is often very exciting. Hunting Cameroon
Cameroon is also referred to as "Little Africa" due to its' diversity of habitat; rain forest, forest glades with savannah and savannah with bush veld. Cameroon, like Central African Republic and Tanzania, is a historically significant hunting destination in Africa.

For many decades, French professional hunters, as well as some Italian, Spanish and Belgian professional hunters, led amazing safaris in Cameroon. Contributing to Cameroons' reputation as a prestigious big game hunting country of the former Afrique Equatoriale Fran霆喫se (French Equatorial Africa). Today, Cameroon remains one of the most beautiful destinations to hunt in Africa.

The political stability of the country assures Cameroon's reputation as an ideal destination for both hunting and tourism. Due to the French colonial influence many Europeans view Cameroon, as well as Burkina Faso and Benin, as perfect first safari destinations. All hunters are certain to discover the ancient atmosphere of Africa while experiencing the thrill of an authentic fair chase African hunt.

There are two major hunting regions in Cameroon, the North and the South/Southeast.

The northern terrain consists mostly of savannah with some lightly wooded areas and some dense forest. Hunting in northern Cameroon is famous for one of its most sought after species, the Lord Derby Eland (Tragelaphus Eurycerus Eurycerus). Hunting Central African Republic Information

    Hunting Central African Republic
Hunters around the world have discovered what European big game hunters have long known: that Central African Republic, also known as C.A.R., is a legendary hunting destination. Central African Republic is to West and Central Africa what Tanzania and Zimbabwe are to East Africa. Over the years, Central African Republic has seen a number of political upheavals however hunting has continued on. Today, the presence of the French army provides this former French colony stability and peace.

The diversity of game in C.A.R. is remarkable, 208 species of mammals are present, and among them are 23 species of antelope. This diversity, and high population densities, makes the Central African Republic one of the most interesting destinations of big game hunting in Africa. But among all these species present in Central African Republic, three of them are particularly well known. They are the Giant or Lord Derby Eland (Taurotragus Derbianus) named by the Africans "the ghost antelope", the Bongo (Tragelaphus Eurycerus Eurycerus) and the Greater Kudu of Western Africa (Tragelaphus Strepsiceros).

The largest trophies of Lord Derby Eland existing to date have been harvested in Central African Republic, and the hunting of the largest antelope in Africa is an unpredictable adventure, which demands patience and tenacity. Bongo has also greatly contributed to the reputation of the Central African Republic, and hunting of this magnificent antelope in the deep forests or in natural places where salt is found is also an opportunity for an unforgettable experience. The Greater Kudu of Western Africa, one of the most beautiful trophies of Africa, is hunted in the north of the ...

    Hunting Ethiopia Information

    Hunting Ethiopia
Ethiopia covers a large portion of the Horn of Africa and shares borders with Sudan, Kenya, Somalia and Djibouti. For decades Ethiopia has been a legendary hunting destination, especially famous for its Elephants. It is also the only country in which one can find the Moutain Nyala as well as hunt the iconic Bongo or Markhor which are as beautiful and exciting as they are challenging.

Despite numerous political crisis and wars waged in the last twenty years, Ethiopia, unlike its neighbor Somalia, offers unique hunting possibilities in exciting and fascinating geographical regions.

Ethiopia has been celebrated by such famous writers as Raimbaud, Henry de Montfreid and Fran霈殃s Guyot and it is useful to read the works of these authors before beginning a journey to this country. Even though these books have been written decades ago, they enable today's hunter to more fully experience the atmosphere of this beautiful country.

In addition to the magnificent Mountain Nyala (Tragelaphus Buxtoni), Ethiopia is home to a varied wildlife spread out over different regions in the country that include the following, the Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus Strepsiceros), Lesser Kudu (Tragelaphus Imberbis), Beisa Oryx (Oryx Gazella Beisa), Nile Buffalo (Syncerus Caffer Aequinoxialis), Neumann's Hartebeest (Alcelaphus Buselaphus Lelwel), Defassa Waterbuck (Kobus Defassa), Harnessed Bushbuck (Tragelaphus Scriptus), Gerenuk (Litocranius Walleri), Bohor Reedbuck (Redunca Redunca), Grant's Gazelle (Gazella Grantii), Soemmering's Gazelle (Gazella Soemmeringi), Oribi (Ourebia Ourebi), Klipspringer (Oreotragus Oreotragus), Kirk Dik-Dik (Madoqua Kirki), Gunther's Dik-Dik (Madoqua Guentheri Smithi), Giant Forest Hog (Hylochoerus Meinertzhagenii), Bushpig (Potamochoerus Porcus), Warthog ...

    Hunting Mozambique Information

    Hunting Mozambique
It's been 500 years since the first Europeans arrived in Mozambique. In 1498, six years after the discovery of America, the Portuguese landed in Mozambique and remained there for the ensuing half-millennium until granting Mozambique its independence in 1975. For two decades following independence this poor country experienced an often brutal civil war between two rival factions, one supported by Western interests, the other by Communist interests. Since the end of that war in 1992, Mozambique has been striving to once again become the great hunting destination it once was.

Mozambique is located on the Indian Ocean, and faces the island of Madagascar. It is bordered by Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Swaziland. In Mozambique the hunting areas comprise a large portion of the entire country. One of the hunting regions found near Beira (pronounced bay-ra), the second largest city, located in central Mozambique. The other hunting areas are found to the north and west, toward Tanzania and Zimbabwe, near the borders of these neighboring countries.

The hunting areas near Beira were those most hard hit by the civil war and today bear the scars of the turmoil. Poaching was particularly rampant in this region during the war and the animal populations suffered enormously. In these areas, animal densities are very uneven, especially in comparison with most other African countries. The habitat consists of green savannah, forest glades and dense forests in which hunting is very difficult.

The best hunting in Mozambique is found in the more remote areas, especially in the north near Tanzania and in the west, not far from Zimbabwe. These major hunting countries and the neighboring reserves or parks, such as Nyasa, ensure ...

    Hunting Namibia Information

    Hunting Namibia
Namibia, formerly known as South West Africa, has a rich and interesting history. At one time the British Empire took partial possession of Namibia and later the Germans colonized the country until the First World War. Namibia was then placed under the administrative rule of South Africa and was finally granted independence on March 21, 1990.

Since independence, Namibia has benefited from great political stability. It is an easy, safe and affordable hunting destination for a great plains game hunting safari up to a high end big five hunting safari. This is why it is so popular amongst hunters, second only to South Africa in the numbers of hunters who visit annually, averaging more than 5,000 international hunters per year. Namibia has become a favorite amongst first time hunters, family groups of hunters as well as long time African hunting veterans who appreciate the benefits of hunting in Namibia.

Hunting properties range in size from private land of a few thousand acres to million acre hunting concessions where hunters can discover a country and its wildlife that are among the most beautiful, varied and rich that Africa has to offer. The hunting areas are spread throughout the country from north to south. In the vast majority of the cases, these are private areas managed by their individual owners or hunting companies.

The majority of the hunting in Namibia takes place on private game ranches which are found throughout the country. Safari hunting is allowed on private game ranches, conservancies where hunting is permitted and within government hunting concession areas which are only found in the North of the country.

In Namibia, the habitat of the hunting areas is composed of dense thorny savanna, shrub savanna and large semi-desert plains. The terrain in some hunting areas can be challenging, even mountainous. The elevation of the high plains in much of the country where many of the prime hunting areas are located can also cause hunting to be more strenuous for those who are not used to it.

Namibia along with South Africa are the only two countries in Africa where one can hunt the entire big five; Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhino (White as well as Black Rhinoceros). Most of the plains game hunting safaris, along ...

    Hunting South Africa Information

    Hunting South Africa
South Africa shares a special place in the hearts and minds of many hunters and non-hunters alike. In addition to the world famous Kruger National Park, South Africa is home to nearly 150 other national parks and reserves including those dedicated to nature, marine life, forestry, botany as well as other unique interests. For decades these parks have welcomed millions of visitors each year. The film and television industries have produced hundreds of movies and documentaries on African wildlife which have often been filmed within the parks and reserves of South Africa. All the above has done well to promote South Africa as a kind of Eden where it's possible to tour comfortably in a 4x4 amid abundant and exotic wildlife, to be able to safely watch predators as they dine on their prey, to observe the big cats in the tall grass or to follow the migration of herbivores...

South Africa has long been the most popular hunting destination in Africa especially as a first time hunting safari destination. Well over 6,000 international hunters visit annually for plains game and big game hunting on the more than 9,000 registered game ranches in South Africa. Hunting properties range in size from a few thousand to over 250,000 acres where hunters can discover a country and its wildlife that are among the most beautiful and richest that Africa has to offer.

Safari hunting is available on private game ranches and within controlled hunting areas in some provincial game reserves. Much of the hunting in South Africa takes place on enclosed private land. The amount of game on private land is estimated to be two and a half times greater than the game populations found on public lands.

There are nine provinces in South Africa. However more than half of the most popular plains game species are taken in just two provinces, the Limpopo and Eastern Cape. The species taken in these provinces that top the list are Impala (Aepyceros Melampus), Warthog (Phacochoerus Aethiopicus), Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus Strepsiceros), Blesbok (Damaliscus), Gemsbok (Oryx Gazella), Blue Wildebeest (Connochaetes Taurinus), Burchell's Zebra (Equus Quagga Burchellii), Black Wildebeest (Conochaetes Gnou), Southern Bushbuck (Tragelaphus Scriptus Sylvaticus), Common Waterbuck (Kobus Ellipsiprymnus) and Springbok (Antidorca Marsupialis) predominantly in Eastern Cape province.

While hunting in South Africa one can take the big five; Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhino. The big five species are dispersed all over South Africa with most being ...

    Hunting Tanzania Information

    Hunting Tanzania
Of all the African hunting countries, Tanzania is without a doubt the one that most stimulates the imagination of hunters and non hunters alike. This former German colony once known as Tanganyika became an English territory after the First World War. In 1964, along with new found independence, its' name was changed to Tanzania.

The greatest hunters of the twentieth century have celebrated Tanzania, its wildlife and its hunting, as being among the most abundant on the African continent. The most famous of these great hunters include President Theodore Roosevelt whose safari in 1905 required nearly 300 porters, and Frederick Selous, arguably one of the greatest white hunters of all time, who at over sixty years of age lost his life in 1917 while fighting for the Africa he loved so well against the German Army. As for literature and film, they too hold a special place for Tanzania, not the least of which are Hemingway's novels...

Tanzania has long been considered the ultimate hunting safari destination in Africa. Fulfilling the dream of a traditional big game hunting safari, the likes of which so many hunters have read about, continues to be a big draw to Tanzania unspoiled wilderness.

Tanzania enjoys a beautiful coastline along the Indian Ocean and shares borders with Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, Zambia and Malawi to the southwest and Mozambique to the south.

Tanzania is home to a wide range of African wildlife and still allows the hunting of four of the famous Big Five species; Elephant, Lion, Buffalo (Syncerus Caffer Caffer) and Leopard. And it's no wonder with over 40 species to hunt, including some of the best big game hunting found in Africa.

The wildlife of Tanzania includes an enormous variety of potential hunting trophies such as Cape Eland (Taurotragus Oryx), Roan Antelope (Hippotragus Equinus), Roosevelt Sable (Hippotragus Niger Roosevelti), Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus Strepsiceros), Lesser kudu (Tragelaphus Imberbis), Coke's Hartebeest ...

    Hunting Zambia Information

    Hunting Zambia
The history of Zambia is closely linked with that of its neighbor, Zimbabwe (formerly known as Rhodesia). In 1953 the British government created the Federation of Rhodesia Nyasaland consisting of Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia (modern day Zambia) and the Nyasaland (modern day Malawi).

In 1959, Kenneth Kaunda founded the party of the United National Independence and unleashed a campaign of civil disobedience, the result of which caused the British to end its "Greater Rhodesia" endeavor. The Federation was dissolved and Zambia gained its independence in 1964.

The history of modern big game hunting in Zambia is a short one. Zambia only opened for sport hunting in the 1970's while simultaneously creating GMA's (Game Management Areas). In 2001 the Zambian government revoked all licenses previously granted to the safari companies and all hunting stopped. The government then reversed its decision in 2003, hunting licenses were again granted and hunting resumed after a redistribution of the hunting concessions.

Zambia is among those African countries without access to the sea. It is bordered to the south by Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Namibia, to the west by Angola, to the north by the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania and to the east by Malawi.

The vegetation of Zambia consists mostly of Miombo, a kind of glade-forest of trees of various species. In the extreme southern regions there are also some mopane (Colophospermum mopane) forests, one of the more common trees of southern Africa. The mopane wood is one of hardest and heaviest and therefore the most difficult to work with. Zambia also has large areas of grassy savannas as is found in most African countries. Zambia is essentially a high plateau with an average altitude of 3,200 to 4,200 feet (1,000 to 1,300 meters).

In Zambia hunting is permitted in three different types of areas; Game Management Areas, private hunting areas and conservancies. The sum of these areas covers over 6.5 million acres. Most of the hunting areas, the majority of which are GMA (Game Management Areas), are located in the Luangwa valley or in the Kafue plateau region. The others are spread out over the plains of ...

    Hunting Zimbabwe Information

    Hunting Zimbabwe
Given the prevailing political, economic and human rights situation in this country, as a hunter or traveler, one may be tempted to avoid Zimbabwe altogether.

This country, formerly known as Rhodesia, was once one of the most prosperous countries in Africa while under rule of the British Empire. After gaining its independence and, even more so under the rule of Robert Mugabe, this prosperity has come to an abrupt end.

In the last ten years, the policies enacted by Robert Mugabe against white Zimbabweans, including the redistribution of agricultural land, have brought on a rapid and devastating economic collapse. As a result, famine has become a driving force among the Zimbabweans and has led to significant poaching. According to some sources, these activities have led to the disappearance of 70 to 80% of the game in some areas.

Surprisingly, tourists and hunters continue to visit Zimbabwe. To date, there have been no incidents involving foreign tourist or foreign hunters. In addition, most of the safari operators continue to offer hunts in Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe continues to be an important hunting destination.

The current situation will not last forever and the continued presence in the bush and in the hunting areas of the hunting structures such as the: camps, lodges, vehicles, and more, as well as the presence of hunters, PH's, trackers, game scouts, etc... all may help to slow the effects of poaching... even though for many of these poachers, poaching is a matter of survival.

It is likely that one day soon Zimbabwe will again be the peaceful and beautiful hunting destination that it had been for decades though this return to normalcy may take several years.

Zimbabwe, as is the case for other countries in Africa, has no access to the sea. Zimbabwe is bordered to the east by Mozambique, to the south by the Republic of South Africa, to the west by Botswana, and to the north by Zambia.

Zimbabwe is home to an Elephant population estimated at 100,000 animals, with a threshold at 50,000, mostly in the Zambezi Valley. Hunting of Elephants is allowed.

Lion and Leopard hunting are also allowed. Lions and Leopards are hunted exclusively with bait and can be found in almost all areas. Zimbabwean Leopards are well known for their size. It is worth mentioning that among the cats, Cheetah hunting is also permitted.

There are also large herds of Buffalo (Syncerus Caffer Caffer) in Zimbabwe and so this country offers the possibility to hunt four of the renowned "Big Five"...

Zimbabwe is also home to a ...
