    Ruger New African Rifle

Kind of neat looking to the picture of the new African (beside the muzzle brake that is). I got mine from the first batch who reached this shores in 2008. After some touch ups it looks like this: Seems like Ruger have spyed on me when you look at the new model. Anyway, my African has become...

    375 Ruger?

I have tried both the Swift A-frame and Barnes TSX in 270 grs with good result, but have come the full circle back to my favourite bullet; the Woodleigh. In the 375 Ruger I load the 300 grs PP with 78 grs of IMR 4350 which more or less duplicate the H&H load. For me that is fast enough as my...

    Ruger Rifles

Ruger rifles (as well as a 20 guage Red Lable shotgun and a Super Blackhawk 44 mag revolver) has been my go to rifles for many years. What I like is their no nonsens image, the scope mount systen, their ruggedness, and for me at least, the stock design. What some Ruger rifles to a sertain...

    is south africa the best

So far twice to South Africa (northern Limpopo) for PG and in both cases it was a sucess. Thats in regards of game taken, but also lodging, weather, nature, pepole, service and food. For me coming out of the high north, the abundance of different game was a mere shock (a positive one). It...

Trousers & Shirts - Black Out vs. Camo?

This is one of the American bowhunters. A NY firefighter by the way. They had a great sense of humor, and the baboon was huge.

Trousers & Shirts - Black Out vs. Camo?

I was sharing camp with 7 bow hunters from NY in 2008 in Limpopo. All used faded cotton camo shirts and pants. Nothing fancy, just plain brown/faded green camo patterns. They huntet both from high seats and ground blinds. Those were experience plains game bowhunters, an yes, they connected...

Nyala or Kudu - Which is your favourite?

Jerome, that "dance" was absolutly beautiful! I got my Nyala in Limpopo, but the stalking was as demanding as I could hope for. Not that big, but he gave me a challenging day in the bushveldt that I will remember for ever. The Kudu is also a most regal animal, both to watch and to stalk...

    375 Ruger and IMR 4350

Any of you guys who have reloading data for this combo: 375 Ruger and IMR 4350? I get hold of two boxes of IMR4350, but no good data. I plan to load both the 275 grn Hornady SP and the 300 grn Woodleigh SP. Also data for the Barnes TSX 270 grn are of interest. Arild

    NAMIBIA: Ozondjahe Safaris May 2009

Congratulation Paul, look like you had a great time. We are five guys planning for Namibia in 2011 and Ozondjahe is high on our list of posiible locations. Can you fill in a bit more about what the terrain was like, the amount of game seen, as well as distances driven each day spotting for...

    Gun case

Second the Hardig Storm Case. I have one and it is very robust and "user friendly" with all the latches, handles and wheels. The backseat with all those strong/heavy cases is the weight. We Europeans are handicapped by the 20 kilo limit for checked in luggage, including the gun case on most...

    Judging Blue Wildebeest

My most exiting hunt i Africa so far was taking my blue wildebeest in the Limpopo bush veldt. A small herd was spotted and we followed them for most of the morning. The tracker said that the bull was a good one, so we hang on to them. Finally they became aware of us and took off, but the...

Luxury versus not so luxury accommodations

Last year in Limpopo I talked a lot to my PH who owned a smallish farm and wanted to start as an small scale outfitter. He also had contacts with other farm owners for hunting plains game on their property and figured out he could make a living out of this besides farming. The problem was...

    South Africa or Namibia ?

I´m just a greenhorn with two South African farm hunts for PG on my back. That said I have hunted moose, red deer and roe deer for more than 40 years in my local woods and wilderness. RSA farm hunting is so different, the amount of game and species is ovehelming to one used to spot a deer or...

    .375 Ruger

When I gave my 375H&H/M70 to my son as a PHd graduation present, I was in no doubt that my next 375 rifle would be a Ruger Hawkeye. I have no problem with the length and weight of the 375 H&H rifles owning and shooting a few over the last 35 years. But this new cartridge / rifle combo has a...

    BRNO 602

I have had two of these rifles (ZKK 602) in 375 H&H through the years. They are a bit rough, but one of thebest full size actions made after WWII in my humble opinion. Usually very accurate, a little bit on the heavy side, but that´s a pluss regarding recoil. Warne used to made really...

    Judging Bushbuck

All the rams I saw along the Limpopo banks had this brown / reddish color, and very pronounced white spots. Owen. I was a bit surprised when the PH told me to be ready with the rifle when we went into the bush tracking the one I shot. He said that they could attack like lightning and they...

    Judging Bushbuck

A very good write up Frederik, and some great bucks! So far I have been lucky and got my bushbuck, but it took me two trips to Limpopo before I could anchore this one. We where stalking along a path beside the Limpopo River and got a glimpse of him when he crossed the almost dry river...

Your opinion on Best Caliber for plainsgame in Africa?

I voted for the 338 Winmag, probably one of the best big game cartridges ever developed the way I see it. As a novice African hunter with only two plains game safaris so far, I have a limited amount of African game to base my experience on. But I have used it, and seen it used for many years...

    A 375 Ruger Upgrade

Friends. Last year I purchased a new Ruger Hawkeye in 375 Ruger. An old Ruger fan since I bought my first SA Super Blackhawk in 44 Rem mag in 1975, I was kind of intrigued by this new caliber and rifle. The rifle felt good in the gun store. After I got it home, I decided that this one is...

    Judge This Kudu For Yourself

I voted 55, mostly because the twists are a bit shallow, and I read somewhere that deep curls add a significant amount to lenght. I´m just a greenhorn, but pleased to see that i had a hit on this one :)

    Judging Warthog

Jerome. That skull mount is quite a talking piece around my house. The kids in the neighborhood used to ring the doorbell asking to have a look at the pig. I told them it was was the grandfather to Pumbaa from the movie "The Lion King" :D It was shot on its way out of a waterhole we was...

    Judging Warthog

I love hunting warthogs, but the two I got so far was game of oportunity. Never the less... they get the blood rushing :D The first one from 2006. And on the wall. The second one from 2008.

    Favorite Rifle

Not an easy one this one... I guess it must be my "go to rifle" which is an old Ruger M77 MKII, stainless and with the paddle stock. It has a Shilen barrel in 35 Whelen and is a trusty companion for whatever I might run into. Also my new Ruger Hawkeye in 375 Ruger seems to be a great rifle.

From across the pond and up North

New "kid" on the block (63 years :D) Learned about this place on AR. I have been a hunter for many years, red deer, roe deer and moose in my native Norway, pluss both waterfowling and upland bird hunting. A bit "americanised" in my choice of firearms, mostly Ruger and Kimber. Calibers...

Which is the hardest Spiral Antelope to hunt in South Africa?

I have only tried for two of them so far, the bushbuck and the nyala. The bushbuck was defenately the hardest to get, perhaps due to the dense riverine bush along the Limpopo. Also the Bushbuck blended magically in with the sunspots on the ground and on the leaves and scrub under the big trees...

What's your favourite plaingame to hunt

On my two trips (so far) to RSA I hunted hard and long for bushbuck. The terrain along the banks of Limpopo River was both beautiful and challenging, and the sneaky bushbuck kept slipping away all the time. I nailed one at last, but he is a smart and cunning opponent, so my favourite so far is...

    Judging Waterbuck

A very Regal animal the waterbuck I got mine on the banks of old Limpopo River close to the Stockpoort border crossing. Not that big, but good mass and a very challenging hunt that lastet close to three days. The biggest one got away, but I´m very happy with this one.

    Why go:

First posting, heard rumors at AR that this site was a good one. Been around there since the early beginning. Been twice to RSA, and as folk says; once there, one is changed forever. Getting the trophy shipment from last year in a month or so, like Christmas doing the unpacking. Have...
