Looking for feedback from Africa hunters with experience using 6.5mm cartridges

I found for some of the Euro rounds, which were military rounds to start, we have custom rounds available. Also, I'm starting to see hotter loads in special ammo offerings from some of the major makers, but expect to spend a good buck for them.

    Unprovoked Cape Buffalo Charge

Thanks for that clarification. From my laptop, I couldn't tell. Not enough fidelity in the audio I guess for that to come through. It's a moot point, but I wonder had the hunter fired another shot if he'd have stopped him. As it is, he was apparently backstopped by the PH, so we'll never...

For Sale Ruger 77 Magnum .458 Lott

For such a lovely piece, sounds very reasonable. But it's not for me for two reasons. 1) I'm not of the income level where I could even dream of hunting the big five. Only plains game for me. 2) I'm not very good with recoil, and the .458 Lott is right up there in the ionosphere in terms of...

    Hog/boar/pig gun

The Marlin is a fine gun. Don't own one, but I'd like to have one. However, while the .30-30 Winchester is sufficient, the same gun in .35 Remington has more punch, especially if you hand load or go with custom loaded ammo. We have some custom loaders in the U.S. which put out far more potent...

    Unprovoked Cape Buffalo Charge

Do we know that to be the case? Can't tell from the video who shot. I did notice the hunter had a double rifle. The time gap between shots was enough to re-aim and fire the second shot. Does anyone know that didn't happen? Just curious.

On the other side, I have a 7 x 57 mm Mauser, which is very similar to the 7mm-08. And I have had my eye on a 280 Remington -- a Sako -- which I hope to get once things get back to normal around here with the shutdown. The latter falls right in between the two power-wise. I'm here in...

7mm-08 is supposed to be readily available, but perhaps not as much out west. My first rifle was a Browning A-bolt hunter in 7mm Remington Magnum. After completing hunting safety training back in 1986 while in Colorado attending training at what was Lowrey AFB in Denver, I went shopping for a...

Interesting being I just posted an inquiry regarding anyone with experience dealing with Ultimate Hunting Safaris. That said, there are several with similar names, one of which is in the North Cape. The one I'm speaking of is in Mpumalanga, near Kruger National Park.

SOUTH AFRICA: Has Anyone Hunted With Ultimate Hunting Safaris In Mpumalanga?

    9.3x62 plains game

The .35 Whelen. That said, the latter is just a little less potent. Not by much, but a little. It's a .30-06 necked up to .35 caliber. Using European nomenclature, it would be a 9 x 63mm. Actual 9mm bullets are .356 caliber. The .35 caliber rifle rounds are .358 caliber. In comparison...

Good to know. Again, the AI definitely adds some 'horsepower' to the 280. However, for myself, having a 7mm Rem Mag already, I've decided to stick with the regular 280 Remington version, if I get one. Unfortunately with tax season here and our pursuing building out our basement, I don't have...

Got a correction. Turns out he bought the gun from the seller, so the store owns it. My gunsmith also says 1 in 9 is best to cover it all, but 1 in 9 1/2 would do. This one is the McGowen in 1 in 9 1/2.

7mm rifles, whats your thoughts, favourites

Being it's built on the .30-06 Springfield case rather than the .308 Winchester, when loaded to potential the 7mm-08 won't be able to keep up with it. The .280 Remington is very similar but has the added advantage of bullets selection. The only draw back to the .270, and that's a minor one, is...

Exacalacally. ; ) Which is why I'd like to get this nice Sako custom I found in .280 Rem. It would fill the gap between my 7mm Mauser and 7mm Rem Mag. Not needed. Just a nice gap filler.

Thank you for that observation as well. This said, I made an inquiry to the seller and found it's actually a consignment piece. The store mentioned it had a custom barrel on it. I asked what kind, and noted the concern regarding the twist rate. He just wrote me saying he called the owner and...

Just spoke to my gunsmith and asked about his experience in building 6.5 x 284 Normas. He's done quite a few and he's very impressed with it. Most were competition rifles, and some of his have won championships here on the east cost. But he said the last couple were for hunting and it makes a...

Just found a lovely Sako in .280 Remington for a great price, but the problem is, like other commercial .280 Remington rifles I've seen, it has a 1 in 10 twist barrel. This is fine for 150 grain bullets and lighter, but gets iffy at 160 grains and fails beyond that. So, they lose their...

Now I'm going to look a bit fickle, but I'm not convinced I will go with the AI version. Being I have a 7 x 57 Mauser and a 7mm Rem Mag, and the 280 AI pushes the lighter bullets up to near 7 RM velocities, it's kind of redundant. I was leaning toward the AI because of the anemic looking...

    Kudu Rifle

I had the .35 Whelen built for close/moderate range elk hunting, but never got back out west to hunt again. I'm planning on bringing it to Africa as my heavier piece for zebra and gemsbok. Not necessary, but being my first trip thought I'd bring plenty of gun for the bigger game. The other...

From what I understand it is not exactly the P. O. Ackley design, but close and they gave it the name. There is the 280 Remington, which is the straight .30-06 necked down to .284 caliber with the shoulder moved slightly forward. Then there is the 280 Ackley Improved, which is now available in commercial ammunition, and a handful of commercial rifles. I'm likely going to use a Belgian FN Mauser...

I get it. I haven't hunted with my 6mm Remington. Not yet. Lovely range gun, but I'd only use this is certain circumstances, like large varmint, javelina, small deer depending on the terrain. I prefer the .257 Roberts for that business, or better yet, the 7 x 57 Mauser. Both work.

    Kudu Rifle

I prefer the little extra "umfph" you get from the 6mm Remington. Never understood why that round didn't become popular, other than apparently Remington's marketing team muffed the job, like they did with the 280 Remington. As I've said before, I have a 6mm Rem, a .257 Roberts, 7 x 57 Mauser...

Thanks. When it comes to hunting, especially a trip to Africa, I am not going to skimp on cartridges. I'll go premium from a custom loader. There's Nosler custom (for Nosler bullets), Hornady (for Hornady bullets), then several custom providers that offer options. I found Hendershots, a...

No. it's not the same. As some have written, you can kill an Elk or a Bull Moose with a .243 Winchester, but is it wise? No. Not wise at all. You may kill it outright, or you may wound it, have it run off and you never find it. It suffers, you get nothing. It's a lose-lose proposition...

Just curious. What's the downside of the ELD-X? Never used them. Just wondered. I'm planning to have custom-loaded ammo from Hendershots of Maryland. Options for loading a plethora of cartridges include Barnes, Berger, Hornady, Nosler and Swift. Sometimes others are available as well.

LOL! I think it's already been established that Bob and I are on the same wavelength. Looking for feedback from Africa hunters with experience using 6.5mm cartridges

I would/will if going to the Kalahari or like area. For me, the magnums, like the 7 Rem, are long-range guns only. I'm not interested in the 6.5 magnums either for the same reason. Having a 7 Rem Mag, and looking at the various 6.5 magnum types, it would be superfluous. No point. I'm...

Got one better. I particularly like this because of the white maltese cross on black tunic. This was worn by the hospitalar knights -- versus the Templars, who wore white tunics with red crosses. I am not a huge fan of magnums, and will only use them if I need them. Out in Colorado, for instance. Bought a Browning A-bolt hunter in 7mm Rem Mag as my first rifle, because I was in Colorado looking to hunt mule deer and elk. Gun store recommended either a .30-06 or the 7RM, saying the...

Looking for feedback from Africa hunters with experience using 6.5mm cartridges

Yes. The 6.5mm would be the smaller of two rifles I would bring on any Africa hunt. It's just that on a follow on trip I would likely be looking for more in terms of the smaller animals; springbok, bushbuck, duiker, etc. That said, I do have a .257 Roberts. So all this might be an academic...

Looking for feedback from Africa hunters with experience using 6.5mm cartridges

Thanks. Again, I'm not looking for a magnum, per se. I have that 7mm Remington Magnum, and looking at the 264 Winchester Magnum, I found not much difference with the same weight rounds. I'm looking at the 6.5 not as a necessity, but as a "filler" gun I might have fun with, but which would be...

I am probably opening up a pandora's box, but thought I'd ask. I have a Model 96 Swedish Mauser that I had customized back in the 90s. Dumb move in that I made it too fancy to hunt with. My gunsmith buddy went all out on it, jeweling the bolt, and had a stock made with exhibition grade...

Being a "gun nut," I naturally had to add a 7 x 57 Mauser to my collection. Bought one some years ago used via gunbroker.com. Bid on it and won without contestation. Don't remember what I paid for it, but it was very reasonable. It's a Ruger Model 77, with a lovely stock; a decent looking...

Terms I am tired of hearing

Ditto on the "mag" versus "clip." They are NOT interchangable. I always tell my students, the M1 Garand (with the accent placed on the first, not second, syllable) uses a clip to load it's fixed magazine. The M-14 (or M1A Civilian version) has a removable magazine. That thing that comes out...

Thank you. And yes, that was a typo. You got my intent... it was a .25-06, not .20-06. SHEEESH! (Talk about overbore!) As I said earlier, I didn't really need it, being I already have a .257 Roberts. Had one of the VZ-24 Czech Mausers I bought converted. It's really nice, with a unique...

    .270 vs .280

Yes, because the .03-06 case was pretty efficient in the first place according to P.O Ackley. There is only a 5% increase in case capacity using said modifications. Some other cartridges got better results, with some, I understand, reaching 15% increases. Now that does quite a bit. If I...

    .270 vs .280

I understand there were a number of variances, but whatever SAAMI settled on, it provides an option which is a little different than the standard Remington or the .270. That was the point. That said, the ammo is expensive, so best if the owner reloads.
