Has anyone hunted in the "tactical style" or military style desert boots?

I've used my Bates 9" desert boots a couple of times. The suede doesn't like mud much. They do offer great ankle support though, and I can walk in them all day.

Long Pants or Shorts for South African Hunt???

Stay away from polyester zip-offs. They're noisy and damage easily. I'd also suggest going with long pants. They save your skin.

Impala ram I shot in Limpopo Province of SA

Impala ram I shot in Limpopo province. 24"3/4 Right horn and 25"1/2 Left horn. I was stalking a few ewes and this trophy ram almost ran into us. Shot at 20m with my Tikka T3 30-06. 200gr Rhino bullet. Frontal shot travelled through almost the entire animal before comming to rest in...

30-06 RIFLES FOR HUNTING PLAINS GAME

The main concern would be penetration. With a 30-06, premium bullets, such as the A-Frame or TSX should retain their weight, and penetrate all the way through an Eland, provided the shot is placed correctly. An Eland still has relatively thin skin, so theres no real requirement to go heavier...

    Bowhunters with big stones

Well, each guy has at least a 66% chance of surviving, and that type of natural selection will make sure that their tribe will produce olympic sprinters

    Plains Game Rifles

Common opinion is that the 300WM is a bit fast for typical bush hunting, yet the only real problem with high speed calibres is bullet disintegration. With decent bullets though, that argument loses steam. The only other argument against the 300WM is its recoil, but with proper technique, and a...

    Custom rifles

Hopefully this thread will get some life again... I'm quite keen on carpentry, and having had some time on my hands came upon Old Tree Gun Blanks - Fine Gunstock Blanks For The Discerning Gun Wood Lover . They've got some beautiful wood, and I'm going to try my hand at making a rifle stock or...

    Bullet 9,3x62

Some rifles dont group well with monolithics because the bullet may be too long for the rate of twist. Bonded lead-core is a safe bet. Those Sako cartridges should work a treat.

    Lucking Out With A Kudu

Great read. Lucky though... But then sometimes, you get the chance to be happier with the shot that you didn't take, than the shot that you did, and those are golden.

    RECOIL!

I've done a fair bit of hunting with a 375h&h, and recoil never bothered me, yet breaking in my 30-06 and setting up the scope left me with a blue shoulder. 20 rounds. The biggest problem was that the bench was too low, so the rifle butt didn't sit nicely in my shoulder. The small contact area...

    Favorite broadheads?!?!

I've used Rage, Muzzy, Spitfire, German Kinetic and Thunderhead, and I'll stick to the Thunderheads. The 2 Bladed German Kinetic Silverflame is brilliant, but they're hard to find, and expensive to lose. Worth it on expensive animals, but I trust the Thunderheads for everything else

    Kudu Rifle

Real trophy Kudu's aren't called the grey ghosts for nothing. I've stumbled onto a fair few in the bush, and its amazing how they sometimes just stand under a tree and rely on their camo to hide them. Game-counting from the chopper you see them standing under a tree, not moving a muscle. I don't...

Hunting and Safety where do I start?

270 and 375 as a combo is good. You can use the 270 for practise and for your wife. Don't try 100 rounds in a day with the 375. Your weight helps, but cowboys do cry, especially after 100 shots of 375. I suggest you get a 270 first, and get the competency & first license done. You're bound to...

    RECOIL!

Another way of doing it... Very informative post. I'd like to add: "For every action, there is an equal and oposite reaction" So if you want to compare apples to apples, look at bullet energy. 400gr .416 Weatherby Magnum = 8778 Joules 220gr .30-06 Springfield = 4042 Joules I'd say...

Your opinion on Best Caliber for plainsgame in Africa?

It might be usefull to have a forum dedicated to equipment, cause this thread could go on forever, and then we havn't even started talking optics and accessories yet... I've been bowhunting for a long time, and recently decided that buying a rifle might be worth all the effort that gets put...

    Hunting Bushpig

A friend of mine took me along to hunt bushpigs in a macadamia nut plantation in the Tzaneen area. Pitch black night, walking around the plantation and listening out for pigs crushing a nut. My buddy had night vision bino's, and I just followed him blindly. I've gotta admit, its nerve wrecking...

Hi Jerome very nice site. I do various odd jobs, but mainly mine support in west-africa. Some of the best work I've done was low-level survey in Limpopo. Had some awesome sightings of Kudu that would make any hunter's jaw drop. Also trained a few game farmers to fly, so like I said, jack of all...

Hi everyone, I'm very impressed with the website, and I've managed to get a lot of usefull info within a very short time on this site.
