    Twist rate

I have heard about that and it definitely has some merit. However I’ve not read a full and in-depth article about it so can’t say I am fully convinced yet. What I would love to see is the same solid at the same velocity fired into the same media but from different twists, in .458 1:14-1:20 would...

    Twist rate

That’s my point, 460 Wby uses a faster twist than a 45-70 despite them using bullets of the same or at least very similar length in most cases. Which is counterintuitive because, as you correctly pointed to, increased velocity equals increased stability for a given twist I.e. what stabilises in...

    Twist rate

    I’ve seen the same rule of thumb but do that for .458” and you end up around 20-22”. As an example: Woodleigh 500gr FMJ is 1.388” Woodleigh 550gr FMJ is 1.521” (.458^2 x 150) / 1.388= 22.7” (.458^2 x 150) / 1.521= 20.7”

    Twist rate

Little barrel twist question. 1:14” is standard for a 458 Win and 1:16” for 460 Weatherby. This makes sense as the 460 is faster so can use a slower twist for a given bullet weight. However standard for the much slower 45-70 is 1:20” or even 1:22”. Why is that? Any reason why a 460 couldn’t be...

I have, I’m more concerned about things like recoil lug placement and bottom metal fit. How much would you be thinking? I have a Husqvarna 46 Small Ring, HWL also has a 46 but it looks different to mine. It’s not required but it’s more that it’s a function of their success. Most guys run...

That is the same as mine then, yours just looks different in the shroud/cocking piece. I would be very interested in the stock, I’m just concerned it wouldn’t fit. Definitely seconded!

Good to know, sounds like my shot placement should work well with the Speer. Thanks mate. It's good to hear that you think the same as I do regards toughness. The Speer does seem to to be pretty soft, hopefully it'll perform as expected. I have some copper 220gr to try at some point but...

    9.3x57

Thanks for the reply. I really like it so far, as you say it has mild recoil and mine is more than accurate enough. That's very interesting as I am going after a roe buck at the weekend. Currently running 270gr Speer at about 2200fps. I have some concerns about expansion (although it is a...

    500 Whisper Dangerous Game?

I agree with your pints and the other posters points. They're points I was already aware of, however that doesn't negate their validity. My counter to that is that the chances of a missfeed or a dropped cartridge are just as likely as with a double. You get the rapid second shot with a double...

    500 Whisper Dangerous Game?

Getting the can isn't the hard bit but weight (and cost) certainly is. The Ase-Utra is readily available but is 2.2kg (4.85lbs). Fortunately I know a guy who builds suppressors, since the Whisper doesn't use anywhere near the amount of powder as the bmg (for which the Ase is designed) he can...

    500 Whisper Dangerous Game?

I think a double will likely be faster for 4 as well. Regardless, it would be a single I would build, disadvantages be damned!
  15. Jimbob

    500 Whisper Dangerous Game?

I don't think Matt said that a single shot was as fast as a double, quite the opposite in fact. I think carrying more than one bullet is a given, as is practicing with the rifle but I don't think a single shot is as fast as a bolt action. Close maybe but a well practiced user of both will be...

Or how about a 12.7x99 BPE, that'd be fun.

    500 Whisper Dangerous Game?

Don't get me wrong, if they turn down the 500 Whisper I'll just get a 505 and have at it!
  18. Jimbob

    500 Whisper Dangerous Game?

Neither really. I've designed a few different rifles and the single shot route will be the one I go down. Easiest to make with minimal machinery outlay. Part of me says just build it in 505 Gibbs and be done with it but I'd never get that approved for use in the UK, only abroad. The 500 Whisper...

Yeah they're brilliant. Just as confident off those as I am off a bipod at all normal hunting ranges.

    Shooting Sticks

May I suggest trying quad sticks? Can be used as regular sticks if needs be but are solid as a rock if used as a front a rear rest. Brilliant set up. These aren't mine but same design:

    500 Whisper Dangerous Game?

I completely agree there Matt. It's definitely riskier to use a single shot, same as using a bow or muzzleloader. To an extent, that's the appeal along with the knowledge that one has a single shot to take the animal. I don't mind the PH backing me up if the animal does come so long as he can...

    500 Whisper Dangerous Game?

Not to be confused with the 510 Whisper, the 500 is based on a much shortened 378/416/460 Weatherby case. Appeals to me as I would have a deer legal subsonic rifle which, with a suppressor, would be as quiet as a rifle could be for deer here. What got me really interested is that, according to...

    Open Sighted 45-70 in Africa

I agree Pat, the debate starts when what an individual terms "appropriate speed" is brought up. Some are fine with the prospect of 500gr@1800, others think the 458 Win Mag isn't fast enough, others say to drop weight with a monolithic and get more velocity. Those who disapprove of the 45-70...

    Open Sighted 45-70 in Africa

There is a gent called Bob Mitchell who has a blog and he loves the 45-70. His are Ruger No1's and he loads them to modern rifle pressures. He also long throated one of his, calls it the 45-70 Improved if you fancy a google, and that enables it to basically duplicate a 458 Win Mag. He explains...

Why is the 243 so popular in Europe?

That is much more relaxed than I thought, thanks for the info

Why is the 243 so popular in Europe?

I don't know when you lived there but German laws are very similar to the UK. The only real difference is that they are allowed handguns. They still require a license and must have that license ammended for new rifles. I'm not 100% but I don't think they have to justify each rifle mind.
  29. Jimbob

Why is the 243 so popular in Europe?

It likely doesn't bother you but, as a heads up, the purchase/hold thing got scrapped a while ago. You should just have one number for holding. For example I have 400 on my FAC so I can buy 4 lots of 100 spread out or 400 in one go. It was scrapped to allow people to stock up on bullets they...

Why is the 243 so popular in Europe?

As has been said, it's used a lot in the UK as that's what's easy to get a first rifle. You can usually get any sensible deer round as your first rifle but many people don't want the hassle so just go with what they know will be approved. The reason the shooting show and other British...

Not here they aren't! The Zeiss Terra is down at £3-400 but they aren't anywhere near Conquest levels.

It has been a long hard struggle....

Completely agree, same with the other German brands but unfortunately most of the ones that pop up here are 26mm tubes but I have 1" rings in Weaver bases and they don't do 26mm. If a Swaro/Zeiss/S&B came up with a 1" I'd be all over it.

It has been a long hard struggle....

Yup, massive false economy. I'd rather buy a good scope used than a Chinese one new. Leupold M8 is where it's at for cheap but good, one will grace my 9.3x57 if the (original) Weaver K4 isn't up to scratch.

Cheers for the responses. Got everything squared away now, the rifle is at the gunsmith for threading, the suppressor is nearly ordered, and I have all the gear to load for her. With BLC2 it's looking like a 270gr at 2200fos being relatively conservative. Should do me for 90% of things, there...

    Big case 404's

Well presuming a bullet could hold up to it, i would say it would be just as effective as 416 Rigby.

    Big case 404's

Yeah gotta give your wildcat a cool name, especially if it's proprietary.
  40. Jimbob

    Big case 404's

Nice, so it's a 460 Weatherby with no belt which is a 416 Rigby. Due to the larger bullet diameter, using the Rigby case, it should out perform 416 Rigby when like-for-like pressure. With the 460 Weatherby case (minus the belt) it should out perform the 416 Weatherby for the same reasons...

    Big case 404's

Cheers Gert, I'd be very interested to know what it's based on. I knew there must be one out there, wildcatters can't help it!
  42. Jimbob

    Big case 404's

Oh I agree that the 404 is more than good enough. I was just thinking and realised that every calibre (near as damn it) has the really big cased, tear away of the group along with the golden child but not in .423". For example, we have the 375 h&h and the 375 RUM/378 Weatherby/others. The 458...

    Big case 404's

Has there been any 'magnum' 404 (.423") cartridges? I know the 404 Jeff is loaded hotter nowadays but I mean different parent cases. I imagine they'll be wildcats, I'm only aware of ones based on 300wm/338wm/458wm nothing bigger. There is no real reason for asking, just curious.

    458-338 Lapua

Would be easier since it just takes a CZ550 in 416 Rigby and a new barrel. However, my long term doodling project uses a detachable mag (controversial I know) and 5 shot mags in 338 Lapua are prevalent. That been said, a 450 Rigby would fit in a 338 Lap Mag magazine (mags have 3.77" internal and...

Yeah I thought about the headstamp. One could easily fit a '45' before the .338

    458-338 Lapua

It works out a fraction more than 35 whelen so shouldn't be an issue but it is a minimal shoulder. That been said, it's better than my 9.3x57 :D

    Best .375 moderator

Really it's about time. Politicians are just scared after watching too much James Bond or Jason Bourne. I don't like moderators/suppressors to look at and I don't like what they do to the balance BUT they are very useful for protecting your ears and appeasing neighbouring land owners. Nothing...
