    Hyena hunting

Hi BRICKBURN, I have been a PH in KZN for some 13 years now and, to my knowledge, there is absolutely no problem with using calls for hunting. Malcolm Thomson

    Hyena hunting

Spotted Hyena are not the easiest to hunt - clever and cunning! See below 2 photos of a single animal which is regularly visiting some of our bow blinds late at night. Malcolm Thomson

2014 Bow hunt in SA... What time period?

All who have commented have given you very good advice! Well done. In our experience June, July & August are good months to bow hunt from blinds, with July and August probably the best (much drier) with hides being much more active. Definately pick a dark moon phase, you won't regret it...

Elephant Pictures - The Magnificent SEVEN - Big Tusker Elephants

Hi Wheels, Yep, it is rare to see two big bulls like this together. Not sure where one would still see this today (Except Tembe Elephant Park!). There are probably in the region of 10 bulls there that are 100lb +, and quite a few in the 70-90lb range. While I was working there I had the...

Elephant Pictures - The Magnificent SEVEN - Big Tusker Elephants

These are great Tuskers, but we do still have some good ones out there. The below picture was taken by a friend of mine (Dr. Wayne Matthews) who was the Ecologist in Tembe Elephant Park in Kwazulu-Natal for many years (I also had the privilage of working there for 5 years). The elephant bull in...

What weight broadhead do you normally use for hunting/hunting africa?

I use 125gr broadheads for normal plains game. I have up to now been using Nitron, but am moving over to Slick Trick (Standard or Magnum) which look to be very effective (again 125gr). These are 4 bladed over the the 3 blades of the Nitron. For thicker skinned game (Buffalo, Giraffe, etc), I...

The Hunter and Society's 'Conservation' Ethos

Hi Uncle Ron, Long time no hear. Well done, makes a lot of sense! The sustainable use of our natural resources, particularly in South Africa, is the reason why our game populations have increased so dramatically in recent times and why the wildlife industry is doing so well ("if it pays, it...

    Hunting and Conservation

Hi Bobpuckett, Hunting & Conservation go hand in hand. I worked for many years in the formal conservation sector in South Africa, and also still as a PH and avid rifle and bow hunter. The reason why there is now so much game in South Africa in particular, is becuase wildlife now has value. The...

    Rhino Poaching

Rhino poaching has become a major and critical issue, which the powers that be will have to tackle head on. They will need to look at legislation and allocating the required resources to protect the rhino on the ground and to prosecute those committing the crime. I am not sure what statistics...

    How important is moon phase?

This is an interesting topic, with a few different views. I can confidently say, as some of the other African Outfitters have mentioned in this thread, that in Africa bow hunting during the full moon definately decreases your chances. We have learned through experience that game is far more...

A Proud Father - Bow Hunting's Role in My Son's Road to Recovery!

You may recall that in 2010 I posted a thread on my Son's first bow hunt, where he bagged himself 2 animals from a pit blind within 10 minutes. The photo posted at the time is shown here. Since then he has been thoroughly hooked on Bow Hunting. On the 7th December 2011 he was involved in a...
