I have shot several elephant with .458Win., Federal factory 500 grain Woodleigh and handloads with 480 grain DGS.. It sure works..but I prefer to use a double rifle while hunting them..

Back to the OP´s question....advice on .375H&H ammunition for PG.. There are a lot of premium bullets for this round...but what do you really need..? I think it is far too much emphasis on bullets for PG...I have shot lots of PG with .375H&H, most with conventional bullets like Remington 270...

I bought some RWS kegelspitz 300 grainers around 1990...worst overloaded cartridges...the bolt on my ZKK 602 had to be forced up..did not dare to use them.. Since we are at it.. the current .500 Jeffery ammo from Kynoch is as bad in my rifle..useless..Norma is good..

I did shoot some prewar Eley ammo with solids..had to stop that due to duds and afterburners.. I will load it with Woodleigh softs only I think..

There is some truth in that modern handloaders take it too far to gain velocity.. All the Nitro Express ammunition velocities produced by Kynoch were shot with 28" barrels so most gave barely 2000fps..in production rifles.. Carl Labuschagne, an SA PH, cronoed his old Kynoch ammo in .577NE to...

Basically you are right regarding barrel lenghts for the period being 26 - 28".. But there are exeptions..my WW1 era double have 23" barrels...no sleeving/reproof so original..it regulates perfectly with modern Kynoch at average 2158fps, this being a .475 3 1/4NE.. A very handy rifle in dense...

I have 4 vintage british rifles, 1906 - 1920ish..3 are double rifles.. I have ca. the story of one of them but not the others.. I wish they could talk and tell me their stories..

This story, wich I read years ago and own experience with big male leopard prowling outside a similar hut has made my rule of always having a loaded rifle (preferebly a double rifle with softs) within arms reech at night..

My only experience with TSX was using 235 grainers in .375H&H on PG in Namibia...worked splendidly..large wound channels and perfect expansion..

I tried these loads...I can say that N-160 produce quite a lot more felt recoil than the RL-15...in my .470 Krieghoff, without any more velocity..
