Win Free Air Passes to Africa for 2011

Sometimes an airline will overbook the economy section of a flight and then bump some lucky passenger up to business class. I have been bumped to First class a couple of times. When the airlines bump someone a major factor in who gets offered the bump is appearance. The airline would rather...

Your opinion on Best Caliber for plainsgame in Africa?

Twigs and sticks in the way deflect bullets, period. THey do not care about the caliber of the bullet. How far away the twig or stick is will determine wether the bullet wounds, kills or misses the animal. I have hunted with a .308 Win, 30-06, .300 win mag and a .338 win mag. I was...

Retired man buys a new sports car.

A man who had recently retired bought a new Sprts car with the some of his savings. On the way home from the lot he decided to try it out and see what it would do. What it did was go past a speed trap at 95 Miles per hour in a 70 MPH zone. WHen he saw the flashing lights he made a quick...

    Bear Safety

A client on a river raft trip on the Gulkana River asked me about bear safety, and how to tell the different species of Bears that might be in the area. It's simple I told him, for safety stay in the boat. If you need to get out and go on land carry pepper spray and make lots of noise, even...

    A little laugh

LOL Before we got married my wife shot a moose in a walk-in only, no motorized vehicles hunting area. They packed it out on bicycles after the hunt.

    Shot To The Heart

I have heart shot several different animals and seen a variety of reactions. One wyoming pronghorn dropped in it's tracks years ago while another in the same herd ran in a big circle before succumbing. An 8 Ft Alaskan Brown bear shot through the heart became quite perturbed at the notion and...

Mubarak, Karibu, Habari ya safari? Good to meet you. I will be hunting on a resident permit. I am here on a resident visa. I am not sure which area we will hunt as I am going as a guest of a friend here in Dar. There are church members at my church who are chagga from Moshi. I just...

Most Dangerous part of HUnting in Africa

Code4, Thanks for the input. I drink about 3 liters of filtered water a day just to stay hydrated over here and take a regular prophylactic anti malarial daily as well. Meds in TZ are different than in the USA. I can buy the equivalent of Tylenol with Codeine over the counter. Thanks for the...

Most Dangerous part of HUnting in Africa

RickP, We were in Joburg in July right at the end of FIFA World Cup. I think the Barbed Wire and Compund walls are ubiquitous around most of Africa. At least in Dar they are everywhere. I know our short camp will include a guard to protect our belongins while we are away from the camp. Red...

Most Dangerous part of HUnting in Africa

Classicsafari thanks for the reminder about driving. You are right, driving in Dar es Salaam is quite possibly the most dangerous part of my life. THere was absolutely nothing in my Oklahoma High School drivers ed class that could prepare me for driving over here. Red Leg, I will be hunting...

Most Dangerous part of HUnting in Africa

I am preparing for my first trip in Africa. No fancy safari type just a weekend trip with a friend from here in Dar es Salaam. My question is which hazard is the one I most need to be aware of. In Alaska it was always hypothermia even on Summer time fishing trips. I assume that is not a...

    Best Tasting African Animal

Keep the reports coming. I appreciate all the input. I don't think I will be trying Hyena. A friend shot a spring Grizzly that was eitehr pretty good or absolutely awful depending on how it was cooked. I think Carnivores and Omnivores are like that. I do like Alligator and think I will have...

    Best Tasting African Animal

I haven't read any posts on this topic but excuse the redneck in me. I am moving to Dar next week and am curious about what everyones favorite animal is not just to hunt, but also to eat? I have friends in Dar who vote Zebra as their favorite and talked with another person who really loved...

    6.5mm for plains game hunting?

WMD "Karamojo" Bell, Saying that he knew where to place a shot is an understatement. I know people who have shot Alska-Yukon Moose with a 6.5X55 Swede. They are quite large and take a lot of killing. .264 caliber is above the minimum required for Tanzania Plains game.
