    Leopard hunt!

tap, First a big congratulations to you and your wife. That is a very nice leopard that she shot. Second I couldn't agree more with Safari-lawyer that any mature male leopard killed legally is a trophy. If you go on another leopard hunt and pass on a cat the size of the one your wife shot...

    Belated Hello

timbear, No! Two rifle are not necessary. The 375 is perfect for a one rifle safari for buff/PG safari. I'd bring a second sighted in scope and be very happy. A few solids for the really small guys and a couple boxes of premium expanding bullets for everything else and you'll be set. On my...

    What to shoot first?

Message, Let your safari unfold as it will. Take your PH's advise and take a good trophy as it presents itself. I recommend you have your taxidermy done Stateside. Far less variables and less opportunities for mistakes if you have it done in the US. Mark

    What are your Thoughts

Guys, We represent multiple safari operators in 10 different African countries. None of them charges a missed shot fee. What BS! Every hunter misses and wounds on occasion. It's just part of hunting that we all will expereince sometime. I'm always the last one to accuse an operator of gouging...

I Would Appreciate Some Advice on a Hunting Trip to Africa...

VanderLaan, I think the country you choose should be dependent on the experience you and your wife are looking for. RSA, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe all offer economically priced hunts and each of these five can provide beautiful accommodations in permanent camps. The only real...

    Fast / First Responders

Second Wind, If all the stars align a short notice booking can offer an excellent opportunity. I think what some people don't realize is that if they pick up a cancellation hunt for instance they are buying the hunt and dates that worked for the client that cancelled. They are not buying...

Package hunt vs. Day rate + trophy fees, which do you prefer?

As to the original question I have to say that I recommend as a general rule that a client pay the day rates and trophy fees for the animals that they want. This gives you flexibility and your not locked into any particualr bag. A package can be a very good deal or a rip off. I represent a...

Package hunt vs. Day rate + trophy fees, which do you prefer?

Rocco, I strongly disagree with you. Your proposed payment system sounds far too much like your buying the animals. The people I work with in Africa are selling a hunting experience in an area that holds good numbers of the animals a client is interested in and they will provide whatever is...

What do you consider to be a trophy?

Yeah! I think a trophy needs to be judged by what the animal that you shot meant to you at the time you took it not the score it provides for the books. As others have related animals taken early on in our hunting carreers may be better trophy to us as individual than the B&C qualifier hanging...

    Managment buff hunts???

Muntjac If your trying to save some pounds on a bufffalo hunt I might suggest as Phil did that you book a buffalo cow hunt. I've shot several buffalo and I can tell you that a cow hunt is every bit as exciting as bull hunt. Mark

    Judging Bushbuck

This is my best at 17"+ taken in Mozambique with Mokore Safaris in '07. There was no need to worry about the trophy quality of this ram. He now resides as a lifesize mount in my living room. I've been quite lucky with bushbuck taking 5 varieties of bushbuck in 6 different countries. They are one...

    Most Under Rated African Trophy

To me the most under rated African trophy is the hyena when hunted on purpose. Next to the baboon IMO the hyena is the sharpest pencil in the box in Africa. Even in an area with lots of hyena getting them on bait is often a trick.

Where are the biggest Kudu currently being taken

Terminator, A really big kudu bull can come in a lot of places on occasion but in my experience I've only found two spots that I could recommend as offereing a real chance at a bull of 55" plus. In both of these areas I think you could hold out for a really big bull and expect to have an...

    1st shot solids?

Hunting South Africa in September, is it favorable?

    1st shot solids?

Big5er Most modern day but not all PH's want you to use an expanding bullet to make th biggest hole possible in your buffalo. A solid works but it doesn't cause the tissue damage and therefore the followup can be much longer. Shattering a leg bone and having it explode into the chest cavity...

    375 RCBS seating problem

Jamie, Good luck with the custom seater. Loading monometal bullets is a little different. One thing that may help with load compression is to use a drop tube and and fill the case slowly. It will make a remarkable difference in the space left in the case once the powder is poued in.

    Problem clients

Mike, In my business and in the outfitter or safari operators business we just try to do whatever we can to make the clients hunt a successful experience for them. 375 Weatherby

LRich, I have a custom Mod 70 in 375 WBY. I like it very much and get about 200 FPS over the standard H&H version. With TSX and BBS you've pretty much got Africa covered.

    375 Rifle Weight

I have to agree with Craig. I have an older model Dakota in 375 H&H with a Clifton stock. It weighs 8.25# with a 3x9 Trijicon. The recoil is very tolerable but I think the 14" LOP and straight combo stock are what makes it so easy to shoot.

    375 H&H FOR PLAINS GAME

There's no reason to not take your 375 on PG hunt. As Fredrick said with a premium 270 gr. bullet it is up to any task. Throw in some solids for the little guys and your set for eland through duikers.

    HUNTING Giraffe

Thx Fredrick. It just made sense that if the vertebrae were 4"-4.5" that the neck shot might be the way to go as it would avoid any chasing of the giraffe around the concession. I've had client shoot these guys too low and with inadeguate calibers causing a long and painful chase.

    HUNTING Giraffe

Guys, I've seen many giraffe but I have had no desire to shoot one as a trophy in the past but with a lion hunt in Zim a possibility for '12 a giraffe is looking like an economical way to get some huge baits up quickly. My question is for people who are familiar with giraffe would you try...

Best Area for Hunting Elephant in Zimbabwe?

Alcornoque, I think the best bet for consistent results on big bulls in Zimbabwe is offered in the Forestry areas around Hwange Park. September until the rains come can be exceptional there with clients actually seeing 100's of bulls on their safaris. The pic below is me with two sets off tusks...

    Kudu Rifle

I think this is where we seperate trophy shooters from hunters. Caliber for Leopard

Jose, I think you'll get a lot of arguement on the choice of the Nosler Partition on leopard and other thin skinned game being wrong. The front third of the bullet goes off like a grenade in the animals chest cavity causing huge tissue damage. The exit holes are often quite small as the 2...

What Do You Expect from a Show Stand?

Interesting to see all the pix as I recognized quite few faces. Jerome did get my pic but only the back of my head. As previously stated having adequate seating is important. If there is no place to sit possible clients are apt to just move on. Also I could not agree more that you can't...

    Kudu Rifle

Mike, We are on the same page here. No question that a 308, 7x57 or even smaller will kill a kudu but will you be presented that shot that will allow a smaller rifle to work? In most cases you'll probably be ok but why not be prepared for the worst case scenario. I killed my biggest kudu with...

    Caliber for Leopard

The question about what bullet is best for leopard comes up pretty often. I also think it is a subject that folks over think. Personally I recommend a hunter use the same load he is using for PG. I'd prefer the Nosler Partition or Accubond but I think good shot placement and a top end light...

What Calibre to Bring on a One-Gun Safari?

In my opinion the 375 H&H is the ideal caliber for a one rifle safari. It works as well with solids on red duiker as it does on elephant and modern expanding bullet will handle everything else. The 300 grain bullet work perfectly for everything in the bushveld and if you move out into the...

    Wearing Camouflage in Zimbabwe

I'm always telling my clients that "It probably will be OK" is not an attitude to have when traveling internationally with guns but I think in this case as long as your not wearing camo on the plane and in town your fine. I wouldn't buy camo to take on safari as it seems a little silly...

Which is the hardest Spiral Antelope to hunt in South Africa?

39" Livingstone's from Ngamo Sikumi in Zimbabwe 38" Cape from Kalahari in Botswana Both of the above eland offered a challenging tracking hunt which is normal for eland in the open bushveld. Eland are not territorial so they will wander for miles each day and they are very switched on and...

Nyala or Kudu - Which is your favourite?

I honestly think the nyala is far more attractive than a kudu and perhaps the most beautuful of the spiral horns.
