    Confusing USMC Orders...

Foxhole Decision Time President Obama signed the bill that allows gays to serve openly in the Military. No more don't ask don't tell. But what he has really done is cause confusion in the ranks that could easily cost Marine lives. This is what can now happen...

    safari clothing

I hope someone can help... Years ago, I purchased several shirts for a trip - they were extremely lightweght with tabs for the sleeves when rolled, and cartridge loops. I cannot find anything similar. All are too heavy, or the wrong material for sweat to dissipate. Can anyone help? A source...

Are Nyala or Bushbuck hunted from hides?

I've pretty much figured spot and stalk is my best bet for both. I've heard that the upper cape is a great stalking place due to terrain, etc. Either way, I want both, even if I have to rifle them (gag). Hey, it's probably my last trip and I've got a wall to fill at the new house.

Are Nyala or Bushbuck hunted from hides?

Good to hear... I've never brought any trophies back, and think it would be very nice to bring home this time a sort of mini spiral slam of Kudu, Nyala, and Bushbuck. Look good in the new house.

Are Nyala or Bushbuck hunted from hides?

Good luck to you, make sure you post after. Part of the reason I asked is that I understand Bushbuck are a tough go with a rifle too. As this willl very likely be my last trip due to health concers, I need to make the most of it. I really want one, and I really do not want to rifle one if I...

Are Nyala or Bushbuck hunted from hides?

I've heard / read somewhere that Bushbuck are frequently hunted from portables along trails. I'm a fairly good crawler, it's how I prefer whitetail hunting -but these two are new to me. BTW, it'll be on the eastern cape.

Are Nyala or Bushbuck hunted from hides?

Are either Nyala or Bushbuck hunted from blinds / hides, or are they strictly spot and stalk?

You know fellas, we're all over the map here... I suppose the only thing I will rely on in this trip is to "Go with my gut" Last trip over I had a very bad experience - staff and trackers were given a good tip, PH got zip. It was all he deserved for what he did.(didn't) do. Everyone else gave...

    Tipping Guide

Oh, PLEASE guys.... Here's the deal. Last time I was in RSA, as Bob said, I was left in a hide. The PH was within shouting distance. If I shot, he was there in minutes. I resent strongly the implication that any "drives" were in place. MY hunts are strictly fair chase, I wouldn't be there...

    Tipping Guide

Unless I missed it somehow, I have an interesting question.... If you are bowhunting over a waterhole, and basically being dropped off and picked up at the end of the day, should the tip for the PH reflect this? I don't quite know what they do all day - take care of another hunter...

How To Decide Which 1ST Time Outfitter?

Good points here - unfortunately I think there is a much bigger problem finding a good trip in the US. Lots of fly-by-night operators here. Many states have no requirement for licensing as a guide - anyone who can place an ad becomes a "Guide". I've heard stories ranging from no-shows after...

How To Decide Which 1ST Time Outfitter?

All good advice guys... Just to be clear, this is not my first rodeo. However, I do agonize over this question every trip I take, especially to a new country. So many seemingly excellent choices. I started this thread thinking it might help 1st timers greatly - and I think it has.

How To Decide Which 1ST Time Outfitter?

Seems to be a lot like me here looking to book for a hunt. Thee's a LOT of outfitters who offer a good deal, and are generally thought well of. Question is: What kicked you make the final choice for your first outfitter? Price? Referals? "Gut feelings" after communications?

Can i hunt deer with 35 lb primitive bow?

With all deference to 35, speed is not the sole issue with traditional archery. Most trad bows, whether truly primative or laminated will fall far short of the speed the guys shooting training wheels get. What you want is momentum. Heavy arrows - heavy heads (within reason). There has been...

    Dangerous Game Hunt Price Trend?

Enysse, I'm with you on the free range stuff... Granted, there are some huge ranches where you'll rarely if ever see a fence, and it's true you can get stomped on either side of the wire. But I certainly do not want to "hunt" a buffalo that has a name and sits in a pasture most of his life.

505Ed, Thanks for the input. Louis PM'd me and made me a very nice offer. I suppose now is as good a time as any - it will not get any better soon. Dangerous Game Hunt Price Trend?

Nothing ever gets any easier, does it? It's a tough call when one is on a tight budget. Take a major loan in order to grab a DG hunt before they are completely beyond one's means, or just forget it. I'm afraid it looks like due to supply and demand - with plenty of people willing (and able) to...

    Dangerous Game Hunt Price Trend?

    Hot 45/70 loads?

I knew that the the "New" sharps are made with stronger materials. Even within those parameters, the highest recommended loads aren't fun to shoot - they flat out hurt!

    Hot 45/70 loads?

Okay folks, here's what I got from C. Sharps. Make of it what you will... "Buffalo Bore makes 45-70 loads to several different pressures. We recommend using loads in the 28,000 to 30,000cup range which is about everything you can buy off the shelf. Some of the "magnum" 45-70 loads are...

    Hot 45/70 loads?

Gotcha.... While I have shot some of the commercial "hot" loads from mine, I certainly wouldn't want to loosen it up by exceeding it's specs. After all, I DID buy a 45/70, not a Weatherby. Thanks for the info.

    Hot 45/70 loads?

Not being a reloader or gunsmith, can you explain the above reference that even a modern sharps cannot handle the pressure? It would seem to me that the relatively massive barrels and monoblock type action would be plenty strong?

Lately I've been in contact with Jerome from Ozondjahe Safaris. Sounds like it's the place for me and my longbow. Now the fun begins. I find hashing out the details amost as much fun as the hunt. Is nine months ahead too early to begin packing?

Bluey - I'm going to have a shirt made of that "Left a piece of myself" line... I believe everyone who's been knows the feeling upon arriving home. I too was awed by the sunrises / sunsets. Capstick wrote "The sun doesn't set in the equatorial regions, it positively plummets".

For me, Grammar school teacher was from SA. She'd skip the book larnin' for stories of growing up there. Decided early on that I just had to arrow a zebra - epitome of African game for me at the time. Bottom line... Forget who said it, or where I read it - Africa is a woman. Too much is...
