    404 Jeffery barrel length?

Almost exactly the same set up for me from Dennis Olson as well. It's been a great rifle. I also have a 24" barreled Lon Paul 404 that's just a little heavier due to the stock configuration. I cant tell any difference in barrel length when handling the two.

Which bullet in 300WM for Leopard?

Thanks for talking the time to respond. But see my prior post. The shot on this cat was appropriate and called by an experienced PH. The bullet failed to maintain integrity and did not perform in this circumstance.

Which bullet in 300WM for Leopard?

Yes, that was the entry point. But because of geography this cat was shot from elevated machan position (shooter was well above the cat) not from below or on the same plane. The camera angle is not the same as the shot angle. It was just the camera used to monitor the bait. The bullet...

Which bullet in 300WM for Leopard?

Sorry, I wasn't intending to be technical and just meant that the bullet may not perform as may be ideal at close range and highest velocity. It's my understanding that it takes some time/distance for bullets to stabilize after leaving the barrel (perhaps mostly an accuracy issue not at play...

Which bullet in 300WM for Leopard?

Leopards aren't tough to kill. I've killed far bigger game with Accubonds too. But rarely do I have occasion to shoot any of them at less than 50 yards out of a high velocity rifle such as 300 win mag. I don't believe it's purely an Accubond or Partition issue per se - I suspect it could...

Which bullet in 300WM for Leopard?

Here’s an actual frozen frame from a vid (stopped to see bullet) of leopard being struck by a 180 gr Nosler Accubond (300 win mag) at less than 50 yds. Dead at bottom of the tree? Hardly. Again, it may or may not work at close range out of a high velocity magnum. Why chance it? Just get more...

Which bullet in 300WM for Leopard?

Take it for what’s it’s worth - do not shoot a high velocity 300 mag with an expanding bullet like a 180 Nosler partition or accubond at close range (60 yds or less) and expect good results. Use the Aframe 200 grain or make sure you’re 75 yds or further.

    Good Gun Deals This Week

I guess it’s not super surprising when the better known gun dealers are sometimes doubling up on market value of their merchandise. But it is a bit disappointing. IIRC, A similar deal happened recently on Belgium 416 imperial action rifle - Champlin had it listed for $12kish, and then it was...

    Good Gun Deals This Week

Champlin's website and associated guns international postings aren't necessarily representative of what's still available for sale at the shop. I recommend calling to see whether this one is there still. I don't know that this is necessarily a "good gun deal." If it was a 450/400, 470, or 500...

    Leopard Hunt With Hounds Botswana

That can be part of the natural conclusion of continually pushing the leopard with the bushmen and/or dogs in open country. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. The leopard makes a choice to come for you at some point. If the hunter happens to be in the bed of the truck at that moment...

    Good Gun Deals This Week

Probably better in its own thread, but the SRO is not a RMR. The SRO was designed primarily for pistol use within the sporting community. It’s awesome. The RMR was designed for multi-platform use, specifically including military and LE. The SRO is not intended to replace the RMR. The RMR...

I enjoy both RMR and SRO optics. I like the SRO sight picture better. But the RMR seems significantly more rugged and combat worthy to the extent that matters on the weapon the optic is intended for.

    Would you hunt with it?

I don't know where I heard it originally, but I was told 1-2" at 60-65 yards is great for a double. Some do better, and many more do not. Maybe try that distance when finalizing your handloads? Once you're done getting your optimal handload set, perhaps also see what the typical factory...

    Wanted Rigby Or Mauser

Very nice rifle - I talked to guys at Cabelas about it early this month. They were dropping the price 10% in February (weird 6 month rule at some Cabelas gun rooms), and I was thinking of buying it then - so, good snag.

    Westley Richards in 476 WR

I think you were saying a WR drop lock "shouldn't" be priced the same or more than a Holland Royal .... 1000% agree. Some of the dealers have gone bonkers on pricing, resulting in doubles sitting for years due to expectations set by these wild prices on consignment.

    Calibers for leopard

Yeah, well a smart man won’t feel comfortable following up on a leopard in the dark with a rocket launcher. They are super fast and quiet, and at their best in the dark. We are none of those things. That’s why plenty of PHs follow up with shotguns with buckshot. I doubt you’ll find too many...

    Calibers for leopard

It’s not an issue with the caliber. 300 and 375 are both legendary and super worthy. The issue is the risk (that most folks aren’t aware of) taken by shooting a fragmentable projectile at approximately 3000 ft per second into even light skinned creatures like leopards. I’ve seen it first hand...

    Calibers for leopard

As long as it’s legal in the country, a 6.5 Creedmore shooting a quality 140ish grain bullet topped with a quality scope at a range of 50-85 yards in the hands of a good marksman (a hunter who practices) is absolutely fine for a baited leopard hunt. Leopards aren’t hard to kill if shot...

    Good Gun Deals This Week

I’m not a Heym or double rifle expert by any standard. I wouldn’t say they are overpriced. I believe they are a newer manufactured, mechanically well functioning, mid range priced double rifle. I think what you see is what you get in a good way. If you paid 15k for a nicely dressed brand new...

Authentic Leopard Hunting With PANTHER TRACKERS

Panther Trackers is Gavin Lipjes = one of the few premier houndsmen in Africa today. He serves as a houndsman for other PHs too, so the fact there's another PH in the pic likely means your PH thought enough of Gavin to hire him as the leopard houndsman. Houndsmen who are also PHs can either...

    Heym for sale

It’s all relative. One guy’s 20k is another guy’s 5k to another guy’s 100k. None of us are going to use a double rifle to the extent a professional hunter will. Fact is almost every one of us as hunters is likely better off with a $5k (or less) scoped factory bolt set up than whatever...

    partitions for dangerous game

I recommend not using a partition out of a 300 magnum (or other high velocity caliber) at around 50 yards on any game, specifically including thin skinned cats. I’m only speaking to use of the partition at high velocity at relatively close range. Just don’t do it.

    Researching leopard hunts...

Vaughn Whitehead Wilson is blue chip for hunting leopards with hounds in Zim. I think you can either hire him separately to bring his hounds or book the entire hunt through him (probably preferred). But if you're thinking of hounds in Zim, he's definitely one of the best.

    Researching leopard hunts...

Most important considerations: 1) Location 2) Location 3) Tie for Location and PH and timing People kill leopards all over the place. There are far far less that have a 85% or more success rate. There are even less that kill big leopards at a 85% or more success rate. Dog hunts are super...

    Leopard: different way

I shot my first leopard on the ground in the daylight at 7:30 am. In the market for a double

I'm looking for a vintage British double in a traditional caliber (would consider 375 Flanged and Up). I'd also consider a nicely appointed Heym (my vintage search has so far been unsuccessful). My intent is to keep it below $25k. But the spend is flexible depending on the right double. I...
