    Size of Concession

Too small. If you're there for a few days it's way too small. I made the mistake of hunting smaller concessions in RSA before finally visiting a very large hunting area in Namibia. All I can say is that the places in RSA then felt very, very lame by comparrison. I'd never do it again. In fact...

    Killing your dream animal?

We're all individuals, we travel to Africa for our own reasons. Some are true hunters who'll only hunt animals in their native range, free chase. Others are 'bone collectors'. Pros and cons to all reasons. Those hunting captive bred sable or even lion in RSA are deluding themselves if they...

Man Eating Crocodile - WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT

Sink in? Philip, not only am I hunter, I'm involved with race horses, angling, and own a pet related business. In every instance there I've come across those opposed to those hobbies / industries. I could probably write a book on the exploits of antis. I've also been involved in fighting them...

Man Eating Crocodile - WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT

No. My comments are simply pointing out that crocs regulate their own populations to a degree by being cannibalistic. If you remove the largest animals then you end up with an increased population. This has been seen here at home where some trout fisheries removed the large pike. A species...

    Killing your dream animal?

I know what you mean. A guy I know is both a PH and a South African game rancher. I've stayed at his place a couple of times where he has sable amongst other species. These were younger animals being grown on for release on concessions. I managed to walk quite close to a couple of these because...

    Killing your dream animal?

I always feel a sense of sadness for the animals I've just killed. If that ever stops then I'll give up hunting completely. No problems hunting my dream animal, but there are a few species I wouldn't hunt for various reasons. This is just a personal choice and I don't disprove of anyone else...

Man Eating Crocodile - WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT

But if you take out the big ones then there won't be tons of baby ones being eaten! Are you sure that would not increase the population? ;) I can tell you for sure though that one person is not eaten every second as suggested further up the thread though! That would be 31,536,000 people per annum!

Man Eating Crocodile - WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT

If you target the big crocs that eat the little guys you'll end up with a population explosion in the future! Seen the same thing happen here in the UK when people used to think it was a good idea to remove large pike from trout fisheries. The truth was, the big pike regulated the population as...

    Where to go?

Joker2400 I feel your pain. There are three of us trying to deicde where we will go in 2016. It's also either RSA, Bots or Namibia, so much to consider! It's true the Eastern Cape kudu are noticably smaller than those north. Botswana regularly sees many monster kudu so that would be worth a...

    UK hunters considering North America

@ JimP Totally understand that. Though I can totally see why so many Americans head out to Africa too. Interestingly prices in RSA are increasing with some species as there appears to be a game ranching boom going on at the minute. It will be interesting to see what happens there.

    UK hunters considering North America

Brickburn, that's fantastic information, thank you. I'll make a start. On the price front, for comparison purposes, in 2014 I hunted in the Eastern Cape on a 14 animal package which consisted of 8 nights, 7 days hunting for :- 2 x Blesbok 2 x Springbok 2 x Impala 4 x warthog 2 x duiker 1 x...

    UK hunters considering North America

I appreciate that there is a very similar thread running at the moment, but I'm also considering hunting the US or Canada and wanted to personalise the thread a little more and not take the other thread off track as it would not be fair to the OP. But I'm also from the UK and would like to hunt...

    Bushbuck Pictures

Took this old buck two days ago. The horns are not particularly long, but quite thick, just like his neck. There's something about bushbuck that appeals to me. I don't think I'll ever become bored hunting these.

Going to South Africa from UK

It is an issue for UK hunters caused by South Africa. It is the South African's insisting on the permit. As far as I know it has zero affect on anyone else, just the brits who are affected by this.

    Bushpig Pictures

It seems a long time ago that I posted on this thread. I've just returned from South Africa and bushpig was top of my list. We spent two nights over bait (a large gut and head pile) in the cold but nothing appeared, despite the land owner who just happens to be a taxidermist stating that his...

Thanks for posting. This is my very recent experience... My friend read about these changes in a BASC magazine around three months ago and so emailed the above address. He was posted the permit. South African temporary export permit

What do you think of Tiger and Jaguar being hunted in South Africa?

Personally I find it very sad that these two species are offered. Hunting is already under pressure from anti types, and this kind of canned shooting (I refuse to call it hunting) will only give antis more ammunition to fire at us. It certainly isn't for me. Hunting antelope etc in their native...

SA PH's and Outitters- How does the game breeding affect your hunting business?

I talked to an agent earlier this week. He recently started investing in game animals. He advised he'd just swapped some bontebok for sable. One of the sable was ready to shoot now and he had someone who wanted it. That means the animal will be placed in an enclosure and 'hunted'. To my mind...

SA PH's and Outitters- How does the game breeding affect your hunting business?

@ BillC Yes we must stick together. More than one of my 'hobbies' is under threat due to the antis, so I agree with that 100%. A collector can still have skill, just as hunter can be a poor hunter. I hope that all makes sense?
  33. MJ75

SA PH's and Outitters- How does the game breeding affect your hunting business?

No. I prefer to hunt species in their native range. I have taken species that have been introduced to areas before. But no longer wish to do this. Each to their own. My 'fake comments' seem to have touched a raw nerve. So for the purposes of clarity, I'll add again that a line bred animal, not...

SA PH's and Outitters- How does the game breeding affect your hunting business?

The pink springbok comment was written tongue in cheek... I'm seeing copper, black, and white springbok, white blesbok appear on trophy lists. I know at least one black impala ram has also been 'hunted'. Not all hunting in RS is fake, I've never said all of it was fake. I am well aware their is...

I'm hunting in South Africa in june of this year. This will be my third and final time in RSA. I have no interest in black, white, copper and pink springbok. Last time in RSA I hunted with a PH who's very big in game farming also. He farms golden wildebbest and black impala amongst others. He...

All, thanks for the replies they are appreciated. I totally understand the importance of shot placement, however with these kinds of threads I always find the replies interesting. NAMIBIA: Did Someone Go Hunting With Kalahari Hunting Safaris?

Hi, no direct references yet. I'm booked for RSA in 2015 which will be my third visit there. I'm looking to broaden my horizons and like the look of Namibia. Kudu Rifle

Again a very boring choice but I used my .30-06 and 180 grain Sako Super Hammrhead rounds. I took a kudu bull at 220 yards in the base of the neck as he walked away from me. He simply crumpled on impact and didn't run one single yard. Unsurprisingly as his neck was broken. Shot placement is...

How much does it usually cost to go on a hunting trip in Africa

Would anyone agree with the following, that South Africa appears to be the cheapest country to hunt in, with Namibia second cheapest? I know I'm comparing apples with oranges, but overall this is how it appears to me. There is then a considerable price increae when hunting Eastern Africa.
