In Scotland the trouble is that when grouse are in season the days are already shortening. We would allow you to bag the cook after sunset. Due to seasons you are limited to between 12 August and 30 September. Cooks are in season all year.
When I was in UK I used to shoot at Bisley on a frequent basis. Contact NRA for details of which ranges are covered for heavier calibres. I know in those days the zero range was covered for .458.
You might also consider contacting the British Deer Society.
I suspect you are correct. I don't believe that performance is possible. Anyway the BEF could certainly rattle out very fast accurate fire. I think it is a documented fact that the Germans vastly overestimated the humber of machine guns that the BEF had. The rifle fire was so fast and...
Things had been going badly with my GF. So I booked a table for 2 at a favourite place of mine for 8pm.
Things just got worse. By 9pm she hadn't potted a single ball.
A bear and a rabbit are taking a dump in the woods. the bear turns to the rabbit and says:
"Don't you find the shit sticks to your fur?"
The rabbit replies:
"It sure does".
So the bear picks up the rabbit and wipes his arse with him.
Standardisation
I didn't read the whole thread. Where are you proposing to use it?
In most places in Africa I would suggest you stick to the most widely available cartridges so .375 would be the wiser choice.
One thing that amuses me in films is when the experienced shooter has to take the rifle out of his shoulder, look at it for a couple of seconds and only then cycle the bolt! Sure sign of over acting and pitiful realism.
Project Gutenberg is a non profit making site which is making books available on line. They are all totally free. I am currently working through "In Africa" which follows a DG hunt in East Africa in 1910. Amongst other experiences the writer's safari meets up with a similarly engaged Teddy...
Metal used
Would you use a hardened bullet metal. I used to use about 1 part of linotype to 2 or 3 parts of lead. As the lead was largely bullets dug out I was aware that my bullets were getting harder all the time so eventually went on to just recycling old ones. How green and eco friendly can...
Agreed 100%. We are back to the old question "Will the calibre do what I want?" As the ballistics etc. are so similar the answer must be the same to either. Frankly with either .375 a resounding yes. So go with the one in a rifle that is comfortable for you and for which you can get ammunition...
Of course I suppose it is easier to be profitable if you are "given" the fixed assets which have been stolen from the guy who originally paid for them.
Having said which I hope it does well.
It will soon be 100 years since Sgt Snoxall set the record for the mad minute. Does anybody fancy trying to beat it?
The rules are simple. You have a bolt action centre fire rifle. You start with the bolt forwards on an empty chamber in the "on guard" standing position. On the command you...
Your rifle
That is a tremendous rifle you have got there! The sheer speed at which that action can be cycled is almost unbelievable.
I sort of spumbled on this thread by accident. Be careful on maximum loads with an Enfield.
Can 12 bore slug be successfully reloaded? If so does anybody have any comments to make?
Can 12 bore slugs be cast at home or should I buy them ready made? Again any comments please.
Does anybody have any thoughts on a calibre for Bushpig?
My heaviest mid range rifle is a .300 Winchester Magnum by Parker Hale. It certainly does any job I have ever asked of it but I was wondering if my .270 Sako would be equally useful. I think it handles a fraction of a second faster than...
So it takes 5 rounds. Wow! The number of times I have needed a 3rd shot I can count on the fingers of 1 hand. The number of times I have needed a 5th shot I can count on the thumbs of 1 foot.
I do some work for an organisation via the internet. I have a number, password and PIN. Couldn't get the thing to work. I was sure I was putting in the correct number- 076200 but no go.
Then I checked. It was actually 030800.
Could only happen to a shooter.
Don't get me started on gun laws in UK. Please! And if you wre to shoot a rioter or burglar in UK- Oh my G-d you would be locked up and the key thrown away.
A word on Sako
I have a Sako although only in .270. but I have used plenty. I have never heard a bad word about any of them and they are a good quality tool for the job. Realistically there are many many rifles out there any of which will do what you want so go out and get one that looks and...
I would differ in only 1 way from the general concensus. I don't think you will even be getting a barrelled action. A rifle that has seen that much service, as evidenced by the wear, is likely to be ready for a new barrel as well! So realistically unless you are a WR collector give it a miss and...
I think the point is well made. There is so much choice of standard calibres they are usually best if you are travelling a long distance or going right off the beaten track.
Sort of reminds me of the time I had to price up 3 services we gave. They had to be between 300 and 500 quid each...
By all means sell one and get the other. The gun trade has to live somehow and every rifle sale and purchase is money in their pocket. Don't worry about the people who say either is enough to take out a bull elephant so what more do you need? Especially ignore those who say that what matters is...
I was looking at some Speer grand slam bullets for my .300 Winchester Magnum.
"Are these good for leopard?" I asked naively.
"No" said the dealer. "They kill them".
I have a 98 pattern Mauser currently in .308. The top of the receiver is marked with the German eagle, 1944 and "DOT" which I believe means it was made in the Dachau slave labour factory. Somebody told me that as it was made so late in the war the quality might be suspect. Does anybody have any...
It is a complex question. Light gathering is fine but the size of the image when it reaches your pupil is also very important. As you get older your pupil cannot open up as far as it can when you are older. So a large image is partly wasted so bang goes some of your light gathering. Also it...
I was just browsing through this subject when I thought, for no obvious reason, about my old adversary the 14.5mm. It was the soviet bloc VHMG round. Does anybody have any experience of it? I ask only out of idle curiosity. I don't think I shall be having a double made in 14.5 although if you...
