Early stages of potential 1st safari

Let me just get it on record here that if I die in Africa, bury me there, cremate me on a pile of camel thorn, or leave me to the vultures (my preference) and know I was glad to make one last trip.

    question on heart shots

I suspect this is correct. First read about it in one of Dr Robertson’s books. Assuming one stopped the heart beating entirely, the animal would have several seconds of consciousness before the brain used up the oxygen already in the brain. Also (unless deer cardiac physiology is quite...

Wild hog meat… do you eat it or is it too risky?

Haven’t killed one in years but it was really good once I learned how to properly cook it. It’s not domestic meat and was extremely tough when I treated it as such. Ground and made into sausage, it was tasty if rather lean. I actually ended up corning a lot of it and that was great. Braising...

    375 ruger or 416 ruger?

All depends on what you can comfortably shoot. 375 is adequate; 416 hits harder on both ends. Some people are more or less recoil tolerant. There’s no shame in choosing a rifle that you are comfortable with.

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

I’d use my 404. Load it up, load it down, can do pretty much anything I want. Wouldn’t limit myself to dangerous game- it is fine for all hunting. With a re-sized 44 magnum handgun bullet, it’s a gentle but effective close range rifle on appropriate animals. (Not that a 400g soft wouldn’t...

    Blaser R8 Owner in USA

As always with the R8, the straight pull and interchangeable barrel are what people initially notice. Fair enough, they are nice features and the lockup mechanism is innovative and immensely strong. But the trigger being under the magazine, which shortens the action significantly, it the...

    Blaser R8 & Dangerous Game?

The general trend with Blasers is the people who have them are usually very happy with them and the people who find fault with them usually have little to no first-hand experience with them. I can understand a gunsmith not liking them: they come from the factory good to go, excellent trigger...

Big Elephant Reportedly Taken in Tanzania

I had two goats die of unknown causes and tried to burn the carcasses. It takes a shocking amount of wood to burn two goats. Love to know how they managed to burn an elephant.

One gun or two? On safari

When I went on my buffalo/hippo/elephant hunt, I took only my 404. Shot at least 6 plains game animals, never once felt my rifle handicapped me.

One gun or two? On safari

The less I carry the happier I am. Never met an animal that is killed better by a 308 than by a 375. Your buddy's wife will almost assuredly be happier with a borrowed suppressed 6.5 Creedmore or similar than any rifle you'd bring along for her.

Best watch in the 1000$ range?

I enjoy mechanical watches. I have a few I get the appeal. They are an aesthetic choice over function. Some work incredibly well and are fairly accurate. No mechanical watch is more accurate than a $12 quartz watch. And no mechanical watch is going to be more impact-resistant than an...

    Rifle Actions (Ranked)

For strength, my vote goes to the R8: “The R8 lock up was successfully tested at the DEVA institute laboratory at 1,450.0 MPa (210,300 psi; 14,500 bar) piëzo pressure.” I wonder how they generated that level of overpresure? 30-378 Weatherby full of bullseye?

    Rolex- the stupidest, lamest company

Good watches. They have made some models that are fairly low-key but the watches that generally come to mind when one says “Rolex” are entirely too flashy for my tastes. Reminds me too much of an LV bag- way too obvious. I’d rather show off with something that few people recognize in the...

    45-70 for dangerous game?

My point being the hunt is no more difficult with an inadequate weapon, only the kill. The stalk is the same, the skill of shooting is the same. It’s just more likely to wound the animal and cause undue suffering. If it required more or even different skills or presented a different challenge...

    45-70 for dangerous game?

Honest question: what’s the appeal? Archery I can understand: different skill set Handgun I understand: different skill set Rifle under the legal limit in most places? I just don’t get it. Whether I shoot a buffalo with my 404 or a 243, it’s pretty much the same on my end: stalk within 50...

    Is this legal/a good idea?

And in all honestly, the guns make it safely to destination the vast majority of the time. The baggage handlers are like most other hourly workers: just trying to make it through the day. They may do as poor a job as they can get away with; they almost certainly won’t be putting in the extra...

.270 for plains game? Should I be scrapping it?

    1) get a copy of The Perfect Shot and study well 2) put a TTSX in your rifle and live happily every after. Heavy for caliber is good, but remember the only weight that matters is the weight that remains after impact. A mono metal bullet is going to give approximately 100% weight retention so it...

    Detachable Scope and Airline Travel??

Scope on the rifle in the rifle case is as protected as it’s going to get in a carry-on. Don’t see much upside to putting my scope...

    Bullet choices for .404 Jeffery

These days, availability factors high in the choice process. The more common calibers are a higher priority than the dangerous game calibers for some of the big manufacturers. And fair enough. If I were selling all the 5.56 I could make, I doubt I’d want to change over the line to make a...

thats why I dont like doubles (have one)

It’s a classic spinous process shot. Hit a spinous process, shocked the spinal cord, up again in seconds. Barring infection, it would have healed right up. A high shoulder shot will also cause the animal to drop, but it will damage important things and eventually kill the animal. Any time...

thats why I dont like doubles (have one)

This is a still from a video I watched last night. It is the initial shot on a buffalo that fell to the shot and (predictably) soon got up and ran off. The buffalo was eventually killed from the vehicle as it charged the truck. Nobody was injured. Afterwards they had the usual talking about...

I think all the people asking “could you have done better?”(unless it is a reply to an ad hominem comment) are missing the point of reviewing these videos. The point isn’t to say “I could have done better”. The point is to say “HOW could it be done better?” We learn this by dispassionately...

    The U.N's Latest Farce

Children can’t bring a rifle to Namibia, which is why when I traveled with my wife and son, she needed only her 30-06 but for some reason I needed my 30-06 and “my” youth-stocked 243. No reason for RSA to fuss about this when they can have their cake and eat it too. The anti-hunters can...

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

Fair enough. I’ve shot a number of plains game with TSX out of my 404. Hit them harder than my 30-06 ever hit anything. The one bullet I recovered was opened. Not sure if it matters. A big bullet is kind of pre-expanded. I hear lots of people talk about them zipping right through but I’ve...

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

Those will work admirably. A nice thing about using a large bore rifle on thin shinned game is that there is so much margin that bullet choice becomes almost irrelevant. You don’t need anything near ideal for it to work extremely well. And in any event, both are good bullets.

thats why I dont like doubles (have one)

Regards bolt vs double, if there were a clear and universal superiority of one, there would be no debate. They have different attributes that may make one or the other better or worse at any very specific thing, but taken as a whole, it comes down to how someone cares to value those attributes...

Is Blaser Trying To Price Themselves Out Of The American Market???

Agreed. My Blaser is basically my “beater” rifle. Not every situation calls for my bespoke rifle. In full disclosure, if I’d have tried an R8 before I had my 404 built, I wouldn’t have had it built. It is beautiful, a functional work of art, and I am glad I had it made if for no other...

    375 RUM Any Fans?

The extra power and velocity of the 375 RUM is (properly) used to extend the range, not to increase the effects of close-in shots. 375 HH already has optimum velocity for close shots, and close shots is what you should be taking on buffalo. What is the point of dangerous game hunting if the...
