Hi Big5er,
I had a 460WBY and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy; Roy must have been pissed when he design that load. I shoot a Rigby 416 now and am very happy. Given the choice of your two, go with the Lott. Good luck and good hunting.
Saw a monster kudu at Jerome's place last April (upper 50's maybe bigger?)...don't shoot it, I've got just place for it in my den. Plenty of big impala there too. Have fun!
Hi Bryce,
My CZ 550, also in Rigby 416 has performed flawlessly in some very nasty/wet conditions in Alaska so I'm not sure about the problem you have encountered. I would also be a bit wary taking a gun after a big ugly if I didn't have 100% confidence. Good luck with your CZ and I hope they...
Hi Chaser, good to stick to your "guns" on this topic and I support you not hunting predators...since you are not going to be doing so, may I shoot your quota?
Wet wipes (yes, the same unscented ones I use on my baby). Never head into the wet Alaskan bush or hot AZ hills without them. Many uses that I won't go into.
Hey there az.hunter. I spent 7 of the best years of my life in Flag and miss it daily now that I'm out in California. I still hunt 6A elk (when I can draw, which I didn't this year) & 19A for mule deer. I guess I'm forced to hunt elsewhere this year...maybe Zambia or back to Namibia! Welcome...
Hi there BangFlop,
I shoot a CZ 550 in .416 Rigby. It's a pretty inexpensive gun, simple to maintain and I can get the ammo just about anywhere. I've taken a few bears with it and am looking forward to taking to Africa next summer.
Hi Beto,
In low light and in my experience, the Trijicon was very clear in both heavy fog of the Alaskan tundra as well as the deep undergrowth of coastal Alaska, much better than my Leupold has performed in the same conditions. That said, side by side on the shooting range here in California...
My vote is for the Trijicon as well. I have the Model TR21R (1.25–4x24) on my CZ 550 in .416 Rigby and the Model TR20 (3-9x40) on my Weatherby 340 mag and both are crystal clear and can take the beating I tend to give my rifles, not to mention the luggage handlers of British Airways.
Hi Michael, availability of ammo was the reason I went with a .416 Rigby for my CZ, you can get it just about anywhere. Standard stuff. CZ makes a great rifle; enjoy it!
Hi,
I used a Tuff-Pac last year in Namibia and it worked like a charm; no issues. Getting into Namibia with my rifle was easier than LEAVING California. Windhoek is piece of cake and they are actually very friendly (again, not so much coming in/out of SFO). Good luck and good shooting!
Took my Weatherby .340 to Namibia last year and shot six animals with six bullets (250 grain Nosler Partitions). May be overkill for the smaller animals but worked like a charm for me. Taking my 300 Win Mag next time for the cats.
Congratulations! I just got mine back from Tru-Life Taxidermy and up on my wall. If you are like me, you will count the days until you either get your trophy or get the chance to hunt them again!
Post pictures when you get a chance, I a big fan of the big blue beasts!
I'm going with Kudu #2 for the tighter curls. Yes Kudu #1 may appear to have taller horns/ That said. neither would be passe in my scope and don't worry about the tape measure...it is the memory that matters.
Hi Heeler75,
I've killed quite a few mule deer and two elk with my Marlin 30-30 (was my Grandmother's so it is on a cut down stock and shorten barrel) so I guess it would be good enough for the plains games of Africa & I hope to have my son shoot it over in Namibia in a few years but I plan...
Heading back up to Alaska for bears this year but looking for either a buffalo & elephant in the Caprivi or leopard / lion combo near Etosha. Still looking and finger's are crossed the economy holds!
Shot placement is everything. If you can shoot a bigger bore and not develop a flinch, go for it. If you spot on with a .375, it should be enough for anything that walks...then again, I would always prefer a little more lead entering a pissed off animal at a higher velocity. Some animals...
Weatherby 340 Mag; perfect on elk, moose, bears of all kind and did just fine with Namibian plains game. After a few more hunts in Africa, I hope my next favorite is the CZ 550 in 416 Rigby.
Hello Ray,
I would be interested in both your finished product and how you would recommend a newcomer may enter the field. I have, through passing of our older generation, come into possession a number rifles and had fun refitting them, replacing their stocks/triggers and refinishing the...
Hunting Elephants
Wow, amazing clip.
Quick question to those that have hunted them, are all shots within 20 meters or are those just the ones that make the videos? Most of my brown bear hunts end up with a shot within 70 meter or so and thought that was often too close for comfort. Also, I...
Hi Bill,
I wish I could say I've booked my 2nd safari, but I have not as of yet. Your list looks great & I had a great 1st safari bagging an Impala & Gemsbok, and a few other animals that I just had to have before I returned from Namibia.
My next trip is going to be for either the big...
Only hunted Namibia once I can say that all the animals I hunted were enjoyable for their own reasons but my favorite(s) was the impala. Such an amazing animal and not easy to hunt. That said, the zebra, yes I said zebra, was my hardest trophy to obtain as they are smart (horse smart!), wary...
Hi there Oscar.
i own a CZ 550 in 416 Rigby and am liking quite well. I have always shot Weatherby but didn't like the heavies (416 & 460). I looked at both the Ruger and larger caliber rifles but, like the posters before me, I like to have a few bullets in as backup. I've taken it to Alaska...
I have a Marlin 30-30 that was purchased in the 1950's by my grandfather as a "gift" to my grandmother (I guess she passed on a lot of deer out of concern of her flinch due to the fact that she was shooting a standard 308 that just didn't fit her). My grandfather took the Marlin down to the...
Here's the reason my first safari was in Namibia & with Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris.
We came across this bull with the sun setting and running short on shooting light. As we closed within 100 yards of the Gemsbok we buggered out several smaller (so Andries, my PH, claims) Gemsbok and he...
Shot this one at 7:15 in the a.m. and was lucky to come across him as we had been hunting Burchells and did not expect him to step out.
As Boddington once said, turning down a Kudu is like refusing a gift from God...don't do it!
Hello Enysse,
I've only taken one eland and in no way am an expert in the subject and would defer trophy size to the experts here but can tell you that although my eland will not break any records, the hunt, stalk and character of the eland makes it a true trophy to me.
The stalk was epic with...
Wow Ian, this is right up my line of hunting. After toughing Alaska every other year for America's dangerous game, i would love to do the same in Africa. Although I'm not as spry as I was in my twenties and "Office Ass" has begun to set in, I have always enjoyed my trophies that came with the...
Hi Jerome,
Fantastic site and I've learned a lot from visiting the companies and outfitters that are listed here. One quick question, is there any way to search by specie? I'm looking to get back into Africa to hunt the big cats but am having to go through each site one by one. Being able...
