ZIMBABWE: Hunting The BVC In Zimbabwe For Buffalo, John Sharp Safaris Exceeding Expectations

You know, reading these reports saddens me no end. I hunted the BVC in 2013 and am reliving the experience reading these reports. I can’t manage the walking now or I’d be booking my trip in the morning. There is a style to the writing here that generates excitement, anxiety, joy, and envy...

    Bird hunting day

Rock pigeons in South Africa, absolutely the hardest wing shooting I’ve had. Had two days of goose hunting, also in South Africa, birds had never been hunted and we used the ugliest excuses for decoys imaginable, great fun. And there was one evening shooting sand grouse in Zimbabwe. Oh, and...

    HUNTING Whitetail Deer

The “elbow” is a good reference point for the location of the heart, I’ve used it to kill a lot of deer and also in taking direct cardiac puncture blood samples.

Recent U.S. Customs Experiences - Particularly at Dulles

I took shotguns to SA in 2012, coming back through Dulles was a little bit of a challenge. Having retired from federal service and not giving a crap about the inefficient process of government, on orders by the man, I followed a Customs agent into a very secured area of the airport terminal...

Hunting Whitetails with dogs in the South?

Ruark’s “The Old Man and the Boy” has a chapter on hound hunting white tails and the boy making his first deer kill. It’s an old southern tradition that is still in practice in coastal Georgia. Down this way there is very limited public hunting and private lands are leased to hunting clubs...

    Shooting accuracy

First, well done on preparing for your shooting, your efforts will pay off. Suggestion, get some Africa game photographic targets and start picturing the animals as your targets. It really makes a difference since I never did see any plains game with black bullseyes on their sides or chests...

    Bushpig hunting tips and tricks

We found this one one a live-catch trap set for other animals. “Shot” it with my camera and then it was otta there! Saw one other bushpig, that one was in Zimbabwe. We jumped him from behind a downed tree where he was probably sleeping. He departed much too quickly for a rifle shot...

Wondering if anyone else visited Rhodes tomb

The deterioration of the country and countryside was clearly evident. Tragic and, I fear, permanent. Rhodes’ tomb and it’s history were both amazing and sad. Very sorry for the loss of your farm. I know another whose family had theirs taken, too. So stupid, nearsighted, and self defeating.

    Thinking About Africa? READ THIS!

Hunting in Africa is life changing and I mean not just the hunt and the animals. The people, the cultures, the history all made my three trips so much more than I ever imagined. And to think that my plan was a one time trip to just hunt birds and maybe take a zeba or impala...hahahahahaha!

PLEASE, PLEASE, PAHLEEEEESE GET FIT FOR YOUR HUNT IN AFRICA..!

Walking to prep for the hunt is essential but I found that carrying a 5 lb weight in my hand the first two weeks of walking and then a ten pound weight for the next few months prepped me for carrying my rifle. I also had a small back pack on my back with ten pounds in it to get accustomed to my...

    Snakes

Before my first trip, I told my PH and the outfitter that I would love to see a cobra in the wild. Didn’t see any cobras but did see two puff adders, big brutes, and heard that HHSSsssss of another. It’s part of the whole experience. Hunt from June to early September and I doubt you’ll see any.

Surprise at the water hole for this gemsbok

I got a kick out of that. The day before yesterday I did a presentation on snakes for 52 kids ages 8 to 10 and this video would have generated some great discussion. Questions like “Why did the non-venomous snake strike the gemsbok?” And “Did it just want to enjoy its bath without...

What are best colors to paint walls in a trophy room?

What I wanted was someone to reproduce this cave painting but couldn’t find anyone locally. I think this would hav set the feeling of “bush” Africa. I settled for I think many trophy rooms are too dark and the light too low to really catch the power of the trophies. I also prefer placing...

Trophy the film - let your voice be heard

Another point for me, the poster advertising for “Trophy” depicts a white rhino in the crosshairs of a rifle scope. It was clear from the content of the production that sport hunting has nothing to do with the decline of rhinos. Seems either to be “baiting” to attract more viewers, what I call...

Trophy the film - let your voice be heard

I just finished watching the film and I believe, in very subtle ways, it presented a stronger "anti-hunting" versus "middle ground" message. I have a B.S. in zoology and an M.S. in fisheries. I also have an M.S.W. in clinical social work (therapist). I am also a hunter starting at age 7...

    What makes hunting Eland special?

The are a massive animal, the largest spiral horn antelope. The eland I hunted always had either zebra or impala in close attendance. Made stalking them a real challenge. Their stride when walking is huge which makes it a real challenge to catch up with them. Once spooked and they bolt, good...

    Encounter with an Anti Hunter

    Hello Form Louisiana, United States

Welcome! I lived in Baton Rouge for three years while attending LSU. It was great fun hunting ducks and catching a mess of fish a lot of times. There are a lot of options for a combination hunting and photo safaris in Africa, just be aware that the trip might ruin you for future hunts in the...

    22-250 for Whitetail Deer

A 22-250 is a nice caliber for kids, it reduces the likelihood of developing a flinch. As has been said, the high velocity and light bullet weight don’t allow for much error in POI. It is clear that you researched the round and probably had your youngster fire it enough to be comfortable and...

    WANTED: Looking For Africa Birds
