    How To Measure Your Trophies

When it comes to measuring trophy size, there are primarily two well known and recognized organizations that each have their own methods of measuring trophies. Both the Safari Club International (SCI) and the Roland Ward (RW) catalog and register trophy entries into their own record books.

You will find links below for both the Safari Club ...

    Judging Blue Wildebeest

Excerpt from a post in the AfricaHunting.com Forum, to read the full thread click here.

The Blue Wildebeest is certainly one of Africa's most well known and popular trophies for many sport hunters.

When giving Blue Wildebeest horn measurement here, I refer to horn length for a Blue Wildebeest which is taking the measurement of the outside spread of the horns from the tip of one horn moving down the outside of that horn following along the curl and up to the base then continue straight across the forehead and follow the same path all the way up to the tip of the second horn (see picture below). This is the method used by the SCI, for more information on How To Measure Your Trophies you can read AfricaHunting.com article by clicking here.

    Judging Cape Buffalo
by Ryan Shallom, Wild Footprints Limited, Tanzania

Excerpt from a post in the AfricaHunting.com Forum, to read the full thread click here.

I have guided and hunted over 500 Buffalo in Tanzania and confirm that each trophy is unique. I was brought up hunting old animals and from a very early age have instinctively judged every animal on wear & tear before judging size. Nothing like taking an old animal and working for it. They rarely come easy and as the saying goes - its the clever ones that grow old.

A good buff is an old buff - no two ways about it! A professional hunter should easily judge this from ...

    Judging Eland

Excerpt from a post in the AfricaHunting.com Forum, to read the full thread click here.

The Eland is the largest species of antelope in Africa and one of its' most sought after spiral horned trophies. Additionally these immense animals are often hard earned trophies for sport hunters which makes it that much more close to the heart of many who have hunted them.

For the sake of this post I am referring to Common Eland, but the criteria here applies equally well to the subspecies that fall under the category of Common Eland which are Cape Eland, Livingstone Eland and East African Eland.

    Judging Greater Kudu

Excerpt from a post in the AfricaHunting.com Forum, to read the full thread click here.

The Greater Kudu is definitely one of Africa's most sought after trophies and has become the ultimate plains game trophy for many sport hunters.

When discussing Greater Kudu horn measurement here, I refer to horn length for a Kudu in it's simplest form which is taking the measurement of the longest horn from the base along the spiral ridge to the tip only. This, of course, is an easy method but for a primer on How To Measure Your Trophies you can read AfricaHunting article by clicking here.

    Judging Warthog

Excerpt from a post in the AfricaHunting.com Forum, to read the full thread click here.

    01. One of my favorite road signs.

When discussing Warthog tusk measurement here I refer to tusk length for a Warthog in it's simplest form which is taking the measurement of the longest upper tusk starting from the base, which is found inside the facial bone, along the outside of the tusk to the tip only. Even though Warthogs have two sets of tusks, the upper and lower, only the larger upper tusks are measured for official measurement purposes, as the lower teeth are hard to see or evaluate in the field. This, of course, is a basic method but for a primer on How To Measure Your Trophies you can read AfricaHunting ...

    Judging Zebra

Excerpt from a post in the AfricaHunting.com Forum, to read the full thread click here.

Although Zebra species are not scored for either the Safari Club International (SCI) Record Book of Trophy Animals nor for the Rowland Ward Records of Big Game Book, they are still regularly hunted by trophy hunters. The reason the Zebra is hunted is for their skin as a trophy or as bait for hunting Leopard and/or Lion.

The name "zebra" comes from an old Portuguese word which means "wild ass". Zebras are African equids best known for their distinctive white and black stripes. Their stripes come in different patterns unique to each individual like a fingerprint, no two are alike. Zebras are actually black or dark animals with white stripes. Although seemingly improbable the stripes of a Zebra act as a camouflage mechanism. Anyone who has observed Zebra in ...
