Opinions please: .375 H&H Custom Built on Remington 1917 Action

Barreled action alone is worth far more than $210. The Remington Enfield is considered the best of the Enfield's. Good steel and no duck pond in the rear bridge. (I just purchased a NOS 458 Douglas barrel, $250. From Douglas it is about $350.) I would ditch the scope mounts, the rear mount...

    Wanted 450 Rigby Reamer

Hey thanks! Looks like Rob is also in WA State, so when he is complete with the reamer, I can pay you and he can ship direct to me. This way we will avoid two more border crossings.

I will buy the package if RobMill does not. Provided it is not a big hassle to get them across the border. I am in Port Angele, just across the Straits from you.

Reamers .458 Lott vs. .450 Watts

From the PTG drawings, case lengths 458 Lott 2.854 450 Watts 2.8643 My Lott reamer 2.865 Cases 458 Lott Bell brass 2.783 Norma basic H&H brass 2.835 So, take your choice. Main thing with a big bore "stopping rifle" chamber is it must take any and all cartridges you can...

Reamers .458 Lott vs. .450 Watts

Do any of you know if the Lott reamers really are .050" longer than the print? I had read that they were, but would like to know before spending the money. I don't really see me needing more than one .458 Lott so don't know that I need to buy a reamer. But again, I'd like the ability to just...

Reamers .458 Lott vs. .450 Watts

When I built my first Lott (Maybe 1988 or so) I could not find any brass. Did some work for a retired guy from Alaska, he lived about 10 miles from my place on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. He just happened to have a 100 450 Watts cartridges and cases. After some horse trading I wound up...

.458 Lott to .450 Ackley magnum conversion?

Yea sometimes our hobby is not practical but just for fun. I have a 458 Win, and 458 Lott in the safe. But I have this rough and tough BBK action that is just begging for an ugly unusual chambering. Being an old Ackley fan (actually met the man once) I have a hankering to build his version...

    9.3x62 mauser build

Darn you are making me anxious to return to my 9.3 project after a long period of illness (prostate cancer). No scope, irons only, so it will not be drilled and tapped. Here it is, ready to silver solder the sights:

    9.3x62 mauser build

My way: Drill & tap 8-40 and mill the rear bridge in the same setup, prevents future problems. Note that everything is referenced to the bottom flat of the receiver. And if you want to go one step further, I have a jig for the surface grinder to grind the receiver ring true.

    9.3 S.A. Wildcat

Well my apologies for being away so long, it has been an uphill battle. Prostate cancer, kidneys failing, a week in the hospital, followed by cancer treatment with both drugs and the dreaded radiation treatment. Finally, the cancer is gone thanks to the "Star Wars" radiation machine. Now...

    8x68S owner's opinions

I went back and pulled up this thread as I have 8x68S on the back burner. Have been rounding up items for the past few years: 8mm barrel short chambered in 8x68S, it is a LW. 26 1/2 inches long. 8x68S finish reamer, a new never used JGS. with floating pilot. Reloading die set with a...

458 win mag barrel swap from a M43 mauser action to a VZ24 action

By all means have the action and bolt hardness tested. A M98 in my Wilson Rockwell tester below. Takes all the guesswork out of using M98's. Note that Douglas Barrels tests all actions that come through their shop for barreling. Tells us something.

Another action, this one for a 35 Whelen. D&T for 8-40. Milled off the "hump".

This one has been on my back burner for some time. Interrupted by prostate cancer and knee replacement. LW barrel. 9.3x62.

    Sight height

The Brownells calculations work good, just pay attention to detail. NECG front band is the way to go. I have an assortment of sight inserts for fine tuning. Made this jig several years ago to hold things while soldering on. Yep, a 9.3x62.

    .500 Jeffery action options?

Olympic BBK is a huge action and is threaded with the standard M98 threads. Photo below. CZ550 and Brno 602 have metric threads. Still thinking about what to chamber this one in, I have a new Pac Nor .510 barrel. And 500 Jeff reamers (finish, rougher, resize)

    1917 Enfield Eddystone Action

    1917 Enfield Eddystone Action

P14 and P17 Enfields, I love 'em. Nice and big and a good alloy. The one below is destined to be a 450 Ackley. Have the reamers, dies, and a nice barrel. The holes in the ring on your action disturb me. Right in the top receiver lug. Might have been a decommissioned Drill Purpose...

Mauser 98 smiths - getting scarcer

I am 74 years old. Used to do a fair amount of Mauser work. But now a grumpy old retired fart that got tired of useless gun regulation and silly laws. Gave up the FFL in about 2000. M70's: I love M98 actions and enjoy working on them. Reliable, well made, easy to work on and look...

Why no lever-action rifle for Elephants?

Well darn. Snowing at the farm today (26 Jan 2021) and I am sitting by the wood stove, scrolling through AH and ran across his thread. 18 inches of new snow today and my 74 year old joints needed something to do inside. First, I will not argue pros/cons of a lever gun. But the following is...

    Gunsmith Treasure Chest

I am 74 years old and know that I will not be around much longer. A priority for me in the shop is to complete several in work gun projects and to bring the shop tooling to some sort of order. Some poor bloke will be in charge of disposing my assets. It will be a lot easier if all...

    Crossbolt Wrench

On the left is a Brownells, on the right is one I made using a 1/2" grade 8 bolt for material. Note the one I made has holes of two different pin spacings. Move the pins as required. Simple job for the lathe and the vertical mill.

For Sale Weatherby 416 Factory Barrel Take Off Never Fired

Should fit OK, you will need to check headspace and time the barrel if the lug does not line up. Meaning gunsmith installation and a lathe & chamber reamer required if the barrel has to be set back for timing. If one is super lucky it will torque up with proper lug timing. Mark V barrels are...

Mauser receiver drilling jig, who makes one

Pulling up an old thread, I was googling Forster Sight Fixture. Did it this way for years: A fixture that clamps in the 6 inch mill vise. Always wanted the Forster, finally found one on the Cast Bullet site, it will be here next week. Made this fixture several years ago for aligning...

    500 Jeffery barrel selection

Chrome Molly. Stainless, to me, just does not look right on a classic big bore. Pac Nor makes good barrels, it is a shame they had the fire a couple of years back. But Chris has rebuilt and they are back in production with the expected huge backlog. Below, 458 Lott, full house loads...

    1917 Enfield action

I was sorting take off barrels for the scrapper last week and found a Enfield barrel chambered for 30 Belted Newton!!! Meanwhile back at the farm if I live long enough I have all the stuff for building a 450 Ackley on an Enfield. Barrel, reamers, dies, cases, bullets, McMillian stock...

    500 Jeffery barrel selection

I have a Pac Nor (Pre Fire) 510 barrel contoured "heavy" for the 500 Jeffery. New Old Stock, not threaded or chambered. I will take measurements and post a photo if this will help. Built a few in the past on a Pac Nor No. 6 contour with 1.300" diameter at the breech. I have reamers also.

Good article on the .450 Ackley
